Susan Rebecca White is the author of three critically acclaimed novels, Bound South, A Soft Place to Land, and A Place at the Table. A graduate of Brown University and the MFA program at Hollins University, Susan has taught creative writing at Hollins, Emory, SCAD, and Mercer University, where she was the Ferrol A. Sams, Jr. Distinguished Chair of English Writer-in-Residence. An Atlanta native, Susan lives in Atlanta with her husband and son.

A good, not a great, book, Susan White did give us some meaty issues that brought forth memories of interesting and touching personal experiences. Purportedly a book revolving around food, the author didn’t really make us feel the comfort nor taste the flavors (please read Like Water For Chocolate, or Blood Bones and Butter). Yes, baking bread was important, and the love of cooking did connect the characters, but it was the important issues of Race, Homosexuality, Religious Beliefs, and Family Unity that shared a place at the table.I longed for deeper development of Alice, loved and suffered for Bobby. Amelia wasn’t my favorite, but I came to agree that she was needed to link the stories together and be the character who learned, changed, and grew from her experiences. Meemaw was perfect and being a Grandmother is a wonderful gift!The ending left me disappointed as I wanted closure and it felt like a cop-out. Perhaps that was White’s intention; letting us fill in the blanks of what happened next. I jest felt the author used too many "tricks" - building a character and dropping them to switch to another and another and then finally uniting them for the contrived, and not so surprising, ending. I'm glad I read A Place At The Table, but I've already put it on the Thrift Store shelf, it's not worth a second read, nor one that I would enthusiastically recommend to friends. There are so many better books out there.

The novel's prologue describes a disturbing scene in Emancipation, North Carolina during the late 20s, but the bulk of the novel takes place during the 1980s in Georgia, Connecticut and New York City. How does a character from an era of lynchings and fear intertwine with more modern characters trying to make their way in NYC? You will enjoy finding out the answer and following the three main characters of Alice, Bobby, and Amelia as they all make their way to find peace with themselves and the world around them.White combines elements of Southern traditions and mores with all the good and bad that these customs hold. With inspired cuisine and accounts of the deeply personal struggles and trials of the characters, White held me captive as I waited to see if Bobby would recover from all of his losses, if Alice would ever reveal what really happened in Emancipation and if Amelia would ever realize what else life had to offer her. Gus and Meemaw are lovable characters that are oft quoted for their wise (and humorous) ways (especially in the first half of the novel).
Having really enjoyed Susan Rebecca White's first two books, I've been waiting anxiously for another. A Place at the Table doesn't disappoint. She tells a great family story with interesting characters, centering on southern cooking (some of the best in the US in my opinion and I'm from the north) and a little New York restaurant. If you're a foodie, a chef, a person who loves to cook, a person who enjoys a good meal, this book is for you. You will get lots of good ideas from the characters. Even if you eat frozen microwave meals, you'll get into this book, and may develop an interest in food and cooking. I believe the author did a lot of research for this novel and consulted a lot of people and so it rings true. The characters of Bobby and Alice are particularly impressive. White has to now be considered a serious writer.
I read this for book club and loved it. In fact, everyone at book club loved it and then my mother's book club chose this book for their group also. We were all surprised by how much we enjoyed the book considering it was a subject that none of us would have ever chosen on our own. The writer's style draws you into the story. It touched on all extremes - rich, poor, urban, rural, gay, straight, black, white, city, country, you name it, it's in there. Loved this book! Thank you Susan Rebecca White!
I thought A Place at the Table was a very good book, I enjoyed it. The story has three main characters and each are definitely brought to life in this very well written novel. I thought the development of the story just a little slow at times, but nothing that I couldn't deal with and at times the story was a little jumpy. I didn't let too much time go by between breaks so that I could keep track of the story. I though, after a rather long book, that the ending was rushed but does tie everything together satisfactorily. Therefore, I'd recommend this book to a reader who is intrigued by the description and would like my opinion as to whether to give it a chance. I am going to try another novel by Ms. White and see what happens!
I loved this book. It was a selection for the Book Trotters, a neighborhood book club that Kathy Harris and I formed a little over two years ago. One of the members chose it for our club as we takes turns selecting the monthly read.I literally had an epiphany while reading this book and moved from my comfortable reading spot with my dogs to email my pastor and tell her "okay, now I get it." I belong to a Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and we welcome all to the communion table. I never realized just how important that is until in the story when a character was denied communion because he was not a member of the church.The book brings to life so many prejudices. Most poignant was the young gay child and the love and acceptance he received from his Southern grandmother.On the light appeal, I loved the emphasis on food and the setting in New York.
