This book was published 2 days before I returned from a tour of Mongolia. I ordered it as a reference to my trip. There is much good information, notably the section on Nomadic Naadam (pg 103). This wonderful venue saved my trip when the Naadam festival I was schedule to see was postponed due to drought.There are also glaring omissions. One of the major attractions - the stainless steel statue of Chingiss Khan is missing from this guide. There is a reference in the index (p154 but there is nothing there), and a mention that there is a statue (p13 mentions p91), but there is no description, no directions and the attraction/town (Tsonjin Boldog) is not described or in the index.Finally, I know it's always a tough trade off on the size of a travel book versus the size of the print, but I really have to strain to read the text.
There are not many current travel guides for Mongolia. I thought that the Lonely Planet Guide answered the really important questions regarding climate, electricity, money, Internet access, cuisine, tipping, photographing people, telephone codes, visas, vaccinations, transportation, etiquette, and even toilets.I like the organization of the book. It is organized by region and has suggested itineraries. Finally, I enjoyed the photos and the writer's commentary throughout the guide. That said, I think that it is important to check out the itineraries of tours on-line so that you have an idea of where to go and what to see while you are there. The Internet has additional information about Mongolia. One resource is not really enough for any trip.
