A fabulous read which has everything! Sarai, Thaddeus' daughter is kidnapped by a cell of Muslims who want the money he got from his successful case against the Chicago mob, over $450,000,00! As Thaddeus scrambles to get the ransom together, a mother of two, Latoya Staples, struggles with the birth of her third, which progresses to a critical stage. Where is the doctor? Thaddeus manages to get most of the money the kidnappers want and sends it to an untraceable account overseas. Sarai is returned home but is psychically scarred. Meanwhile, Latoya is distraught because her labor is past the point of no return when the OB arrives fourteen minutes past the "Decision Incision" deadline. The unspeakable damage is done, a "Bad Baby" is born with severe brain damage which was avoidable! She and her husband, John, take the baby, Chance, home with them as the horrible truth continues. Because of his brain damage, he is inconsolable except for fifteen minutes at a time. The parents have two older children who need them. Stretched beyond human limits, they seek medical treatment at only to be told that their insurance only provides long-term, placement in medical facility which is unacceptable to them. They try Medicaid but there is no money for home care in the budget. At this point they procure the services of Thaddeus Murfee. Thaddeus and his family have moved back to Chicago after selling the casino previously awarded to him back to Chicago after selling the casino previously awarded to him. He becomes obsessed with punishing his daughter's kidnappers. However, the FBI, who have been servailling the terrorists, notice that three of the six man cell turn up murdered! The only person with a motive is Thaddeus. The insurance company covering the Staples, the OB and the hospital are resorting to illegal and inconceivable methods to avoid paying at all costs. Can the FBI shop the killings? And how is Thaddeus going to get past the deceit being perpetrated by the defendants? Read on my friend!

Ellsworth's books are based on unique ideas. I started with The Young Lawyer and am now up to The Mental Case. I don't always like the titles -- "Bad Baby", "Mental Case"? but it always becomes evident within the book why the titles are chosen. They refer to terms that insensitive (IMHO) characters in the books use to describe key characters. Altho' Ellsworth is not a brilliant writer, the uniqueness of his ideas make the books worth a read. They're also very reasonably priced compared to other authors. I recommend him.

Probably I shouldn't have even bothered to read this book because I do find these enormous sums o money handed to families for one reason or another, grossly over the top. This is simply because lawyers take such a huge cut for their fees. We never had this in the past but now it's also common practice in the UK and what cost the NHS so much in paying insurances. I'm quite sure this is also the case in the USA that hospital treatment etc., is way over the top in fees due to their high costs of administration and insurances.

Even though John Ellsworth is newly one of my favorite authors, I didn't like this book as much as I liked the first one I read, which had him chasing mafia types in Italy and, sadly, losing his wife Katy in the end.The main part of this book regarding baby Chase, was excellent , but the parts after the trial ended, not so appealing. I haven't been reading the Thaddeus Murfee books in chronological order, or I would not have read that other one (think it was, "The Near Death Experience") first. But, you have to hand it to him, he's a brilliant author. I'm just not sure about some of Thaddeus's methods of taking the law into his own hands. I mean, he seems to be best friends with the fibbies, so why does he have to do the dirty work himself? If you are also an Ellsworth fan, you will like it, I'm sure.

Great psychological study. I found it interesting and factual about mental illness and birth defects. Mr. Ellsworth has thoroughly researched malpractice studies and the cover-ups that can and do occur. Many, myself included, will have had doctors' errors in their own lives. I love the fact that the author places the reader into the courtroom, allowing the victims and their families some closure with similarities that often occurred to others. Great story!

Book was VERY revelatory to me. Surely there aren't groups of lawyers who work behind the scenes to distort/rewrite medical records to keep insurance companies from having to pay-out on serious malpractice claims?????? S...i...g...h (I'm sure there really ARE)!Towards the end the book took a sharp turn that left the door open for future Thaddeus capers, but didn't fit the rest of the book very well. (sorry John, ya' know I love your books). Because of this disjoint, I'm giving the book 4 stars.

I really like John Ellsworth and have bought all of his books. I am a medical malpractice attorney so I am not your average reader of a book about a medical malpractice case. But I found much of the case trite and badly written. As for what he did in his private life, I can not write about this without giving anything away but it was absurd. He can do much better than this. I already have his new book and look forward to reading it. I am sure he will get back on track.

The story was very good but the ending didn't have anything to do with the first part of the book. The ending could have been a wonderful book all on its own. For me pick one subject and do the book. I will read either kind of book but don't stick them together.
