Well, I think this will be my last Outlander book. I started reading them when the first one had just come out and loved it. The next few were also good. Gabaldon is quite a good writer and has a way with words that I really enjoy but this book and the one before it aren't novels, they are a group of vignettes so sewn together with such a thin thread that I don't plan to waste my time on any more of them. I love a good long book that I can really get into but 1500 pages of short stories is not what I had in mind. Plus, its starting to feel like I'm reading the Perils of Pauline, just one trauma after another. The book could easily been cut by more than half and had movement to it, instead, I got so tired of reading it that I began speed reading and skimming the last several hundred pages. This isn't like me at all, I love to read and have loved these books but I've had enough. If I really want to know what happens to the Frasers then I'll watch the TV series but frankly, I don't care anymore. This in itself is a shame because Gabaldon is such a talented writer, she is extremely readable and her attention to detail and historical research is so impressive although she needs to do a little more ornithological research (you don't find mockingbirds and balsam firs at the same altitude). But that is a minor complaint. I have read other reviews and have seen that other people have the same problems I have with these last books. Take note, Diana!!!

Why is the audible version of this book not available on Kindle? It is THE ONLY book in the series that doesn't have the option to purchase it audibly as well.(Of course, I will change the rating to 5-Stars once this is corrected and audible is available for it.)

Oh, what a delicious delight! This is the sixth book in the "Outlander" series by Diana Gabaldon and we find our favorite time traveler, Claire Fraser, living with Jamie on Fraser Ridge in North Carolina in 1772 through 1776 with the American Revolution hovering in the background--and sometimes the foreground. I think this is the best of the bunch since "Outlander," the first and by far the best in the series. And while you will learn a bit of American history, the book is primarily an 18th century soap opera. And what fun it is! We have kidnappings, murder, revenge, the scandal of unwed pregnancies, wayward young men, fires, hangings, more kidnappings, more fires...you name it.The incredibly addictive soap opera plot aside, this book--as are the others in the series--is really about love, honor and duty. Love for family, love for country, the honor of the clan, the duty to serve others. Reading between the lines, it's advice on how we should live.A word of warning: You must begin with "Outlander" and work your way through the series in the proper order. Taking this on is quite a reading and time commitment. The books are all long. Very long. "A Breath of Snow and Ashes" checks in at more than 1,400 pages. But they are SO GOOD! This is the ultimate in escapist reading. And when you realize how good it is and wish it would never end...well, it's so long it almost doesn't.

The Outlander series is a commitment and a journey into history with some fantasy and detailed living in very hard times. Book #6 of 8 was a long book (approx 1400 pages). I read on my Kindle and have the mobile app so I can read wherever I am. Book 6 is set in the beginning forming of America. While very exciting read there are some not so exciting parts about how people settled from other countries and the blending of religions and beliefs. Food, medical attention, and shelter and also in discussed in detail which may be boring to some readers, but I find it very helpful in understanding why history evolved as it did back in the 1700's. I loved this book and have started book #7. The author and her team have done extensive research to keep this fictional story on track with the documented history events as they happened. A lot of respect to Diana Gabaldon and her team for writing these wonderful books. Enjoy!! PEACE

I have read all of the previous books in this series and loved them, but had to put this one down for good. To be quite frank, there's a lot of really explicit rape in this book, and it's unnecessary and uncomfortable. The plot is not advanced at all. As always, Gabaldon's writing is pleasant to read, but the content is what was lacking for me. I'm about halfway through and have stuck it on my bookshelf. Part of me wants to know what happens to Claire and Jamie, Bri and Roger, but if I had to read about one more character getting sexually assaulted I was going to be physically ill. Gabaldon should also realize that, with the astronomically high rates of sexual assault, a book including rape scene after rape scene wouldn't go over well.

Disjointed read and way to descriptive of things that are so repetitive it makes it ridiculous reading. I love , Dickens, Irving- kings of going overboard with descriptions but this was just an atrocity. I wish she'd use and editor for at least these kinds of things.While I love the characters and have grown attached and the historical accuracy and admire the research therein- the only great novels of the series were Outlander and The Drums of Autumn.Too bad. I was so hoping this to be a better read.E

I read the negative reviews and laughed at their ignorance. Years ago I had the original.....it was 4 times as big with many more pictures. I was disappointed, but should have noticed the page count. The pictures removed were the best ones.

it seems awareness has come full circle. we once had only only the mystics to teach us the great mysteries. then we learned science. now science leads us back to the place of the mystics. i am grateful for this book. it appeared in my life when I really needed the reminder of what is truly real. love and gratitude.

Tucson has a lot of great day hikes and enough easy ones to fill this book. However, the author is very inconsistent when it comes to what he labels "easy," and includes trails that are actually pretty challenging. The basically level and short "Garwood Trail" hike in Saguaro National Park is "easy" in this book but so is the rugged nearly 4 mile "Aspen Trail", with at least 600 feet in elevation gain at high altitude. Sorry, they can't both be "easy." I agree with the reviewer who pointed out the need for more elevation information, since it's essential for planning. I also find the maps nearly impossible to read. The dotted lines of the trail itself is lost in the maze topo lines and bold highway lines. Earlier Falcon "Best Easy" guides did a far better job with maps, with white backgrounds and simple trail lines.

Great resource for hikes. wish there were better maps and better information on topography/elevation changes.

This book is very helpful to someone new to the area.. Concise directions & descriptions.

First of all, the pictures in this cookbook are gorgeous and inspiring. I find that many cookbooks do not have enough pictures, leaving me to guess the outcome of the final product. Not this book! There are many, many pictures of beautiful vegan food!Second, I plan on bringing THE star dish to holiday gatherings this year. As a vegan, I am tired of being relegated to eating a green salad and cranberry sauce during Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. Therefore, I decided that this year I am going to bring several of my own dishes, no matter what the host says. That way, family and friends will realize that vegan cooking can be beautiful and delicious. My goal is for them to come back for seconds!

This cookbook is knocking my socks off! I've already made a few of the recipes in advance for ease and extra hiking time on Thanksgiving day, and I think this will be the best Thanksgiving ever, vegan or not!First off, I made the parsnip vanilla soup. Delicately flavored and, hands down, my new favorite way to enjoy parsnips (a food that I would never have gone out of my way to eat, previously). This soup is so good, that I'm thinking of making ahead and freezing for guests at Christmas-time. They are staunchly not vegan, but it's that good, that I think, even they will enjoy it.Next I made the cranberry sauce and nut roast filling. I love it even more than the soup. It's simply amazing. The flavors both meld beautifully together AND stand out. It's really remarkable. I've never liked homemade cranberry sauce, until now. (I was canned, cranberry jelly girl, before this recipe!) my roommate, who up until now hated cranberry sauce, was begging me for more. And he's very picky!I have my nut roast tightly wrapped in the fridge and I am really looking forward to cooking it day of.I'm also planning on making Welsh rarebit, to serve alongside the soup after a nice hike, and I'm making the stuffing and orange glazed carrots, to accompany the main event. Oh, and I'm making gravy day of, as well. I'm REALLY looking forward to trying these recipes.This book surpasses my expectations. The recipes are next level. Some may take a little time and care but the results are well worth it. None have been difficult, just time consuming to chop ingredients. I could probably use better knives, so they may go faster once I upgrade.

I am SO glad I only spent $8 for the Kindle version. The majority of the recipes require wheat gluten and mushrooms. I'm not gluten sensitive, but I think wheat gluten is just nasty. Plus I hate mushrooms. There are only a couple of recipes I'll probably prepare.

This book is amazing! This cookbook has a comprehensive collection of all your favorite childhood holiday foods (but vegan)! There are beautiful photos of every dish, and Gaz thought of everything down to the day-after pick me up juice! It's all you need to plan the perfect holiday spread (Thanksgiving appropriate as well). Cheers to a great second release, Gaz!

I bought this after borrowing it from the library. I like it because there are showpiece recipies. My guy, who mostly just reheats things, liked it because the author rates each recipe for difficulty. He successfully made the orange glazed carrots (rated as a 2) mostly on his own twice now. He is gearing up for the cauliflower next. There are some ingredients that I can't get in the US but I've managed to make substitutions that tasted great.True, this cookbook is not for the gluten free but if you can eat gluten the "meat" recipies are yummy. About 4 years ago I discovered that I could no longer buy the dry mixes to make seasoned seitan. After trying other recipes that didn't work well, I gave up. Now I'm back to success.

This cookbook is packed with goodness. . Everything looks delicious and not too complicated. . Some ingredients I have not heard of but will find. I cannot eat gluten so a few recipes I need to find substitutions but there is enough in the book to be thrilled I purchased.

Excellent cookbook for entertaining as a vegan. I made two of the Christmas Wellington roasts for a large crowd and a double batch of his cranberry orange sauce. Both were abosoljtely delicious!!!

Gaz nails it again with his holiday vegan recipes, hosting dinner will be easy even for new vegan chefs!

I eagerly anticipated this book before I went on vacation and it did not disappoint. The perfect follow up to Richard Ben Cramer's 2000 bio on Joe DiMaggio. That painted a harsh portrait of Joe. Dr. Positano's narrative serves up Joe's finer points of devotion to family, religion, doing many kindnesses for friends, being a stand up guy, and patience with coping with his enormous fame. Everyone loved him. Yes, he had some eccentricities and could challenge Dr. Positano's patience--but don't we all have quirks too? I particularly liked going down memory lane with the list of Mr. DiMaggio's restaurants in the 1990's many of whom I frequented as a media salesman. I did disagree with Mr. DiMaggio's favorite--Bravo Gianni. Dr. Positano and Mr. DiMaggio were treated well by Mr. Garavelli because of their celebrity. Regular folks were not treated well by him. Unfortunately I had to endure many visits due to a friend who was star struck. It did have great pasta however, and his patented "silk handkerchief". This book deserved 5 stars because it is so well written and engrossing. I couldn't put it down and neither will you!

Richard Ben Cramer wrote an unauthorized biography on Joe DiMaggio but this latest effort by Joe's friend Dr. Rock Positano and John Positano dwarfs anything previously written about the Yankee Clipper. DiMaggio first met the doctor and author when he had problems with his heel on his foot when Joe was still playing for the Yankees. They have been close friends since and Dr. Positano shares his many experiences the two of them shared over the next several decades. DiMaggio was a very private individual and his fastidious nature regarding protecting his image could prove to be a very trying experience for even the most patient individual.Joe DiMaggio's life and his experiences with fellow Yankee' teammates, Frank Sinatra, Ted Williams, wives Dorothy Arnold and Marilyn Monroe, his son Joe Jr. and many others are all revealed here. Joe was a man of many facets "all turned on." He could be kind to kids, abrupt to those he considered interlopers, and send those he felt had wronged him to the "cold Siberian tundra." The author was always accommodating and took Joe wherever he wanted to go. When going out to dinner you'd better have a suit and tie with the knot tied just right. To do otherwise would be a sign of disrespect to those accompanying him.It had to be very difficult to be someone who was recognizable to everyone wherever he went with privacy being at a premium and the author, Dr. Positano, did his best to accommodate Joe's wishes. Joe became reflective and nostalgic as the two of them rode around New York City for the final time as Joe felt perhaps he had a greater effect on strangers than his own family members.I feel Dr. Positano provided the reader with a fair portrait on the image of Joe DiMaggio. I don't believe Joe would consign his friend to the "cold Siberian tundra" for writing this book. The book contains eight pages of photos and is one of the best baseball books I have read in some time.

I grew up in the same neighborhood as the author and played Little League at the same church, St. Athanasius on Bay Parkway, where I also attended Sunday school, Wednesday school and did my first communion and confirmation. He captured the neighborhood beautifully and rose to be a New York City doctor and hang out with DiMaggio. He would be the envy of all my friends growing up.I enjoyed the book and the insights. However, I could not help but feel it betrayed the memory of DiMaggio. These were things he shared with a friend and confidant. Someone who he trusted and looked after him. Why share them? I do not understand the true motivation behind the book. It did not always paint a flattering picture of DiMaggio or the author. Who knows.

While many know of Joe DiMaggio's record in baseball, this book by Rock Positano, reveals another side of this baseball icon. Rock fully captures what it was like to be accepted as Joe's friend after he successfully treated Joe.Living in New York, I am familiar with many of the restaurants referred to in this book, and I fully understand and appreciate the centrality of the dinner table as a place where friends gather to discuss important issues of the day. A most appropriate title for this riveting book. The book is filled with nuggets that remind those of us, who are of this era, what is really important in life.Congratulations to Dr. Positano for providing insight into this American Icon. The book is a very quick read due to Rock's amazing ability to transport the reader into his story. I highly recommend this book without reservation!

Good read for an.... Teen, read with 12 yr old. Talks alot about self confidence and being ok with being you!

The day this book arrived I read it cover to cover in one night! Initially, I thought I would skim through a couple chapters that interested me most, rather than start at the beginning, but I found myself compelled to read the chapters I had originally glossed over. It took me a few hours, but I could not put it down.I love this book! It has solid advice for teens in a modern world, where so many unhealthy and confusing messages are bombarding our youth. It addresses a gamut of subjects, such as learning to take personal responsibility, dealing with challenges and failure, developing healthy friendships, and even identifying and avoiding sexual abuse, to name just a few topics. The book really shines in the way it presents the ideas. All chapters are short and readable; no long, wordy sections that strain ones attention. The warm tone which reads like an intimate conversation - this book does not lecture or instruct - is very appealing. I think it is a valuable guide not only for teens, but also for parents or mentors who are looking for a more effective way to communicate these messages to any young adult.

I am very grateful to Aunt Laya for writing this much needed book. It is practical, effective, sweet, and very readable. Do you have a teenager in the house? Know one? Ever met one? This is a must read for you and then I'm sure you will agree with me that you need to get it in every teenager's hand.I happen to have my Master's in Psychology and have read a lot of ineffective books in my life. Really good book my boy loved it

I love everything about this book--from the quotations sprinkled through each chapter to the upbeat message delivered by each chapter! Aunt Laya covers every possible issue and doesn't avoid the tough ones. This is a "Book of Wisdom" packed full of common sense and delivered with love. If I could give my tween and teen grandkids only one book, this would be the one! Highly Recommended!

This is a great book for teens I wish that there was something like this for me as a young girl,

I purchased this book for my teenage daughter, who like most teens don't want to listen to their parents as they think everyone else is so much cooler- she would say. Lovely. Anyway, this was a good solid insightful way for her to see, albeit from someone else, what I've been telling/advising her about and thus gives me some "cred". Amen!

Best read on advice for girls growing up in a complex and difficulty world. Life lessons to be read, reread and shared with all ages of women. GREAT BOOK!
