I was lucky enough to come across John Milton and the terrific writing of his creator, Mark Dawson, back in the early days of the series, back with where was one book and a novella out. I wrote a glowing review of them both for Amazon and for my website because I was hooked immediately. Now with this 13th entry in the series, I am just as committed to the character as I was back then and that is a lot! This adventure takes the reader back to the days just before Milton finds for his own sanity and survival he must make the break from Group 15, the ultra secret member of the British intelligence community responsible for eliminations. Milton knows in his heart that he must get out but the murder of a Russian defector on British soil puts him on another assignment, one what will prove to be, in essense, the piece of straw just before the one that broke the camel's back.I usually do not like prequels that much but after so long in Milton's world, it is really enjoyable seeing what happened just before the first novella.Plus Mark Dawson's writing is always a delight not to be missed.

First of all, let me state that I am on the launch team to preview the book to find errors and to make suggestions to improve the book before release. For that I get the prerelease book free in exchange for an honest review. That said, here is my review:Ever wonder about your neighbors? What is their true background? Are they humans, spies, or what? They maybe even monsters, you never know, do you? In this case the neighbors were monstrous humans living under the guise of being well-to-do normal humans. They did everything everyone else did and fit in perfectly. However, they were sleepers, the name for spies sent from one government to another's country to spy and to carryout clandestine missions.Imaginary, fast paced and full of twists are some more adjectives that fit right in. Here we meet Pope before he became control and we meet John Milton as he is reaching the dangerous point of leaving the agency and seeking treatment his alcoholism. As a recovering alcoholic, I can tell you that there is no cure. But it can be controlled if your heart is in it. In short this is a prequel to the other John Milton novels by Mark Dawson.Erudite, well-planned script, heavy action. The sleepers are Thomas and Amelia Ryan, husband and wife, They murder a former British spy and a former Russian spy in small town. after trying to find the Russian spy's daughter, a Russian physicist who has disappeared with top secret files. After the two retired spies were killed, Group 15 sends John Milton, Pope and Tanner to investigate. MI6 sends one of its own: Ross, an agent fluent in the Russian language. As things unfold, they are able to located the killers by following another spy to them. They plan to attack the house where the Ryans lived, but fail badly and the Ryans escape back to Russia.john, Pope and Ross are sent to Russia to try to find the sleepers and to help then sleep long and deep - forever. While they are setting it up, the mission is altered and some new agents are put into action and Milton is teemed with Ross to meet the dead spy's daughter and to get her to safety.Attention to detail, great plots with lots of surprises are found Mark Dawson's books. They mustreadable and unputdownable.

Did the Cold War with Russia ever end? Spies and sleeper cells are everywhere in this fascinating time in John Milton’s life. Book 13 has a few story threads, Russian spies messing with British spies and vice versa, Milton is Number One at Group Fifteen (so this is some kind of prequel?) and Milton is abusing alcohol and drugs to keep “the memories at arm’s length”. Milton is the best assassin the British have and he is desperate to leave his job. The nightmares, “guilt, resentment, and fear” are destroying him.The beginning quarter of the book moves a little slow, and thank goodness for that. A lot of characters, some repeating from other books in the series, show up with a few different missions to be carried out. There is just a lot to absorb of this complex storyline. As usual with author Mark Dawson, there is an abundance of detail in the descriptions of the Russian society and in the spy culture of Britain and Russia. Freedom of any kind doesn’t seem to be available in either.“Sleepers” will grab hold of you with its engrossing plots, twists, suspense, and surprises. A wonderfully entertaining read!

Sleepers. The 13th in the John Milton series & actually a prequel that opens up some of John Milton’s history and demons. Do not think that you have to have previously read any of the series to be enthralled by this novel!Mark Dawson weaves us a scenario very much tied to current events we’ve seen in the news just this year in Salisbury and surrounding areas. That Dawson had already started Sleepers before any poisonings occurred just adds to the suspense, in my opinion.Sleepers refers to agents embedded into England to do whatever Mother Russia requires needing done. Readers are appalled at the disregard of the sleepers as they assassinate a traitor, his retired handler & an active British agent. We also are introduced to an embedded Russian agent in MI6 as well as an English agent in the SVS. All are scrambling to bring in a Russian looking to sell state secrets after the suspicious death of her husband, one she feels was caused by one of Putin’s cronies. The English are trying to exfiltrate her and the Russians are trying to capture her. We are reacquainted with Milton (Number 1) Pope (Number 5) as well as Control (their Group 15 boss). We get additional background on several newer Group 15 agents recently brought on board.Sleepers is right up at the top of my favorite John Milton stories. It’s a headrush back and forth of whodunit and what’s next! If you like thrillers, stories based on current world situations or even The Americans TV series, Sleepers will keep you engrossed to the last page. Cheers to Mark Dawson on another outstanding effort!Disclosure. I received an advanced reader copy of Sleepers. I loved the book so much I purchased a copy when it was released. My review is completely of my own accord.
