East of Gorontalo Ponga Jim Mayo leaned against the hogshead of tobacco and stared out at the freighter. His faded khaki suit was rumpled, his heavy jaw unshaven. The white-topped cap carried the label “Captain” in gold lettering, but Ponga Jim looked like anything but a master mariner, and felt even less like one. Being broke was a problem anywhere. In Gorontalo it became an emergency of the first water. Everything he owned in the world was on him, from the soft, woven-leather shoes on his feet to the white-topped cap to the big Colt automatic in its shoulder holster. Jim pushed his cap back on his head and glanced at Major Arnold, sitting on a bitt at the edge of the wharf. In his neat white drill and military mustache he could have been nothing but a British officer. “Tell me, William,” Jim said, “just what brings a big-shot intelligence officer to Celebes? Something in the wind?” “You get around a lot, don’t you?” Major William Arnold lighted a cigarette and glanced up at Jim. “Yeah, when I can.” Ponga Jim grinned. “Right now I’m on the beach, and it looks like I’m not getting off for a while. But there isn’t much in the Indies I don’t know.” Arnold nodded. “I know. You might do me some good, Jim. If you see anything suspicious, give me a tip, will you? There’s a rumor around that while England’s busy in Europe, there will be a move to pick up some of her colonies in the Far East. This is a Dutch colony, but we’re cooperating.” “Then,” Mayo said thoughtfully, nodding his head toward the broadbeamed, battered tramp freighter, “you might add her to your list of suspects.” “That’s the Natuna out of Surabaya, isn’t it? Didn’t you used to be her skipper?” “Yeah.” Ponga Jim shifted his position to let the breeze blow under his coat. He was wearing a gun, and the day was hot. “Then the company sold her to Pete Lucieno, and I quit. I wouldn’t work for that dope peddler on a bet. I’m no lily of the valley, and frankly, I’m not making any boasts about being above picking up a slightly illegal dollar—I’ve made some of your British pearl fisheries out of season before now, and a few other things—but I draw the line at Pete’s kind of stuff.” “No love lost, I guess?” Arnold squinted up at Jim, smiling. “Not a bit. He’d consider it a privilege to cut my heart out. So would Dago Frank, that majordomo of his, or Blue Coley. And I don’t fancy them.” Major Arnold soon left, walking back up toward the club. Ponga Jim lighted a cigarette and stared thoughtfully at the Natuna. Then his eyes shifted to the other ship in port, a big white freighter, the Carlsberg. Although there were three or four schooners, and a scattering of smaller craft, it was the two freighters that held his attention. “Now, William,” he said whimsically, “you should never miss a bet. Being an old seafaring man, it strikes me as being somewhat phony for that native scow to be shoving herself around in circles. Especially, when she goes behind the Carlsberg riding high and comes out with darn little freeboard. Then she wanders around, gets behind the Natuna, and comes out riding high in the water again. “Now the only Carlsberg I ever knew sailed out of Bremen, not Copenhagen.” Mayo’s eyes flickered to the sleek white Carlsberg. “So, putting a possibility of registry changed from Bremerhaven to Copenhagen, some mysterious goings-on connected with the Natuna, a scow whose owners would frame their mothers for a dollar six-bits, a war, and William’s rumors, what do you have?” Ponga Jim Mayo straightened up and sauntered off down the dock. It was nearly sundown, and the seven guilders that remained in his pocket suggested food. After that— JIM WALKED INTO Chino John’s and stopped at the bar. “Give me a beer,” he said, glancing around. A man standing nearby turned to face Mayo. “Well, if it isn’t my old friend Ponga Jim!” he sneered. “On the beach again, no?” Jim looked at Dago Frank coolly and then past him at Lucieno. The fat little Portuguese glistened with perspiration and ill-concealed hatred. “Yeah,” Jim said. “Anytime to keep out of the company of rats.” “I disdain that remark,” Lucieno said. “I disdain it.” “You’d better,” Jim said cheerfully. “If you took it up, I’d pull your fat nose for you!” Dago Frank’s eyes narrowed. He stepped closer. “Then maybe you pull mine, eh?” he challenged. Ponga Jim’s right fist snapped up in a jarring right that knocked every bit of wind from Dago Frank’s body. Then jerking him erect, Mayo jolted another six-inch punch into his midsection and dropped him to the floor. Coolly, he picked up his beer and drank it, and then he turned and looked at Lucieno. The fat Portuguese began to back away, his face white. Jim grinned. “Okay, pal,” he said cheerfully. “It was just a little lesson to teach your boyfriend to talk nice to his superiors. Next time—” He shook his finger warningly and turned away. Arnold was standing on the boardwalk as Jim strode through the swinging doors. He chuckled, clapping Jim on the shoulder. “That was great! Everybody in the Dutch East Indies has been hoping to see that pair get called. But you’ve made an enemy, and a nasty one.” “That’s just the fifth episode,” Mayo said, shrugging. “I beat them out of a cargo of copra and pearl shell down in the Friendly Islands about three years ago. About six months later they tried to kidnap old Schumann’s daughter over in the Moluccas. They were going to sell her to some native prince. I put a stop to that, and a couple of their boys got tough.” “What happened to them?” “You know, William,” Jim said seriously, “I was trying to remember the other day. They had an accident or something.” He straightened his tie, and gave the automatic a hitch into a better position. “By the way, William,” he asked carelessly, “where’s the Natuna bound this trip?” “To Port Moresby, with general cargo.” Ponga Jim walked down the street, and when he turned at the corner, glanced back. Major Arnold, his neat, broad-shouldered, compact figure very casual, was standing in front of Chino John’s. Jim grinned, and turned the corner carelessly. Then, suddenly alert, he wheeled and darted down an alley, turned into a side street, and cut through the scattering of buildings toward the dock. The British Intelligence was convenient at times, at others, a nuisance. There was no one in sight when he reached the dock. He let himself down the piling and crawled into a skiff moored there in the dark. Quickly, he shoved off. Overhead there was a heavy bank of clouds. The night was very still, and the skiff made scarcely a shadow as it slipped through the dark water. Staying a hundred yards off, Ponga Jim avoided the lighted gangway and cautiously sculled the boat around to the dark side of the Natuna. There was no one in sight, so with painstaking care he drifted the boat nearer and nearer to the silent ship. When he came alongside he laid his paddle down and stood up, balancing himself. Fortunately, the sea was still. Picking up the heaving line lying in the stern of the boat, Mayo tossed the monkey’s fist around a stanchion of the taffrail, and catching the ball, he pulled it down.

My review is of the hardcover large print book NOT the audioCD....Amazon got it wrong.I'm a big fan of the late great author Louis L'Amour. I read 8 of his western novels, almost all 5 stars, The Lonesome Gods, The Walking Drum and the Haunted Mesa ( his only sci fi), The Last of The Breed, all 5 stars....see my reviews. Many believe Louis was a world class western writer only( he did write a lot of them) but he was much more....a total author. Here is a superb collection of short stories written by L'Amour across decades of writing. All were excellent and I enjoyed them all. What impressed me most with this collection was the diversity of the stories. Many different subject maters, great characters and various times in history. Also you can tell L'Amour actual visited several of these worldwide places, worked in some of the jobs and did a lot of historical research to add to accuracy to some of his fiction. Some of the shorter stories can be read in 20 minutes,so are great to read while getting an oil change or waiting for a doctor or dentist visit. Some of the stories are longer and take a few hours. Stories about the US depression era, pre WW2 and WW2 commercial shipping tied into German and Japanese expansion attempts, far east adventure, South American jungle adventure and more. Sea captain heroes, sea plane heroes, lost cities of gold in the jungles, beautiful women, lots of fighting, double crossing spies and much much more. Lots of action brought to you very quickly as they are short stories. Here is a collection opposite to the many westerns he wrote. There are no US wild westerns in this large collection.Take your time reading this collection. Enjoy it. Pace yourself and enjoy a story or two/day. That way you can enjoy reading this large collection 1137 pages a long time. I liked this book so much I'll be getting as many of his other short story collections used at reduced prices that I can afford plus more of his novels.Like Louis said on page 1135..."I'd like to be remembered...as a storyteller. A good story teller." INMO he was an EXCELLENT story tell...one of America's best. 5 stars and recommended.

Louis L'amour is the greatest writer of Westerns in the US if not the world. (Of coarse, this is only my opinion.) His stories, both short and long, are interesting and engaging. (It also helps that the good guy usually wins. :-)) They are accurate and my favorite short stories with Chick Bowdrie, the Texas Ranger who always saves the day. What I find especially entertaining about the books, is that when I listen to them and they have the full cast dramatization, I almost feel like I'm there with them and can picture the house or the town or the ranch etc. etc. Both my father and mother read them all and enjoy them very much, so no matter what the format, a book, take, or CD, you will enjoy them time and time again.

I found I had already read these stories since I had the hardback edition. I always enjoy his stories, short or long.

This is the final book in my collection of Louis L'amour books. It has got to the point that I put a small pencil dot inside the front cover after reading, so I can tell if I have read the book. Except for the Sacket's , which I'll read again as they are so good. The short stories are okay, but I need to develop a character within the story line. I'll read them anyway.

The book is about 3-inches thick and heavy, which is a problem for my 88-year-old dad. He loves the stories but has trouble holding the book for long.

I have read three volumes of L'Amour's Collected Western Short Stories and really enjoyed them. I didn't know if I would feel the same way about his Adventure Stories but found them just as enjoyable to read. They are easy reading and hold your attention. I am looking forward to purchasing additional volumes of his short stories.

They were fascinating stories on the war with Germany then the beginning of WW2 with Japan. A lot of action and thrill's. Hope I read more of these kinds of stories.

Full of great short stories of the old west by the best author. Not a complex book. It is great entertainment if you like western stories of the old west. I consider it light reading with plenty of action in varied scenarios. Very enjoyable.

Hi, would be great to read this Kindle book, but you cannot. The ebook uses a symbol for the chess piece when describing a move. So Bxh3 becomes .xh3 because the symbol is the size of a pinhead. Changing the font size doesn't change the size of the symbols.

A great look at how Fischer moved and thought during his games. I picked up some valuable pointers just within the first ten pages. A worthwhile read for chess players at any level. I've been playing for 55 years. I highly recommend this book.

Love this book! A must have for any chess aficionado. I went through every game on my chess board from start to finish while relishing Fischer’s incisive, often pithy, commentaries. Wonderful to witness on your favorite board the beauty of chess piece arrangements as they dance to the final death of the king.

This is very cool book that lets you read exactly what a chess expert was thinking whilst playing. Even though the material is a bit above my head at times, it's very fun to use a board & follow along.

This should be on the bookshelf of any competitive player. It's one of the classics, like Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual, or My System. Fischer's games have been analyzed to death, but this is a chance to see how his mind worked while playing them.

Great condition.Inspires, motivates me to study chess .Peter biyasas a chess player said He reached international master level by reading only 2 books,This book and rook ending by Levenfish and Smylov according to Wikepedia. On the back it say Perhaps the most inspiring and Influential chess book of ALL TIME,i wouldnt be surprised if it is. One should read a book perhaps Lev alburts Comprehensive Chess course ,chess fundamental by jose capablanca and maybe a 1 or 2 more product that give Foundation with no holes. Not stricly neccessary as long as it inspires you like Peter biyasas.

I gave my old copy from 1972 to a young person who was just starting out. I really missed it over the years so I bought the new one with algebriacnotations. It's like meeting an old friend again after a long passage of time.

Just the right book for a beginner. Looking at the thought processes is a bit difficult; however, in the long run it is an excellent book.

The sacred canopy is the universal world view that any religion proposes, thanks to human consciousness. This interpretation is mostly of the historic religions of the West and the secularization of these since the Enlightenment. All canopies alienate people from others, so all religions embark on separate marketing campaigns, like New Orthodoxy or Liberal Catholicism. The 'sociological theory of religion' is as follows.Consciousness externalizes or seeks to make inner experiences concrete in the outer experiences of the surrounding world. Religion constructs a sacred canopy, or all-embracing world order (Chapter 1).Producing sacred order is 'part of the same activity that produces society,' a result of consciousness that externalizes ideas (Chapter 2).The 'sacred canopy' is an all-embracing order that maintains society against chaos (Chapter 3).But there is chaos; and the suffering of the innocent, threatens the maintenance of institutional order, and poses the 'problem of theodicy.' People must accept or reject one or more aspects of social order. Religious experience is fundamentally alienating because it 'projects human meanings into the empty vastness of the universe '– a projection...which comes back as an alien reality to haunt its producers' (100). This is 'religion and alienation' (Chapter 4).Experiences remove sectors of society from the domination of religious definitions and symbols. This is the 'process of secularization' (Chapter 5).No competent authority imposes religious traditions any longer, so religions have to market their traditions. This poses them the 'problem of plausibility' (Chapter 6: 138).Since the surrounding social milieu no longer takes any orthodoxy's definitions of reality for granted, each religion organizes as a minority against a hostile, at least non-believing, milieu The poses the 'problem of legitimation' (Chapter 7).Alienation, or commitment to one view devalues other views, is endemic to religion. Any experience that casts doubt on the alienating view, however, threatens anomy, or 'bad faith' in the rightness of the particular view. For instance, the Jewish Covenant chose a minority and so alienated the 'Chosen People' from humanity in general. And Christian 'other-worldliness' completely disenfranchised the world, alienating people from this world. Again, the classic Moslem view alienates Islam from both, Judaism and Christianity, because they fell from true monotheism by adopting hullul, the doctrine of incarnation, as if anyone or anything could stand beside God or act as the mediator between God and humanity (121).Superb scholarship, complete indexing, readable academic prose, if somewhat dense in page-long paragraphs.

If professor Berger was trying to impress me with his vocabulary he certainly succeeded. Unfortunately my need to look up the meaning of so many words and untranslated Latin phrases made it difficult to concentrate on the content of his sentences, some of which I had to read 3 times to comprehend. However, once comprehended, the book is brilliant and I will certainly reread it frequently.

I bought this book for a graduate seminar on the sociology of religion, and it's an excellent jumping off point. Berger does an excellent job of taking you from the very beginning (his epistemology) to "empirical" evidence supporting his theory. I use quotation marks because it's a topic for debate (whether or not the argument is truly empirical let alone a solid support system for his claims).Berger writes in a much more approachable way than, let's say, Max Weber but isn't as abrasive as Karl Marx. But, his writing is provocative. I'm unsure how a religiously devout person would swallow some of his imagery, but it makes for a good read.

Essential Reading for understanding the "Sociology of Knowledge" as it applies to religious experience. Yes, it is a bit "dated" as any 50 year old book would be; however, his analysis and theory is spot-on-correct. I am indebted to Peter Berger for his clear, insightful perspective.

This book is essential to any student of religion or theology. Berger explores the complex relationship of internalization of beliefs and how these are externalized into our daily lives. This is an absolute necessity, even if you happen to disagree with Berger. This is one of the top sociological works of the 20th century.

This book is a must for anyone interested in the study or experience of religion in the modern world. Part one highlights the human need for meaning and order that is rooted in something less transient than human existence, and the way religion functions as a "shield" against various existential terrors. Although somewhat dated, the analysis of modern religion presented in part two is valuable for its discussions of how secularization has roots within religion itself, and how the relationships between religious denominations and the rest of society can be profitably described in terms borrowed from market economics. The book is highly readable, frequently funny, and provides a lucid introduction to a particular sociology of knowledge as well as a useful perspective on religion.

Very dry and academic. Used for sociology class but continue to use it for other classes.

Berger's book, whether you agree with his likely personal beliefs or not, takes a person through religion and how religion functions within society to the secularization and pluralism of America. Well-written and a must-read to understand culture and religion.

The Assault on Intelligence is not just another polemic about a truth free President with a lack of intelligence as to information and cognitive skill. The reason is that it can be read in conjunction with his earlier book Playing on the Edge. Playing was written prior to this presidency and so contains analysis that can not be said to be shaded by the inadequacies of the present incumbent in the White House. These books should be read together. The discussions with President Bush regarding detentions, renditions and interrogations and the briefings to President Obama regarding covert programs in Playing on the Edge show presidents intent on learning the minutia of these actions. Though the author was not in office during the present administration it is clear from his background that he knows how Trump is perceived by the intelligence agencies and why. The classic example he refers to is the visit of the President to the CIA when he talked about how he caught the media in a lie regarding the size of his inaugural crowd. This to a group of people who stake their reputations on checking and rechecking facts which is detailed in Playing on the Edge.During the campaign the incumbent turned the intelligence briefers into political props and campaign tools and alleged that he could tell what they were thinking from body language which it is apparent from Playing would never happen.Interesting, in Assault it is made clear that the intelligence institutions took down Mike Flynn, not the Obama administration. From Playing, it is clear why. From the two books it is apparent that Michael Hayden contributes a cohesive understanding of the full picture of the damage the present administration has done to the professionals in the intelligence community. These books make it clear that agree or not with what covert action has been carried out in the past the average intelligence analyst has reason to wonder whether there is a thinking rational being at the other end of his work product. As a politically liberal reader, these texts make it possible to understand the threat to real facts communicated to the incumbent President in what he might do with them. Marge Haskell Instructor, Political Science Berkeley City College

General Hayden writes very well. There are many informed people writing books about the state of the U.S.; but of those I've read none other is laid out in a chronology, vocabulary and style that will make sense to the general public. Hayden's "Assault on Intelligence" moves as only first class prose can.The warning he sounds isn't the first we've heard since Donald Trump took office; but maybe this one is so clear, so fact-based and so chillingly frightening that Americans of all stripes will begin paying attention. If we do not trust and respect our institutions; we have no government.

General Hayden has, with great clarity, laid out the facts and conclusions of the most dangerous threat to our republic. Never in my lifetime did I expect to see an attack on our most important institutions of justice and intelligence. What is most frightening is the blind eye some in Congress have turned to any corruption and crimes that this administration have committed. This is an excellent book and I thank General Hayden for submitting this work to the ordinary American and to the future citizens of the United States who will seek to understand this dark chapter in our country's political system.

An eye opening insider's view of the death of truth and analytical fact based thinking in America in general and the Trump White house in particular. The extent to which Russian exploit of social media impacted the 2016 election is frightening and incontrovertible. The only think more scary is the willful ignorance of the President and those duped by their own shallow ignorance. The world is a complex place where we need the expertise if the best and the brightest. Hayden shines as one of America's brightest most genuinely patriotic citizens. Unlike our current commander in chief who treats truth and facts as inconvenient irritants. Highly recommended.

Incredibly well written, lots of different references to history, culture. Honest.

General Hayden (USAF, Ret.) was an officer of moderation and discipline when he was serving so this book will surprise those who knew him then. He is unsparing in his criticism of President Trump and the Trump Administration. Hayden has concluded that the President and his team have no concept of evidence based decision making or the difference between truth and falsehood. Hayden of course marshals a good deal of facts to support these conclusions. He was particularly incensed when the President on several occasions referred to the members of the Intelligence Community (IC) as "Nazis" without even thinking about the term. Hayden also is angry at the President's obvious distrust and disinterest in national intelligence reports and findings. Well the supporters of President Trump will undoubtedly ignore this book as an pathetic attempt by the "Deep State" to undermine his presidency while his detractors will consider the book as additional evidence of the President's unfitness for the job.
