About the Author

David Kushner is an award-winning journalist and author of many books, including three on gaming: Masters of Doom, Jonny Magic and the Card Shark Kids, and Jacked: The Outlaw Story of Grand Theft Auto. A contributing editor of Rolling Stone and the 2016 Ferris Professor of Journalism at Princeton University, Kushner has written for GQ, the New Yorker, the New York Times, and elsewhere. This book is based on his 2008 Wired profile of Gary Gygax and extensive interviews with both Gygax and Dave Arneson-Dungeons & Dragons' co-creators-before they died. Koren Shadmi is an American Israeli cartoonist and illustrator. His graphic novels have been published internationally, and include In the Flesh, The Abaddon, Mike's Place, and Love Addict: Confessions of a Serial Dater. His work has appeared in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Mother Jones, Village Voice, Playboy, Washington Post, Wired, and elsewhere. Rise of the Dungeon Master is an okay graphic novel, but falls short of being an excellent work.Up front disclaimer—I was a writer and editor for Gary’s projects in the later years of his life and knew him pretty well. So I want to make sure I take note of any potential bias up from. Also, I am reviewing the paper copy of the book, not the Kindle edition. Take note that this is a black and white graphic novel, there’s no color art outside of the cover.At first, you would think a graphic novel of Gary Gygax’s life would be a very interesting work. I was interested in how the work would be presented, and if it would be an entertaining read. I am a gaming fan but I am also a long-time comics fan, and I have read many graphic novels, including biographical and autobiographical ones. Sadly, I only got a “meh” feeling from this project.What people may not know is that the author of this work (David Kushner) is more or less taking a lot of the graphic novel’s structure from a single article written shortly after Gary passed away in Wired magazine titled Dungeon Master: The Life and Legacy of Gary Gygax. Much of the text in the work comes from this article, including most of the dialog and quotes. In short, this graphic novel is an adaptation of a magazine article, and not an original work designed for the format.You could still have a decent graphic novel from an article, but the new format has problems. The Wired article used what D&D players might know as “boxed notation”. That is, rather than just not narrate the article or use a third person narration device, the book’s chapters begin with narration in what might first appear to be “second person” narration, but it’s trying to evoke a dungeon master talking to the players in a tabletop RPG. While it is a decent device in the original article (which is aimed at people know are in the know about RPGs), it ends up not being good in the graphic novel—it makes for a very weird structure that isn’t as compelling. If the "you are" viewpoint was Gary Gygax’s, it might be good, but it switches to other people. I simply don’t think this works well unless you are “in the know” as a gamer…people who’ve never played D&D but want to learn about the subject are probably not going to be satisfied. I think it might have worked better if the graphic novel had more of a third party narration and also tried to tell the story via dialog, like a screenplay.For one already knowledgeable of the creation of D&D, there’s not a lot of stuff that is new to read. In fact, so much stuff is skipped over. Don Kaye (co-founder of TSR) appears, and a few of Gary’s relatives, but there’s not much about any early staff members or the growth of TSR. The narrative also takes some liberties with the order of things—for instance, the Gygax-Arneson lawsuit and settlement appears to occur as soon as Lorraine Williams takes over the company, but this was actually a few years before that. Instead, this graphic novel spends a little more time talking about the sensational controversies of D&D that happened in the early 1980, as well as also talking about the influence of D&D on the culture from computer games to celebrities who play it.Reviewing the artist—Koren Shadmi does a pretty good job of getting the likenesses of Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson well, at least in their elder day. I am not sure how much references Mr. Shadmi had. He’s a decent artist, some of his style reminds me a bit of Scott McCloud, but he’s also not what I would call in the “top tier” of comic book artists either. I’m not sure what he was using for references—it was easier to draw Gygax and Arneson in their recent years. There probably wasn’t much original research that I could see—it’s probably based on whatever public photos could be found—for instance, Lorraine Williams is portrayed almost exactly like the one photograph I am aware of (a photo in the D&D Anniversary boxed set, necklace and all). If the party at the beginning of the book was at Gary Gygax’s home at the time, he got the exterior and porch wrong, though it looks like the one interior shot might have been correct. (The old “famous” house where D&D was created and played in the basement is shown a few times). I was also disappointed by the fonts used—especially the one used in the narration blocks—it looks more like a horror font and not a font used for general exposition. I think a few good Comic Craft fonts would have been a good investment.I think the book is okay as a primer for somebody who doesn’t know anything about Gary Gygax and D&D’s creation, but only as that. I think long-time gamers would probably want something meatier, and fans of biographies might be put off by the odd structure and narrative skips. One person asked me if this was a good thing for younger kids to read. It could have been, but they have at least one F-bomb quote from Gary as well as mention a porn star who loved D&D, so I’m not sure this would be a good work for a pre-teen to read.I’m giving it 3 stars out of five. It’s an interesting work, but falls short of what I would want to see in a biographical graphic novel.

Not terribly made. Love the production quality. But the shoehorned religious message at the end made me feel very uncomfortable. It felt incredibly out of place, and capped off an otherwise decent and fact-based story with a message about believing in the afterlife. It just felt wrong and preachy, as it had little to nothing to do with the entire book previous.

Just received my copy today! I noticed some 1 star reviews because this is a comic book, which I think is unfair rating since its clearly described as an illustrated graphic non-fiction story. In terms of contents, beautifully drawn in black and white and illustrative of the life and events of Gary Gygax in the formative years of Dungeons and Dragons. I think this is the perfect media to showcase Gygax's life as D&D is itself a visual medium. I really like the touches of nostalgia and the way the illustrator lays out the panels and the story. Mr. Kushner does a very good job of giving us the story of the creator of D&D in a way that is fresh and original. While this is not an academic or biographical work, it is an innovative way of showcasing the life and times of Gygax in creating the worlds greatest role playing game. Highly recommended for the shelf of any lover of D&D.

The very model of a graphic novel. Beautiful halftone illustrations, well written and nicely produced, telling a nonfiction story in an interesting, dramatic way. As a second-gen AD&Der (early 1980s), I enjoyed learning more about Gary Gygax and his ultimately sad journey.

I learned something. I’m just not sure a graphic novel was necessary though. Felt sort of unnecessary, having illustrations of business meetings, Gen Con gatherings, and people engaged in nerdy gaming. Ok for either my comic collection, or my AD&D collection.

Well written loving tribute but skips the drama. The story works better without the infighting and backstabbing but it is not the whole truth. However it does good at showing the love and passion they had for gaming.

An interesting comic book style story of the great creators of D&D. A Very balanced perspective from an obviously well researched D&D fan. Worth the investment of time to read.

I definitely would recommend this to my friends, it give an interesting look into the mind of Gygax and the trials that he and his fellow founders went through in the beginning.

Fantastic Chaote approach to the Dark Arts. Although the author has a background in Setianism and Satanism, you don't have to be of that persuasion to use this magick. But you have to be open minded enough to align yourself to the dark spiritual current that this work belongs to. It is in fact, adversarial. These aren't nice spirits. They are heinous. Absolute MONSTERS! If you are a properly individuated Mage, you could do well with this, but not if you are a petulant teenage devil worshipper with mommy and daddy issues. I guarantee you'll get your butt kicked if you don't use this magick responsibly and carefully. The author offers ample warnings in the book. Be wise and heed them. Also you are aligning yourself to the spirits here. Not forcing them through strong and offensive conjuring as in the Goetia. You might get better results with this method, but be careful. Make sure you're in a balanced emotional state and make sure you know your own Dark Side.

If you use the formulas in this book, you had better have a damn good reason... This is like a military grade battle rifle, you lock this up in a safe and use it only when SHTF. It is a great study aid, and will teach you a great number of things about Qayins work in general, his use of Angles and Triangles of Arte to harness the energies latent in strange angles. It has, like most of Qayins work, a touch of the Lovecraftian Chaos that inspires him, the 23 current, running throughout it, with references to the Necronomicon and other Mythos oriented ideas, but by no means should this be mistaken for idle fantasy.No...These are the deadly Djinn from the ancestral nightmares of our ancient forefathers stretching back across time to the distant past. These beings have been waiting to be rediscovered and used again, and are desperate to do what they are meant to do... these beings are not benign, nor malevolent, they are hired guns, killers who love to kill and main and torment, and you had better really be sure you want to hurt someone before even contemplating using this book.I would say that if mankind every does restore it's faith in magick, this book would be classified as a WMD and anyone who owned it would be treated like a terrorist, this would be forbidden knowledge in the extreme.I can't say for sure whether or not the rituals in this book work from my own experience, and I hope I never need to. But I have been told anecdotal stories and those who have used it... They said the effect was so dramatic and diabolical... they hope to never need to use it again...If nothing else, this book contains secrets and concepts that you can apply to other black magick rituals, the various triangles of Arte, Lunate script, and other ritual concepts are ripe for use by any chaote looking to add some artistic nuances to their rituals.Qayin does it like nobody else. The man is a true artist.

An excellent book, not something for beginners or those who are not seriously committed to the darker aspects of magick. If you aren't willing to perform Baneful magick yourself, you should not purchase this book. Powerful, simple, beautiful, and deadly. This is a book of truly black, devastating, and Baneful magick. The author knows what He's talking about, and his writing style is very engaging and easy to read.

I'd been dragging my feet on this for years. My dreams have been far more telling then ever before, and this was one of the things that was suggested to me through that medium. I finally got it, and I couldn't be happier. If you work with the Djinn, or anything related to Goetia, and 'demons', you need to get this. Give it a shot, what's the worst that could happen, you get what you desire?

Amazing tome! This author is incredible! Comprehensive and easy to follow, the circles and triangles of are, and lunate script are something to behold, and very effective. The information and rites provided are both relevant and versatile... I've used much of these ideas in my personal work (outside of djinn) I would highly recommend any work by S. Ben Quayin! This man is more than just an author, he is an artist of the highest caliper, and his work shows it!

Gave good insight how to work with the book. If you really want to destroy an enemy with hatred and rage, and one of these entities decides to work with you, your adversary is doomed. I would never want to be on the receiving end of an attack from these spirits. Use this book with caution and make certain to have a good reason and target.

I love this book. Very descriptive and well written. Ive read other books about the Djinn, but this is by far the best one in my opinion.

I thought it was going to be one book bound with the multiple stories. This contains multiple bound books inside the box, which my kids will inevitably scatter, but I’m sure my daughter will enjoy reading her favorite characters at her level.

Story is short and easy to read. My 4 years old boy love it

Patience is not only a virtue, but also--in the case of this book--a joy. I had to read a good 25 percent of it before I could really get into it. Why? The cast of characters is very large, and it takes that long to introduce them and tell each of their stories in a compelling way.Here's the premise of the plot: The book follows the lives of the residents of London's Pepys Lane, who live in homes that are now—astonishingly to some of them—worth well more than $1 million British pounds. For months, the residents have been receiving postcards with a photo of their home on one side and the words "We Want What You Have" on the other. It takes a good while before any of them take this seriously, most thinking it is some kind of real estate marketing scheme. But it's not. And since the characters are experiencing so many of life's problems both big and small, most of them think something along the lines of: "Ha! You can have what I have. Take it!"However, the strength of the story is not in the plot. It is in the characters, and the fact that author John Lanchester successfully juggles them all and fully engages the reader in all their fates is kind of amazing. This is an expert writer at work, folks. The characters are so diverse! Some (but not all) of them include a dying 82-year-old woman, a young family with two children, too much money and too much entitlement, a 17-year-old football (soccer) phenom from Senegal who barely speaks English and a Muslim family who runs a convenience store at the end of the street. Also included in the cast of characters are people who serve or somehow interact with the residents on Pepys Lane.This book is filled with wisdom and emotion and what it feels like to be truly human—no matter our age, ethnicity or status in life. It is a joy to read!P.S. The Kindle version is extremely helpful. The X-Ray feature is quite useful for keeping track of the myriad cast of characters, while the dictionary is an expert source at deciphering the British slang that is peppered throughout the story.

This is a book about a road in London, or more precisely, about the people who live live and work there. It is also about London at the time of the financial meltdown of 2008. This may sound dry and boring, but believe me it is not.Not only has Lanchester chosen a wide range of interesting characters to focus on, but he also has a conversational writing style that is at once easy to read yet gets to the meat of the matter every time. To make the story even more riveting, there is a mystery underlying all the action. A harassing postcard stalker plagues the residents and adds a layer of unease to each of their already uneasy lives.This is not a book for someone who likes action and adventure, but rather for someone who enjoys delving behind the facade of people and places unlike himself. I found it fascinating. I will keep an eye out for John Lanchester in the future.

Anyone who has ever strolled a neighborhood as the day is ending and lamps briefly illuminate interiors before the curtains are closed, has wondered about the lives of the people who live inside. The author of Capitol swings wide each door and invites us in to sit comfortably and observe, unseen, the real people residing there, meeting their daily challenges, the joys, the stress, the absurdity of modern life just as we do. Enthralling!

I first heard about this novel on Felix Salmon's Slate Money podcast. Felix cited it as one of the only novels that looked at the 2008 financial crisis from the British viewpoint. This is not quite accurate. The book takes place at the same time, but there is very little about financial goings-on. But I am not criticizing John Lanchester for the book he didn't write. In fact, I am not criticizing this book at all. At first, I checked this book out of the library. Within the first 20 pages I knew I'd want to take my time with it, so I immediately returned it and bought the Kindle version. And I'm glad about that."Capital" has been criticized for being too much like "Bonfire" and "Love Actually." I contend this seriously underestimates the enjoyment you will derive from this novel. Lanchester has a great eye for the London of 2008, cross-cutting among various social classes. I agree with the other reviewer here who says the book could have been titled "London" rather than "Capital." The reviewer who wrote about the two meanings of the word "capital" is also correct. This is a book not just about the major characters but also about a city and even a country. If you are balking about paying full Kindle price for this book, I advise getting over that. The writing and insights guarantee, in my opinion, that you will be getting great value for money..or maybe I should say "capital."

I typically hold back on giving anything five out of five stars, but this novel is a credit to modern literature. The author writes descriptively well and exhibits the ability to create distinctive characters from various professions, cultures and socio-economic backgrounds.The story itself revolves around people who live or work on/near Pepys--pronounced "peeps," I believe--Street in London, England. The neighborhood is an established yet recently tony region of the city. The novel begins in 2007, before the big financial crash. Some key players in the story are an investment banker and his wife, their nanny (Russian?), the Polish laborer doing work on the street, an African meter maid, an English cop, a Pakastani shopkeeping family, an African soccer player and an English avant-garde artist along with his relatives. Their stories all intertwine when the people of Pepys Street repeatedly receive postcards and DVDs that say "We want what you have." Great story with great characters.

For any company or executive that wishes to conduct business internationally and does not yet have a program in place to do this, The Culture Map should be required 101 reading, because otherwise you're just winging it. In fact, I will recommend it to all my clients when they grow international sales forces (just as it was recommended to me for that reason).The content is common sense, the framework is easy to grasp, and the author has collected years of anecdotal observations appropriate for widespread relevance. She's clear and diagnostic in her advice and communication. Solid credibility, expertise and content. Get the book, read the book, full stop.But.Two giant and important stars docked as an alert to potential buyers of the audio portion of the book, which I would rate a zero were there not a text version available. Stop reading now if you were only going to buy the text version.Three irredeemable strikes against the audio version undermine Ms. Meyer's excellent efforts:1) The voice. As a business professional, you expect an authoritative presentation, much as you would experience during a conference or training session. You do not expect to be "read to" like a child attending a library reading. Yet the sing-songy community-theatre performance sounds just like the latter. (In fact, would be great at voicing schoolbooks to bring education to life.) This kills any notion of serious executive authority.2) The presentation. Because the narrator is obviously not versed in the language of business (let that sit for a moment...) she presents topics that are fundamental and crisp enough in writing as overly pedantic and breathless epiphanies. If you come across this sentence in the middle of an everyday business book paragraph - "One crucial principle to remember is that communicating is not just about speaking but also listening." - in context, a reader can reasonably assume we've finished with discussing the speaking topic, and we're transitioning over to the listening topic. However, the narrator naively presents this like it's a knowledge bomb you've never heard before -- ARE YOU WRITING THIS DOWN?? -- making the topic level seem more elementary and basic than you thought.3) I've saved the most surprising - and most egregious - for last. I'm still kind of not believing it myself.During the numerous multi-cultural examples, the narrator acts out the quotes from various cultures like puppet-show skits... by using mildly offensive, badly-impersonated foreign dialects in fake-broken English. Think of every cartoon stereotype, and it's re-enacted in this audiobook. I can't even begin to put my head around how the decision was made in developing a "how to communicate professionally across international cultures" book that it's OK to categorically lump entire countries into an inexpert caricature of their languages. Hey, it's not me being overly sensitive: it's pointing out the irony of this conscious decision in an international communication handbook!Maybe in the finale (I am having trouble getting through it) the narrator will surprise us in the audience with the revelation that the audio performance was just a parable to teach one of the "practical strategies for handling cross-cultural missteps" that the book promises and otherwise delivers on.We are business readers and we expect business value, not a sugar-coated lesson from Mary Poppins. To be clear, Mary Poppins is the definitive darling and a greatly loved character - but not a business trainer. Please, please narrate this book yourself, just as you train and present and educate. Please tell me this was a V1. Please tell me it was a joke.

Really good for international relations. I work in a global role. I can't tell you the number of times I've had a German, an American, and a Chinese person all on the same call. The cultures are so different that the interactions can quickly go awry. The German will be the most abrupt, seeming to interrupt, being totally blunt, and not realizing he could offend. The Chinese will be the quietest, waiting to ask their turn to speak, sometimes having an underlying meaning behind the words that isn't blunt, and being very careful to not offend. The American will be in the middle. What could happen is that the Chinese person finds the German to be a rude, heartless boor. The German will think the Chinese person not forceful, not direct enough, and pussy-footing around. The reality is, we all have different cultural heritages which overlay our perceptions that we aren't fully aware of. Meyer has worked quite a bit internationally and has 8 attributes where the different cultures are put on various continuum. After reading this, I came away being more effective in my global interactions and have now led several discussions successfully. And of course, learning to be aware of my own cultural issues...

I found it insightful and helpful as I prepared to spend time studying abroad for my MA. I also believe this is a great resource for anyone in higher education. Having spent the last 11 years working at a University I see multiple applications to the diversity a college campus often fosters.Myers says, "The point here is that when examinging how people from different culture relate to one another, what matters is not the absolute position of either culture on the scale but rather the relative position of the two cultures. It is this relative positioning that determines how people view each other." In other words, you can't claim someone is a specific way without understanding the person you are describing them to more fully. For example, if I say "she is friendly" to both a very quiet person and to a vocal extrovert the expectations they develop may vary. One version of friendly might look very laid back and smiley, while the other looks more chatty and charismatic. I plan to use this resource for all levels of culture mapping both when abroad and on my home base.

I used this as a textbook for an undergraduate cross-cultural studies class in an international business management program. The book was relevant to the course for these students.The author gave multiple examples involving diverse countries from her own experience and qualitative research. The majority of the examples were European and US-based but also included several Asian cultures and a few examples from South and Central America. Very few examples were given from nations in Africa.What I appreciate most about Meyer's work was that each cultural approach was appropriate in its own setting. There are no "right" or "wrong" cultural practices. She highlights the difficulties encountered when one person or group works with another person or group that has different expectations. She provides strategies for managers working with multi-cultural teams and strategies for those working cross-culturally with a team from a culture different than their own.The author mentions several of Hofstede's dimensions and I supplemented the course with additional information from Hofstede's study.The visual diagrams were enlightening especially when comparing countries with multiple scales. As is usual when studying other cultures, the students had insights into their own cultural approaches.

I tried the Delia's toefl ibt and it was too easy.But the Cambridge is really good, the reading are hard and the listening too. The only problem is that it doesn't come with cd to practice listening. It brings only seven exams!

I have been teaching test preparation for the TOEFL forever. I have used paper-based, computer-based and now Internet-based. All using Cambridge. I feel it is the best ever. The CD has 7 complete practice tests ... more than any other TOEFL iBT prep book.

My daughter-in-Love is a dancer. She loves the book and will put it in her office.

I never knew a book like this existed. It is a great addition to my collection of African-American/Afro-Caribbean history.

This book purports to show us something new, but it doesn't. It has nice pictures, but nothing new in theory or new contributions in research. Glass makes several fundamental mistakes and approaches the subject matter as "Negro fetish" instead of the serious cultural document that this dance really is. It focuses heavily on the same type of approach that Lynne Emery uses and contributes nothing new there. As an outsider to the culture, Barbara Glass has never done any of the social dances and can not perform even one of them. She totally neglects the important role of cultural leadership and the resistance theme evident in much of the dance she describes but failed to recognize. This book would be great for high school students or the casual reader who want an elementary and simplistic accounting of "Black Dance." It holds nothing for the serious researcher and misses numerous opportunities to debunk the racist language of past ages instead Glass uses that same language uncritically.

I ordered a bunch of books from different sellers for my spring semester and this was the first to arrive. It was almost like new and I have no complaints.

This book offers an in-depth look into the history of African-American dance. I really enjoyed learning about how society, slavery, and the African heritage shaped the African American dance form. Highly recommended for those looking to learn more about African American culture and dance.
