The cover is incredibly intricate and beautiful. The pages are gold dipped but seem to be prone to flaking. It has a satin marker and many illustrations in color and black and white. Rene Bull's illustrations have a surreal, trippy, almost sci-fi feel, somewhat similar to Frank Frazetta. The Alfred W. Cooper ones are nice and more natural but do sort of clash with Bull's funky style. This book also contains story-specific headers, which is always convenient and drifting page numbers that follow a faint design from the top of the page at the beginning to the bottom by the end.It is worth noting that this translation was done by Sir Richard F. Burton (an interesting character) in 1884 and has a stylish but definitely dated vocabulary as would be expected, so if you cannot tolerate Thous and Quoths and Haths this is not the translation for you. Personally I enjoy the dated language because it gives the work a proper amount of foreigness from the present that enhances the stories' historical weight.It also might matter for some people that this is definitely a post-Islamic Arabic rendering/sourcing of these stories which most likely had diverse origins from all over Persia, India, and even China well before the birth of Islam. The effect of this is something like the Christian influence on texts such as Beowulf where the story isn't so much corrupted as obviously interspersed with overhanded religious injections and alterations that stand out against the core story quite obviously/oddly at times. The only other translation of these tales I have read contained zero Islamic references--whether that was intentional or based on their source material I cannot say.This excerpt from my other translation is far more consistent and fable-like:The porter, who had often heard people speak of the immense wealth of Sindbad, could not help feeling envious of one whose lot seemed to be as happy as his own was miserable."Consider, Mighty creator of all things, the differences between Sindbad's life and mine. Every day I suffer a thousand hardships and misfortunes, and have hard work to get even enough bad barley bread to keep myself and my family alive, while the lucky Sindbad spends money right and left and lives upon the fat of the land! What has he done that you should give him this pleasant life--what have I done to deserve so hard a fate?"Whereas the same section from Burton's seems completely over-the-top and ham-fistedly repetitious:So he raised his eyes heavenwards and said, "Glory to Thee, O Lord, O Creator and Provider, who providest whomso Thou wilt without count or stint! O mine Holy One, I cry Thee pardon for all sins and turn to Thee repenting of all offenses! O Lord there is no gainsaying Thee in Thine ordinance and in Thy dominion, neither wilt Thou be questioned of that Thou dost, for Thou indeed over all things art Almighty! Extolled be Thy perfection: whom Thou wilt Thou makest poor and whom Thou wilt Thou makest rich! Whom Thou wilt Thou exaltest and whom Thou wilt Thou abasest and there is no god but Thou! How mighty is Thy majesty and how enduring Thy dominion and how excellent Thy government! I venture not to railWhose ordinance is just and whose justice cannot fail."It seems to me that the entirety of the ridiculous 'Glory to Thee...' bit, and possibly the final two lines of the verse, were shoehorned in because they betray the narrative's clear message and read like speedbumps to the sense of the story. The core of the story is that a porter living a lowly life smells sweet smells and hears enchanting music and feels envious about the opulence of Sindbad's lifestyle, and further assumes that it was bitter fate or chance alone that led to their disparity in success. This simple theme is hijacked with incongruent religious outpouring that essentially attempts to eliminate or invalidate the porter's feeling of envy entirely and preemptively, because the editor seems to have confused the emotion of envy with a blasphemy against Allah's divine Will, and worked excessively to correct this 'error'. However, without the porter's commonplace envy and self-pity the narrative structure collapses, because it is precisely the porter's ignorant assumption and pining that Sindbad hadn't earned his wealth which prompts Sindbad to relate the tales of his voyages and the many hardships he endured. You cannot reconcile even a single aspect of the Sindbad opening if the lowly man understands, from the outset, that Allah's Will is perfect and that there is nothing to bemoan in the disparity between himself and Sindbad--it voids the logic of the entire narrative premise.

There are at least two different versions of this book with the same covers. One is the 2006 version the other is the 2016 version. The difference can be seen in a few different areas. The most noticeable is the inside cover art is much different as are is the illustrations inside. The 2006 version also has Arabic writing on the front and back cover. The 2016 replaces that writing with stylized loops and swirls. I guess for the 2016 version they wanted to avoid any controversy that having a book about Arabia with Arabic writing on the cover might cause. The big difference with the illustrations is the 2006 version has very risqué and what could be considered racist pictures, though totally accurate to the details in the story. The 2016 version has illustrations that different events in the book that are very tame and mostly unimportant to the plot. The editors really really changed the illustrations and it was clearly to be more PC despite the fact that this book is absolutely not PC. This book has very sexist, racist, and bigoted views of everyone not of high standing in the Arabic world of the time. The descriptions are very vivid and the pictures in the old version accurately depict what the text describes.The biggest difference is the addition and omission of different stories in each version. I originally received the 2016 version and had read almost half of it before accidentally water damaging the book to the point where it didn't shut all the way. So I ordered another copy and received the 2006 version. I immediately noticed the different illustrations and then noticed they have different stories in each. For the most part the text is exactly the same, word for word, page for page with the exception of the 7th voyage of Sinbad where the 2016 version adds three pages of an 8th voyage that wasn't really a voyage and did nothing to add to the story (so I'm not sure why that was added) and that finished with him calling it the 7th voyage (weird). There are about three different places where different stories were used.So I am currently reading the stories from the old version that weren't in the new version. The old version's alternate stories were better in my opinion, however they're all very engaging (once you get used to the racist, sexist, and bigoted storytelling of the time, region, and author.

Buyers BEWARE!!!, this is not the complete 1001 Arabian Nights, but only a few stories. To better appreciate this masterpiece of literature you need to read the whole thing. The complete version, also translated by Richerd Burton is a 16 volume edition. Yes 16 books just like this one, so you are missing a lot by buying this book, which is only a collectors piece.

The version I received does not have any illustrations at all. I was mistaken by looking at some of other reviews that had photos of the book showing pictures.

This is a worthless edition, because it includes none of Burton's footnotes. Not a single one! Huge disappointment. I relied on a 5-star comment above, which said the footnotes are printed on the bottom of each page, but obviously the reviewer is talking of a completely different edition.

Magnificent. The original with the footnotes added at the end. would rather they have been like footnotes at the bottom of the page. Not the edition to read to the kids unless you are a free thinker who wants to explain it all. Burton was not a PC personage and the stories are ribald.

Nice books as advertised; 5 stars for that! My one HUGE concern is with the inordinate amount of plastic wrap around each book, and then all three were wrapped excessively again. The cardboard box that they came in was filled with this stuff once unwrapped. I love my books, and will pay top dollar for them, and understand completely how people want them protected, BUT, one can use recycled paper to cushion these things and then the planet will be served better.

Baptist knows those distortions, and has done his part to clarify the historical record in The Half Has Never Been Told: Slavery and the Making of American Capitalism.The biggest takeaway is that the foundation of the US economy built on slavery. This can't be emphasized enough. Baptist writes that in 1832, "cotton made by enslaved people was driving US economic expansion. Almost all commercial production and consumption fed into or spun out from a mighty stream of white bolls. Politicians and entrepreneurs used the force of cotton's flood like a millrace to turn other wheels." Moving forward a few years, "more than $600 million, or almost half of the economic activity in the United States in 1836, derived directly or indirectly from cotton produced by the million-odd slaves . . . who in that year toiled in labor camps on slavery's frontier."In economics and in the United States's international standing, "Slavery's expansion was the driving force in US history between the framing of the Constitution and the beginning of the Civil War. It made the nation large and unified." And to those who say that slavery would have fizzled out eventually even without the Civil War, Baptist writes, "this is mere dogma. The evidence points in the opposite direction." Slavery was brutally efficient and expanding, and slave owners--and the nation--had every reason to continue the practice.The question for modern Americans is what, if anything, is to be done in response? Put simply, our nation and our economy were built upon theft. Our forebears stole labor and lives, and we all benefit from the economic structures they built. Even with the discrimination and racism that blacks still experience, they, too, benefit from the American system. Baptist's arguments could inform an argument for reparations, but I don't believe there is a way to measure who would get what and from what source they would be paid.As a side note, as someone who grew up in Texas and has felt the disparagement from northerners who believe they hold some sort of moral high ground on the question of slavery and racism, I would point out with Baptist that northerners are no less culpable than southerners. Both north and south benefitted from and enabled slavery. Northern banks loaned the money to enables southerners to buy slaves and land. Northern textile mills bought up the cotton produced by southern slaves. Aside from the very small number of abolitionists, no one in this system escapes guilt.Besides the economic argument Baptist lays out, he frames this history in the context of many slave narratives. He tells the larger story through the eyes of individual slaves and their experiences. Suffice it to say that any slave history that portrays slaves as happy workers who are considered part of the family of the plantation owners, with a few bad apples who whip a slave every now and then, has the story reversed. Doubtless there were some slaves who were treated well. But Baptist describes the brutality of the labor camps, the heartlessness of slave owners who split up families and ship slaves off, and the commodification of the slaves themselves. His accounts of the dehumanizing and demeaning ways slaves were treated will disabuse the reader of any notions of some idyllic workers' paradise.The story as Baptist tells it is powerfully condemning of the slave system--as if any of us need convincing. He demolishes any popular perception of slavery in the American South, especially in the cotton producing work camps, as some sort of benevolent employment. He demolishes any thought that slavery was a dying institution that would have disappeared, and that the Civil War was necessary. I know some historians may disagree with Baptist's conclusions. The content of the first 20-30 pages gave the impression that the book had been mistitled. Edward Baptist makes several strong arguments, some of which turn conventional wisdom on its head. Some of his arguments are difficult to read and go against our preferred versions of U.S.history.He details how American slavery was one of the most productive economic institutions in world history and how the expansion of slavery made the U.S. into a modern industrial empire. He details how slavery, by use of torture and terrorism, increased productivity and made the cotton industry the biggest, most sustained, expansion of the economy in human history.He makes the point that it wasn't just a Southern industry; indeed it benefitted the entire world -- from Northern banks, ship builders and industries that supported slavery (farm implements, whips, ropes, chains, etc) to the textile mills of Western Europe, especially Britain.And he makes a good argument that slavery would not have died if it hadn't been for the Civil War. Indeed, from the founding of the nation, slavery had grown for 70 years at a rate unprecedented in human history. There's no evidence to suggest that such a profitable and productive industry would have ever died out on its own accord. He shows that the cotton industry was never as productive again, after it lost it's use of the whip.Finally, he points out that the South brought about their own destruction. It was they that always pushed for more and more expansion of slavery (even contemplating taking over Cuba and all of Mexico!), which pushed Northerners into fearing for their own loss of political power. The Southern push for ever-growing slavery culminated in the creation of the new Republican Party, formed to not end slavery but to end it's expansion. The South then went to war in order to create its own government based on slavery. Thankfully, they were destroyed.It's a very well written book that not only makes his arguments with well researched historical documents. He also adds powerful voice to the millions of men, women and children who suffered under the bondage of slavery.

This book gives a personal view from a one time "prominent" publisher of the Watchtower Society. This book pre-dates Ray Franz book "Crisis of Conscience", written from early 20th century, shortly after the Jehovah's Witnesses were formed. The author describes the original true background of the Watchtower Society as a multi-million dollar publishing company. The only goal of the society was to push publications to make money. The author even describes the propaganda created by J. Rutherford during WWII that landed several Jehovah's Witnesses in jail/concentration camps unnecessarily under NAZI regime just to "prove" that so called true Christians were to be "tried and tested". This is a must-read for current JWs (even though I know the Governing Body instructs them to "stay away" from this type of material) as well as Ex-JWs as myself.

Overall, this book is a good historical record of the beginnings of the Jehovah's Witness religion. The author gives his true account of having been a Bible Student (the precursor group to Jehovah's Witnesses) for 30 years during the 1920's, 1930's, and 1940's. The author's family moved to Germany when he was 7 years old, as an adult he became a Bible Student, then returned to the US about 10 years after that. He talks about different brainwashing techniques, as well as techniques used to drive sincere Bible Students out the new Jehovah's Witness groups, and then when he returned to the US, he aided in implementing many of those same techniques in the Jehovah's Witness groups here. I learned a lot about the Jehovah's Witness groups that doesn't match their public image--i.e. while they give the impression of having great biblical knowledge, most Jehovah's Witnesses no very little about the Bible, except for a few proof texts they can quote. When I started the book, I was thinking the word "slave" to be an over dramatization, but indeed he recounts years spent working for the Watchtower while living in a dorm and receiving no pay. He also talks about how contrary to many people's beliefs that the Jehovah's Witnesses want to spread the good news of their gospel, the main tenant of the Jehovah's Witness religion is to sell books, pamphlets, and their Watchtower magazine, and that the members are required to keep records of the time they spend on this activity. He talks about how the Watchtower purposely would try to create controversy and get members arrested, to try to create sympathy for themselves, so that people would buy more books. Scarily he details how the Watchtower sees itself becomeing a supreme world power controlling everything. The author talks about how Jehovah's Witnesses live their life in a daze, knowing nothing except what the Watchtower tells them. He details their 6 step conversion plan to recruit new members, aka sellers of their material. At the end, the author talks about his conversion to Christianity, and the true freedom and love he has found. He also gives tips on what to say and what not to say, when talking with a Jehovah's Witness.Issues with the book, it was hard to follow at times. I'm not sure if this is because most of the formative years of the author were spent speaking German, or if writing just isn't his forte. Also, he left out many personal facts that would have made the story more real. For instance, near the end of the book we find out he has a wife, but in the book he never talked about dating, getting married, or whether he had any children. Given that JW's often refuse to have anything to do with a family member who left the faith, it would have been interesting to know how his family reacted to his leaving the faith. Also, this book detailing the author's experience nearly 70 years ago as a Jehovah's Witness is dated, and can only provide a historical reference.

First off I do NOT belong to any religion. I love to read nonfiction about people overcoming tribulations. But this author delves chapter after chapter into they said they didn't say as far as beliefs go.when he finally gets back to his story you will find he sold books WILLINGLY went where the watchtower organization sent him and NEVER complained. His definition of Slave is obviously not mine.

As a fading JW, I am interested in discovering the truth behind "the truth". Growing up in the JW, I was taught their history without proof or a foundation. I was also taught to not question or doubt what I was learning or told. This book gives the history behind the most important years of Jehovah's Witness. It has been white washed and sanitized by WTBTS. Now I get to know the other side...the unedited version.

Written from the perspective of someone that lived through WWI and saw the International Bible Students become the Jehovah's Witnesses while working at Bethel Headquarters and thereafter as a Zone Servant, this book provides a look back at a much earlier version of the Watchtower organization than many today are familiar with. Worth the read for many reasons. In my opinion, the 7 steps of indoctrination that begins when you accept Watchtower literature on your doorstep justifies reading the entire book.

Very informative. My daughter converted and I wanted to understand what she had gotten into, especially since it changed our family dynamics for holidays and birthdays.

I haven't finished this book yet that's the reason for the four star rating. I purchased this book because; 90% percent of my family are in the religion and will not stop trying to get me to join. Every time I see them they always bring up this topic and I'll talk to them but, polity say "I'm not interested. I have C.P. and they'll say such things like "Jehovah will take that away" (I'm paraphrasing) and I'll find the love of my life in the religion. Anyway, it all seems very shady to me and this book makes it clear why. You can clearly see it has a cult given the definition of a cult. They claim to be in the truth but, the organizations origins only go back to the 1870's (long after Christianity began). A Cult will rewrite christian doctrine to fit their beliefs and they have. I'm reading two different bible simultaneously theirs and King James. King James was published for the in 1611 and The new world Translation not until 1961. The New World Translation is published by the watchtower bible and tract society but, Jehovah's Wittness's don't think it is biased and yes they added Jehovah and changed somethings around to co inside with their beliefs. It says on their website that their tolerant of other religions and their not. I know why people get disfellowshiped. I bought this book because; I was interested to see why (If it's "the truth" why people voluntarily leave the faith) . The other thing one should consider is if JW''S are christian how can some one convert from JW's to Christianity? I think that anyone should read this before.committing "your life" to the organization.

Fun book for the kids! Includes traditional Jewish (although not necessarily biblical) aspects that we don't personally follow but short and sweet and fun to read to the kiddos. Keeping the Sabbath (Shabbat) is something we feel is worth upholding and teaching the kids that they are a part of it both in the preparation (Friday) and celebration (at sundown) is really important.

I ordered this book on a whim because I wanted something Jewish in the mix of my baby's board books, and I really love it. The rhymes and illustrations are cute without being too cutesy, and the things the family is doing to prepare for Shabbat are things families actually do (make dinner, get cleaned up, set the table). It is a lovely celebration of the anticipation of Friday night, and I would definitely recommend it to other Jewish families.

It's a cute book. We like to read it on Thursdays at bedtime so when the kids wake up on Friday they know that today is the day we prepare for Shabbat. I think we have read it enough times that we could all probably recite it without the book!

Purchased this wonderful book for my granddaughter. She is four years old and has already memorize the book. She tends to read this hours before Shabbat. I am so pleased to have made this purchase.

Cute book, decent rhymes. Way better than most Shabbat books I've seen.

Perfect for my 3 year old granddaughter. Shows excitement about the Shabbat, which is about what you want for a young child.
