I'm not a huge historical fiction fan, but I'd have to say I enjoyed this book a lot. I almost felt like I was reading The Count of Monte Cristo, but with reincarnation and "soul mates" instead of vengeance.First off, the characters are well-developed, with interesting personalities that are realistic and easy to identify with. They felt a bit too "optimistic" and "heroic" for the modern world we live in, but what's life without escapism? The story held my interest all the way through to the end. The descriptions of everything—setting, background, clothing, sword fights, etc.—were excellent and drew me in. The character of the Maestro (protagonist's teacher) was particularly interesting. On the downside, the story is a bit slower than I expected. There are action scenes, but I never felt any heart-pounding terror or the overwhelming emotion at important deaths. The dialogue was a bit too formal, which slowed down the pace of the interactions. I felt the climax was a bit underwhelming considering all the build-up.But, despite a couple of flaws, the book was overall EXCELLENT. If you like the classics (Three Musketeers, Count of Monte Cristo, etc.), you'll enjoy this one for sure!
I read this in one gulp! Swashbuckling on land and sea, I loved the echoes of Sun-Tzu in the advice of Baker’s fencing master, on-stage only in the memory of René Gilbert, the young protagonist, who wrestles with the complexities of love and honor in 17th century France. (Those complexities reminded me of Perez-Reverte’s Captain Alatriste series.) The naval engagements have stratagems worthy of a Hornblower or a Bolitho or an Aubrey. For me, Baker accomplishes the shadings of past lives between the central characters with a deft hand. Too many times we are told, dare I say lectured, on all the intricacies of a book’s supernatural underpinnings, and not shown. I put myself in the writer’s hands and he delivered. As for the love triangle—two worthy women, one honorable man—I didn’t know who to root for, nor can I guess how Baker will craft a path that satisfies his hero’s need for love, honor, and a just revenge.A fine first novel, I wait impatiently for his next.
The Sun God's Heir is a harrowing piece of fiction, with many unexpected twists and turns that keep the reader engaged. Mr. Baker weaves intricate characters into an exciting plot that becomes more intense as the book progresses. I particularly enjoyed the detail in which he describes society and living conditions of that time in history. Also, the character development of Rene, and his innate talent in sword fighting (which he shares with the beautiful heroine) is both intriguing, and so descriptive one can see the scenes playing out in their mind.Baker crafted this novel to leave the reader wanting more, and he is successful in that endeavor."Sun God" is a quality piece of writing, generated from a genius imagination, I can't wait for the next part of the series!
I read through 20% of the book before I gave up because it was too boring. The descriptions were detailed to the point of verbose. The actions were predictable. In the first fifth of the book, there were only 2 or 3 brief mentions of something Egyptian, which made me wonder when the main story was finally going to get rolling. It could have been a good book - I generally like historical fiction and Rick Riordan's novels. But the writing style just didn't work for me.
A light easy read. A page turner if only due to its meager descriptive elements. The author sinks into metaphysical gibberish far too often. If I had to read how Rene left the physical world and sunk into a deeper sense of his immortal self one more time I would have welcomed his rapier at my neck. The worst offense was when the author treated a normal conversation as if it were a battle, once more using the same metaphysical hokum, when it was a simple request amongst FRIENDS to train one's son. Why is that a battle? Why did Rene have to sink into another realm? Why did I finish reading this trash. What could have been a rollicking adventure became a chore. Don't waste your time.
I am so thrilled I came upon this gem. The characters are so compelling and the settings so lush and detailed, there was no way I could put it down. Sword fights and sheikhs, adventure and love and battles at sea. This book has it all. I can't wait until the book 2 is released!
A great read! From the first sword fight I could not put it down. Adventure, romance, action with just the right amount of his history and mysticism. The main character Rene displays all the qualities a true hero should; loyal, smart, humble, and a ferocious warrior all opponents will fear before their end. I could not help but feel fully immersed in the story. One of the best reads I can remember, I am eagerly anticipating the next book in the series!!
I wanted a chance to escape stress during a busy holiday seasons and I found it with this book! Swords, pirates, magic, and romance all rooted in character and landscape descriptions so deep and I felt completely transported. Everything I was looking for. Can't wait for the next book!
