Hi, would be great to read this Kindle book, but you cannot. The ebook uses a symbol for the chess piece when describing a move. So Bxh3 becomes .xh3 because the symbol is the size of a pinhead. Changing the font size doesn't change the size of the symbols.

A great look at how Fischer moved and thought during his games. I picked up some valuable pointers just within the first ten pages. A worthwhile read for chess players at any level. I've been playing for 55 years. I highly recommend this book.

Love this book! A must have for any chess aficionado. I went through every game on my chess board from start to finish while relishing Fischer’s incisive, often pithy, commentaries. Wonderful to witness on your favorite board the beauty of chess piece arrangements as they dance to the final death of the king.

This is very cool book that lets you read exactly what a chess expert was thinking whilst playing. Even though the material is a bit above my head at times, it's very fun to use a board & follow along.

I gave my old copy from 1972 to a young person who was just starting out. I really missed it over the years so I bought the new one with algebriacnotations. It's like meeting an old friend again after a long passage of time.

Just the right book for a beginner. Looking at the thought processes is a bit difficult; however, in the long run it is an excellent book.

The sacred canopy is the universal world view that any religion proposes, thanks to human consciousness. This interpretation is mostly of the historic religions of the West and the secularization of these since the Enlightenment. All canopies alienate people from others, so all religions embark on separate marketing campaigns, like New Orthodoxy or Liberal Catholicism. The 'sociological theory of religion' is as follows.Consciousness externalizes or seeks to make inner experiences concrete in the outer experiences of the surrounding world. Religion constructs a sacred canopy, or all-embracing world order (Chapter 1).Producing sacred order is 'part of the same activity that produces society,' a result of consciousness that externalizes ideas (Chapter 2).The 'sacred canopy' is an all-embracing order that maintains society against chaos (Chapter 3).But there is chaos; and the suffering of the innocent, threatens the maintenance of institutional order, and poses the 'problem of theodicy.' People must accept or reject one or more aspects of social order. Religious experience is fundamentally alienating because it 'projects human meanings into the empty vastness of the universe '– a projection...which comes back as an alien reality to haunt its producers' (100). This is 'religion and alienation' (Chapter 4).Experiences remove sectors of society from the domination of religious definitions and symbols. This is the 'process of secularization' (Chapter 5).No competent authority imposes religious traditions any longer, so religions have to market their traditions. This poses them the 'problem of plausibility' (Chapter 6: 138).Since the surrounding social milieu no longer takes any orthodoxy's definitions of reality for granted, each religion organizes as a minority against a hostile, at least non-believing, milieu The poses the 'problem of legitimation' (Chapter 7).Alienation, or commitment to one view devalues other views, is endemic to religion. Any experience that casts doubt on the alienating view, however, threatens anomy, or 'bad faith' in the rightness of the particular view. For instance, the Jewish Covenant chose a minority and so alienated the 'Chosen People' from humanity in general. And Christian 'other-worldliness' completely disenfranchised the world, alienating people from this world. Again, the classic Moslem view alienates Islam from both, Judaism and Christianity, because they fell from true monotheism by adopting hullul, the doctrine of incarnation, as if anyone or anything could stand beside God or act as the mediator between God and humanity (121).Superb scholarship, complete indexing, readable academic prose, if somewhat dense in page-long paragraphs.

If professor Berger was trying to impress me with his vocabulary he certainly succeeded. Unfortunately my need to look up the meaning of so many words and untranslated Latin phrases made it difficult to concentrate on the content of his sentences, some of which I had to read 3 times to comprehend.However, once comprehended, the book is brilliant and I will certainly reread it frequently.

I bought this book for a graduate seminar on the sociology of religion, and it's an excellent jumping off point. Berger does an excellent job of taking you from the very beginning (his epistemology) to "empirical" evidence supporting his theory. I use quotation marks because it's a topic for debate (whether or not the argument is truly empirical let alone a solid support system for his claims).Berger writes in a much more approachable way than, let's say, Max Weber but isn't as abrasive as Karl Marx. But, his writing is provocative. I'm unsure how a religiously devout person would swallow some of his imagery, but it makes for a good read.

Essential Reading for understanding the "Sociology of Knowledge" as it applies to religious experience. Yes, it is a bit "dated" as any 50 year old book would be; however, his analysis and theory is spot-on-correct. I am indebted to Peter Berger for his clear, insightful perspective.

This book is essential to any student of religion or theology. Berger explores the complex relationship of internalization of beliefs and how these are externalized into our daily lives. This is an absolute necessity, even if you happen to disagree with Berger. This is one of the top sociological works of the 20th century.

This book is a must for anyone interested in the study or experience of religion in the modern world. Part one highlights the human need for meaning and order that is rooted in something less transient than human existence, and the way religion functions as a "shield" against various existential terrors. Although somewhat dated, the analysis of modern religion presented in part two is valuable for its discussions of how secularization has roots within religion itself, and how the relationships between religious denominations and the rest of society can be profitably described in terms borrowed from market economics. The book is highly readable, frequently funny, and provides a lucid introduction to a particular sociology of knowledge as well as a useful perspective on religion.

Very dry and academic. Used for sociology class but continue to use it for other classes.

Berger's book, whether you agree with his likely personal beliefs or not, takes a person through religion and how religion functions within society to the secularization and pluralism of America. Well-written and a must-read to understand culture and religion.

He is unsparing in his criticism of President Trump and the Trump Administration. Hayden has concluded that the President and his team have no concept of evidence based decision making or the difference between truth and falsehood. Hayden of course marshals a good deal of facts to support these conclusions. He was particularly incensed when the President on several occasions referred to the members of the Intelligence Community (IC) as "Nazis" without even thinking about the term. Hayden also is angry at the President's obvious distrust and disinterest in national intelligence reports and findings. Well the supporters of President Trump will undoubtedly ignore this book as an pathetic attempt by the "Deep State" to undermine his presidency while his detractors will consider the book as additional evidence of the President's unfitness for the job.

About the Author

ROBERT F. BRUNER is the Distinguished Professor of Business Administration at the Darden School of the University of Virginia and Executive Director of the Batten Institute. He directs the Darden School’s executive education course on mergers and acquisitions, and teaches the popular MBA elective on that topic. He is the author of over 250 case studies and a casebook, Case Studies in Finance: Managing for Corporate Value Creation, which has been adopted for use at over 200 schools. Bruner’s articles have been published in the Journal of Financial Economics, the Journal of Accounting and Economics, the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, the Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking, and Financial Management. He has served as a consultant to over twenty corporations as well as to the U.S. Government, and prior to his academic career, worked as a commercial banker and venture capitalist. Finally! This is a book that is alphabetized so that I can find my passwords quickly instead of scrolling through pages and pages of notes. Also purchased one for ladies in my office and they love it. Yay great find!

Works for me. Would prefer one that stayed open though. It's a nice size.

In this world of password-protected everything, these have helped me tremendously. I keep one at work and one at home. I am still cautious about writing down every letter or digit, but give myself enough clues to prompt my memory. At home, I also include serial numbers, account numbers, and phone numbers as appropriate. It's helpful when I need repairs.

Genius!!! Passwords are just out of control. You need a password for everything. And they have to be changed often and some have specific requirements, specific lengths, can't spell actual words, can't reuse them. It's just become overwhelming. This book has been a great organizing tool for me. My memory isn't as good as it used to be and now it's all in one quick space. Plus if anything happens to you your family can access accounts.

Love that it’s alphabetized and has a space for notes below the login information. ONLY thing I wish it did have, was a spiral ring. This is the exact layout I was wanting, so I went ahead and purchased it. But it does make it harder to write when close to the inside of the pages. It’s so cute, and the cover has a nice feel.

My fionce and I were lended this book from a confidant in anticipation of our wedding. We liked it so much and felt it was so concise, to the point, and powerful enough that we decided to buy our own copy and give the borrowed copy back. We often read it before bed each night and have learned a great deal even though we both have varying levels of understanding of Judaism at varied education levels. I would highly recommend this to everyone who feels like they want to get back to the foundations of Jewish tradition and "what its all about" or someone who never learned before. Its not a how-to but it does cover everything and explains it. I never knew the traditions and explanations about the Hebrew calendar as one example. I highly recommend this book.

As somebody who grew up completely secular, I can honestly say that, out of all the books that I'd read about Judaism (and there's many), this is by far the best one. More importantly, it's written in a style that is sure to keep the reader entertained, as well as clear and easy enough for anybody, regardless of background, to understand -from those of us who want to reconnect with our roots, to the curious-minded who are simply looking for a good introduction to Judaism. A definite must-read.

This is a must have for those looking to convert, but also great for anyone raised with the traditions but not necessarily the understanding of the why's behind them.

I loved reading this book ... it tugged at my emotions and gave me new perspectives on God, life, and everything in between. Judaism is so beautiful, but books rendering it are often tedious; not this one. Of all the books I've read on Judaism (I've started 6, but finished only 4), this is by far my favorite. Every time I re-read a section, I learn something new. The explanations are often brief, precise, but well-stated and thorough.The beginning starts differently than any other book on Judaism - with marriage TWO BECOME ONE - just like in the beginning there was Adam and Eve. He explains how we are incomplete until we find our other half.The first section of the book renders the "cycle of life" and the holidays (the yearly cycle). The next section is about the Torah and the Land. The third section is about the Jewish persona (modesty in dress and material things), eating for health, physically and spiritually, and character (behavior). The next section is on Thought, the next Speech, and recommended further reading.So he makes the book about you, not about Judaism as a learning subject ... his rendition really enabled me as a reader to feel Jewish.

This book is an excellent introduction to Judaism. Excellent detail without too much on any one topic. There's a little bit on Jewish philosophy, Jewish law, life cycle events, and how Jews think of G-d. Highly recommended if you are just starting to learn about Judaism. This book explains the meaning behind Jewish rituals and fills in the numerous gaps in belief/observance that are left by afternoon Hebrew School.Also, it sure beats a Kitzur Shulchan Orech as a Bar/Bas Mitzvah present for a non-religious cousin. As Rabbi Becher observes, it makes little sense to tell a kid what order to tie their shoes in before you tell them what it is to keep Shabbos. Many have traditionally given "To Be a Jew" by Rabbi Donin or "Jewish Literacy" by Rabbi Telushkin as the more modern equivalent of the Kitzur Shulchan Orech, but it seems this book is a better choice.I had the privilege of hearing Rabbi Becher lecture at Ohr Somayach. He is funny, approachable, and a great teacher-three things that oftentimes do not go hand-in-hand. I've known too many Rabbis considered great speakers due to being funny, but found them lacking in their ability to truly teach and/or too aloof when you approach them to speak one-on-one. Rabbi Becher's voice comes through perfectly in this book, and having spoken to him one-on-one at Yeshiva, heard him speak, and listened to his tapes, I can say he is a great teacher. If you are just starting out to learn about Judaism, buy this book. It will be the best investment of your life (before you plunk down $1800 for an Artscroll Shas). And if you are already frum, this book is a great refresher and you will either (A) pick up pieces of knowledge you didn't already know or (B) learn better ways to explain things you've known since birth if you're FFB.I also recommend, "After the Return" by Rabbi Becher. It's a great guide to those halachic issues that you won't find in many seforim involving integration of a BT into society.

I started to strive for daily meditation about a year ago and it changed my life. Now I am interested in reading more about the subject but find that some of the books can be a little bit... how do I put it... boring. I mean it is hard to write about sitting still!I read about "Loving kindness" on a blog post on the University of California' greater good in action website. The blog post was about how research showed that practicing loving-kindness meditation for seven consecutive days can increase positive feelings such as joy and referred this book.It didnt disappoint. It is well-written, easy to follow and yet, I found that the author can also be poetic at times, and is even entertaining.Each chapter includes a general explanation and at least a couple of practical exercises. For me, it was the perfect introduction to the practice.The author also introduces the reader to various practicioners (masters etc) often by quoting them. After a terrible freak accident that left me with a near-death experience, four days in a coma, a week in intensive care, a month in a rehab hospital after that, and then five months' bed rest at home, punctuated only by five painful and grueling hours of physical therapy per day and two supervised walks, I was in a nasty state spiritually and psychologically. Some abusive treatment and also medical errors at the various hospitals where I was treated left me blasted, detached, tentative, nervous, and with the feeling that I no longer understood the world or what my place in it might be. Various helpful trauma therapies and psychological assistance left me feeling better, but still very unattached, confused, bamboozled, and out of sorts. What was this world I was living in? How would I understand myself as a permanently disabled person? Why was I so numb and baffled all the time?After several months of advice and searching, someone suggested Metta meditation to help me reconnect to myself and the world, and to help me feel safer. They suggested I buy this book, because Metta classes are hard to find. Long story short, it worked. Even just using the instruction in this book, and even without an actual teacher to guide me, I was able to get a practice going that made me feel better almost immediately. Just two short Metta sessions per day based on Ms.Salzberg's instructions (which was all the time I could physically spend sitting), was enough to restore my sense of myself, make me feel much more attached to the world, and to feel powerful despite my disabilities. Once this practice let me reconnect with my naturally loving and optimistic spirit, it unfolded fairly quickly that I felt deeply soothed and more secure every minute of every day.I cannot recommend this practice more highly, and if you don't have a Metta teacher available to you, this book is the best place to get started. If you suffer from some kind of trauma, sense of unreality or inability to connect with others and the world around you, or some kind of severe emotional pain, this is the way to go. I think that for ordinary life stresses or spiritual development, insight meditation or Zen or some other kind like that might be fine, but if something really nasty has happened to you, or if something really unpleasing happened to you in the past that's eroding your ability to live a normal, happy life, Metta meditation is the way to go. Thanks to its clear, simple explanations and easy-to-remember mantra, this book is the place to go when you need to be healed.May you be happyMay you be peacefulMay you be free from fear and painMay you live life with ease.....May all beings be happy....

I first experienced the practice of Loving-Kindness at a retreat at Insight Meditation Society, the meditation/teaching center in Barre, MA that Sharon Salzberg, Joseph Goldstein and Jack Kornfield co-founded many years ago. After the retreat and the experience of this practice, I bought this book and have shared it with many friends over the years. Learning to love ourselves first, before we can love another flies in the face of what many of us are taught by our culture. If we don't love ourselves first, how else can we bring to bear, and to share, all the love that we are? Sharon has unselfishly shown us what self-love truly means by bringing the Buddha's practice of Loving Kindness to the West. With gratitude, and at the risk of using a cliche, I can only say that this practice, and this book, have transformed my life.

This book taught meditation phrases that help one to love oneself and love others (though I like to change phrases like "May I be happy" with "I wish to be happy"). I love this book's teachings on how guilt can be self serving and selfish at times and that remorse over past mistakes is best. I liked its emphasis on self love before loving others. If you are a Christian, I would tell you that this book teaches charity better than the bible does.

I rated this based on the results and not based on how much I enjoyed the book. Just being honest when I say that plenty of the language just did not resonate with me. I recognize the author likely made an attempt to keep the flowery talk to a minimum but for a type A guy with an aversion to touchy-feely language some of it was hard for me to get through. That being said, I do think it nurtured the brahmaviharas in my own practice. So I am glad I read it.

Sharon Salzberg does a great job illustrating the message she is trying to convey in a way that it is easy to understand and interesting. I find her stories of both her and her friends' difficulties and successes along the way in their practices extremely helpful. The stories she relates remind me that it's not expected to be an easy journey, but it is a rewarding one.

We read this book as our second meditation guide. It was good addition to our mindfulness meditation reference library. The exercises are not quite structured enough for a novice mindfulness meditator. We started with Victor Davich's 8-minute mindfulness meditation book. It is great for beginners. We will continue to refer to Sharon Salzberg's Lovingkindness book, but will look for something a little more advanced the the Davich book, and a little more structured that the Salzberg book.
