Shabbat Is Coming!, by Tracy Newman

Review

"A Jewish family makes busy preparations as Shabbat (or Sabbath) approaches. The text consists of rhymed couplets describing the activities, all followed by the title line as refrain: 'Friday's here. / Jump and cheer. / Shabbat is coming.' A boy, a girl, their mother and father, one set of grandparents and a helpful family dog gather to complete such tasks as braiding challah dough, setting the table, tidying up and putting coins in a special bank. The final line announces that 'Shabbat is here!' as the family gathers at the dining-room table, where two candles, wine and challah adorn the table. Parents looking for a book to provide specialized Shabbat vocabulary will have to look elsewhere (for example, the challah bread and the practice of making tzedakah, donations for the needy, are not named or even labeled within the art). Despite this minor quibble, the bouncy verse and Garofoli's richly colored, slightly three-dimensional cartoons against canvas-textured background provide a compelling introduction to the weekly celebration. This playful depiction of a loving family gathering is a suitable introduction for observant families. (Board book. 1-4)" -- Kirkus Reviews--Journal"While most Shabbat books for young children highlight the holiday rituals and symbols - the candles, the wine, the challah - the simple, repetitive text in this board book focuses on the preparations before sunset: 'Friday's here. Jump and cheer. Shabbat is coming.' Braiding the challah, cooking, setting the table, cleaning up, bathing, and giving tzedakah (charity) is each given a page with a rhyming couplet and ending with the refrain, 'Shabbat is coming.' The culmination: 'With candles bright, we greet the night. Hurray! Shabbat is here!' The cheerful, textured illustrations depict a contemporary family, with Dad wearing an apron to bake the challah and cook the soup, and Grandma and Grandpa joining the family for Shabbat dinner. All in all, Shabbat is Coming! is a nice addition to board book collections in Jewish settings." -- AJL--Magazine

Fun book for the kids! Includes traditional Jewish (although not necessarily biblical) aspects that we don't personally follow but short and sweet and fun to read to the kiddos. Keeping the Sabbath (Shabbat) is something we feel is worth upholding and teaching the kids that they are a part of it both in the preparation (Friday) and celebration (at sundown) is really important.

I ordered this book on a whim because I wanted something Jewish in the mix of my baby's board books, and I really love it. The rhymes and illustrations are cute without being too cutesy, and the things the family is doing to prepare for Shabbat are things families actually do (make dinner, get cleaned up, set the table). It is a lovely celebration of the anticipation of Friday night, and I would definitely recommend it to other Jewish families.

It's a cute book. We like to read it on Thursdays at bedtime so when the kids wake up on Friday they know that today is the day we prepare for Shabbat. I think we have read it enough times that we could all probably recite it without the book!

Purchased this wonderful book for my granddaughter. She is four years old and has already memorize the book. She tends to read this hours before Shabbat. I am so pleased to have made this purchase.

Cute book, decent rhymes. Way better than most Shabbat books I've seen.

Preschool story time

Perfect for my 3 year old granddaughter. Shows excitement about the Shabbat, which is about what you want for a young child.

I enjoyed it, and I hope my grandson will also.

I got this book today from Amazon, and proceeded to read it obsessively in one sitting interrupted only by dinner. What a great book! My hearty congratulations to Meghan McCarthy McPhaul (that's a lot of Mc's for one name) on a really superb, well-done book. A History of Cannon Mountain does a remarkable job of conveying the spirit, atmosphere, and joy of what Cannon Mountain is for those of us fortunate to have skied, hiked, or otherwise recreated there. As someone who has skied Cannon continuously since 1978, I have to say that it was a lot of fun to read the history that I knew, and the history that I didn't know. And there is a lot of history worth knowing. Cannon has always been regarded as a special place, and to this day it still retains very special qualities that you won't find at other ski areas. Aside from the remarkable setting, with the imposing Mt. Lafayette range across the notch, there is a lot at Cannon that is unique. And the author successfully captures that and conveys it. She is a great writer, and she obviously knows (and loves) her subject.I've read other books of this sort and most are nowhere near as good. If you are even a little bit interested in Cannon Mountain and its history--and even if you haven't skied there, its history is well worth knowing--then this is a book you will want to read. And the collection of pictures in the book is especially great too, they tell a significant part of the story. I really enjoyed this book, and I'm sure I will be reading it again. This book comes out at a time when Cannon is being threatened by foolish, short-sighted state legislators in NH who want to sell off--oh excuse me, "lease" or "privatize"--the crown jewel of the NH State Park system. In order to save a few measly dollars, they want to leave it to the private sector to rape and pillage Cannon Mountain, which will destroy the essence of what makes this place so special. The question that needs to be asked is, what kind of legacy do we want to leave to our children and grandchildren? Do we want to leave them an intact and beautiful State Park that is lovingly cared for by long-term employees who to a person see themselves as stewards in a long line of citizens protecting our common heritage, or do we want to instead leave our children and grandchildren the beauty of condos as far as the eye can see, crass commercialism, and perhaps even a "charming" and "quaint" village built at the base of the ski area, where the elite can go purchase the latest ski fashions from Europe, get facials, and then after dinner the whole family can go to the IMAX theater to watch a film about bears and other wildlife that used to live in the park and on Cannon Mountain. Is this what we want? The reason why we have government is to protect the common good. This book does a wonderful job of explaining what the common good is in this situation. I hope that NH finds the wisdom and courage to do what's right for all of us, rather than in the excuse of "budget cuts" giving to the few that which rightfully belongs to all of us.

excellent

It is more then a book about a ski area... it's about the History of skiing, Franconia Notch, the tram, Mittersille and people who made skiing in the New England..I don't regret reading it...

can't wait to readscanned and looks great

Parents of children who are affected by autism spectrum disorders are well aware of the need to serve as effective advocates for the rights of their children. Imagine the battle that needs to be waged when an entire government fights to withhold funding for the only empirically validated intervention for autism, applied behavior analysis (ABA). Freeman describes the events that occur when a lawsuit is brought about by a group of parents against the government of British Columbia. The lawsuit argues for funding for "Lovaas-style" ABA therapy. In an attempt to block the funding of ABA therapy, the government of British Columbia attempts to discredit Lovaas and ABA through a combination of distortions, selective reporting of the research literature, and questionable ethical practices. In part one, Freeman outlines the specific strategies used against the parents' lawsuit while explaining why the government of B.C. is outright incorrect in its assertions against ABA and Lovaas. In the second part of the book, Freeman provides dialogue between the lawyers and witnesses (from actual court records) that depict these arguments and counter-arguments. Happily, the British Columbia Supreme Court ruled in favor of the parents by declaring that early intensive behavioral intervention (EIBI) is a "medically necessary" treatment for autism and that the B.C. government was in violation of the constitutional rights of the children by not providing funding for this treatment. The court also ruled that the case against Lovaas therapy was biased. Unfortunately, the book concludes by pointing out that the government of B.C. appealed the court's ruling and has still not implemented the funding of Lovaas-style ABA. This book is a must read for anyone involved in the lives of someone affected by an autism spectrum disorder. It should also be on the reading list of all legal advocates who work in the field of developmental disabilities. Freeman gives us a wonderful guide for effectively arguing against those who would refute the validity of ABA as a science and as an empirically validated educational intervention. "Science For Sale" is a wonderful "candle in the dark" in the field of autism treatment.

Another essential read from Sabrina Freeman. Any parent or advocate fighting for the necessary treatment for people with autistic-spectrum disorders must get a copy of this book. It is frightening to see how easily the science can be misquoted and misused in the effort by some to avoiding paying for scientifically-validated treatment. When you have to prepare yourself for the fight, this a resource you must have.

Who Belongs Here?: An American Story (2nd Edition), by Margy Burns Knight Anne Sibley O'Brien

Review

“A new introduction traces the waves of immigration that have built America and celebrates the Muslim and Latino immigrants who are today contributing to America’s future. The book’s new cover shows a group of kids―sons and daughters of newly arrived immigrants―taking their oath of citizenship. This story is more timely now than ever. Long an anchor text for school units on immigration and tolerance, Who Belongs Here? is now renewed in look and content. Teaching compassion for recent immigrants while sharing the important contributions made by immigrants of the past, this story is more relevant now than ever. In this probing, plain-spoken book, based on a true story, Margy Burns Knight and Anne Sibley O’Brien, author and illustrator of the acclaimed “Talking Walls,” invite young readers to explore the human implications of intolerance. Anecdotes relating the experiences of other refugees and their contributions to American culture play counterpoint to Nary’s tale, all enlivened by O’Brien’s full-color pastels. A compendium at the end of the book offers more detailed information about Pol Pot, Ellis Island, and other topics in this text. Who Belongs Here? will lead to discussions about the effects of war on children and families, refugees and relocation processes in the U.S. ” - I'm Your Neighbor“Following their well-received Talking Walls , Knight and O'Brien again team up for an affectionate if didactic exploration of connections among people world-wide. This time the message is filtered through the experience of Nary, a Cambodian refugee who immigrates to the U.S. with his grandmother after the death of both parents. Hostility toward immigrants and the impetus to work for change are explored. The central question, "What if everyone . . . whose ancestors came from another country was forced to return to his or her homeland? . . . Who would be left?" signals the book's design as a vehicle for discussion. The text itself pairs Nary's story with italicized information on immigration to the U.S. This strategy is only intermittently effective; younger readers may not be capable of making the conceptual jumps both Knight and O'Brien require, while older readers may chafe at the picture-book format. These limitations notwithstanding, the volume provides strong starting points for ongoing explorations of multicultural themes. Ages 7-13.” - Publishers Weekly“Grade 3-5-Drawing on her experience as an ESL teacher, Knight introduces the fictional character Nary, a 10-year-old boy from Cambodia. Accompanying his story of leaving his homeland and settling in this country is a parallel text, set in italics, that expands some of the ideas presented. Sometimes it provides background information on U.S. immigration or history; at other times it serves to stimulate discussion, particularly on such topics as intolerance and prejudice. Notes in the back give additional material on individuals (Pol Pot, Dith Pran, Dolores Huerta) and concepts introduced earlier. Three-quarters of each double-page spread is covered with brightly colored, impressionistic pastel illustrations. Unfortunately, the texts do not blend well. Nary's story is choppy; the italicized portions are often superficial and not always relevant. For information strictly on Cambodian immigrants, consult Nancy Graff's Where the River Runs (Little, 1993).Diane S. Marton, Arlington County Library, VA Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.” - Diane S. Marton, Arlington County Library, VA, School Library Journal“Gr. 4-7. After escaping the killing fields of Cambodia and living in a refugee camp in Thailand, 10-year-old Nary (a composite character drawn from students that Knight has known as an ESL teacher) is now adjusting to his new home in the U.S. The amount of food in the grocery stores amazes him, and he likes eating pizza and ice cream. But sometimes his classmates are mean to him, calling him names and telling him to "get back on the boat and go home where you belong." In counterpoint to Nary's story, Knight includes information about other refugees and their contributions to the U.S. and challenges readers to confront difficult questions about immigration, racism, and multiculturalism: "What if everyone who now lives in the U.S., but whose ancestors came from another country, was forced to return to his or her homeland?" This book is similar to the author and illustrator's other collaborative effort, Talking Walls (1992), in that Knight's text compassionately explores the complex issues and O'Brien's full-color pastel illustrations personalize the experiences of Nary and other new Americans. An attractive and telling picture book that provokes a dynamic dialogue about one of the most fundamental questions before our country. Annie Ayers” - Annie Ayers, Booklist

Product received as advertised would do business with seller again, Thanks

It's true, as asserted in the one-star review, that this book is not subtle about its 'message', although how that's a criticism I don't quite see. This book is overtly pro-tolerance, promoting universal qualities such as empathy. Its message is especially relevant in the current political climate. If the book was 'out of touch' when that one star review was written, then what comes around does indeed go around, as that review is wildly out of touch with the principles that have guided the US in being a sanctuary for people fleeing death and poverty in their own countries. Criticism of the message of this book is no different than support for the very reasons why Nary has to flee to America in the first place-- the rise of the brutal Communist regime the Khmer Rouge. Nixon and Kissinger bombed the Cambodian countryside for four years, killing an estimated 150,000 Cambodian civilians-- in itself this should have been enough to earn both of them dates with the hangman's noose as war criminals-- and forcing so many Khmer peasant farmers to seek help or protection from someone, anyone, and in their case, it was the Khmer Rouge. The US did not form this monster, but they fed it and then, in classic US foreign policy fashion, when it was clear they could not win they just jumped ship. They then agree to accept some of the tens of thousands of people their policies have turned into refugees, but fail to make the kind of tolerance and empathy espoused in this book a requirement in its educational system. Hence, the students who call Nary names.

Nary, a young refugee from Cambodia, is the subject of the book Who Belongs Here? Through narrative and illustrations, the story of Nary's escape from the Khmer Rouge and his resettlement, first in a Thai refugee camp and later in New York City, is told. Accompanying each part of the story is a running commentary on both how and why people immigrate to the United States. This story deals sensitively with the difficulties Nary faces and with the joy he experiences upon being accepted in his new community. This book would work well for young children, who might focus on Nary's story, and with older children, who may use Nary's experience as a way to study immigration history and the process of immigration.

This book would work as a great discussion stimulator with older elementary school children. The fictional story of Nary, a young Cambodian refugee, is mixed with facts about immigration, citizenship, and other cultures. Young students may not be able to make the jump required to connect the story with the facts with the illustrations, but older students should not have a problem with this. The overall effect, though, is of disconnectedness. This won't be a book read for its story, though the story is an important one with themes teachers may want to use in their classrooms like immigration, multiculturalism, racism, tolerance, and refugees.

This 20+ yr old book is out of date and out of touch. It is irresponsible to use children to perpetuate bias. This is a narrowly focused book that is less than subtle about its messages.

Scientific American's Cocktail Party Physics blog“It's clear, insightful, and designed for those hardcore physics fans who've read all the popular treatments and now might be interested in moving out of the armchair into the real action of actually engaging in theoretical physics.”Science Blogs: Built on Facts“[A] charming and erudite instance of a genre with very few members – a pop-physics book with partial differential equations on a good fraction of the pages…. More impressive still is that the book entirely resists the temptation to skip to the good stuff – quantum mechanics and so on. This is a book which is purely about classical mechanics…. [S]ucceeds admirably in its goal. It presents classical mechanics in all its glory, from forces to Hamiltonians to symmetry and conservation laws, in a casual but detailed style.”Physics World“Very readable. Abstract concepts are well explained….[The Theoretical Minimum] provide[s] a clear description of advanced classical physics concepts, and gives readers who want a challenge the opportunity to exercise their brain in new ways.”Wall Street Journal, Best Books of 2013“Every minute of our lives is now dependent on technology, yet the wonders of basic science are foreign to many of us. Everyone who remembers even a bit of math should read this inviting and accessible account of ‘what you need to know to start doing physics.'”Wall Street Journal“So what do you do if you enjoyed science at school or college but ended up with a different career and are still wondering what makes the universe tick?.... Leonard Susskind and George Hrabovsky's The Theoretical Minimum is the book for you. In this neat little book the authors aim to provide the minimum amount of knowledge you need about classical physics…to gain some real understanding of the world…. They do so with great success…. Along the way you get beautifully clear explanations of famously ‘difficult' things like differential and integral calculus, conservation laws and what physicists mean by symmetries…. Messrs. Susskind and Hrabovsky's book is a powerful exposition of why science is ‘real' and a counter to the kind of wishful thinking employed by people who, for whatever reason, reject the scientific worldview.”Physics Today“A pleasure to read….a beautiful, high-level overview of the entire subject.”

Beautiful book. Worst typesetting I have seen in a kindle book in a long time, and I am reading it on my computer after thinking it was just my device. The equations are clip art (you can see the tops or bottoms of text below it) because the typesetters can't use latex. Excuseable, but the worst part is the inline equations have this much space between each letter. Returning it half way read so I can buy a paper copy. Sad!

This "The Theoretical Minimum" series is one of a kind. It bills itself as text book for the self learner. Unlike a dumbed down popular science book this is the real deal - seeks to explain the world via mathematics, in the same manner a physicist does. But unlike a text book it doesn't teach by repetition and exercises. Nor does it assume you have taken the appropriate pre-requisite maths course.Instead it takes you step by step through the whole through whole box and dice. Don't know calculus or maybe you've forgotten your trig identities? Don't worry - it's covered in the just enough depth to understand what follows. It's done without jargon and in a very readable tone, with the more difficult topics covered from several angles so you have a hope of gaining the insight needed from one of them. And it's done with the insight and understand of a man who is not only of the the leading experts in his field, he's also been teaching it for years. Given the topic it isn't easy going. Trying to get my head around things that weren't covered in high school physics when I did it is a struggle - like why the Lagrangian could possibly work. But it is possible, and with the pleasant tone of the book even pleasant. In this day and age where one could potentially teach yourself in our newly connected world, this is the only series of books I've come across that delivers on the promise. For now it is one of a kind. Now Susskind has shown how it is done I hope we will see more.

This 220 page 6 x 8.5 little text is packed with valuable nuggets, and does NOT shy away from advanced math. This book is based on the popular Stanford, online and YouTube "adult ed" lectures and is targeted at scientists and "amateurs" who missed physics in undergrad but are still interested.NOT a "popular" physics book with a bunch of fluffy, non substantial speculation about membranes, stings, fractals, superpositioned states and multiple universes! Has real, tough, solid content with a LOT of advanced formulas, including tensors and many partial derivatives. You CAN "get" these with supplemental study, but the pace of the 11 lectures included is fast enough to leave you behind very quickly if you're rusty in math.I teach ordinary differential equations to non engineers at classpros dot com, including Psychologists interested in the latest progress in nonlinear dynamical systems as applied to neurons, behavior, etc. This book is a real GEM as an intro to those topics, without "dumbing down" the content for a "lay" audience. If you love reading populist texts on quantum physics, etc. this wonderful book will take you all the way from classic upwards, with the requisite math, and will provide a great foundation for really getting what's going on in the more advanced areas. Unfortunately, the math will scare lots of folks off, but please, don't be one of them! The 11 lectures included are: 1. Classical Physics, 2. Motion, 3. Dynamics, 4. Multiple Particle Systems, 5. Energy, 6. Least Action Principle, 7. Symmetries and Conservation, 8. Hamiltonian Mechanics, 9. Phase Space Fluid and Gibbs-Liouville, 10. Poisson Brackets, Angular Momentum, Symmetries, 11. Electric and Magnetic Forces. There also is an appendix on Central Forces and Planetary Orbits and "math interludes" on Trig, Vectors, Integrals and PDE's. NOTE that only classical mechanics are covered here, HOWEVER circular motion and momentum are covered, and if you've seen the "Feynman" approach to QED (QED: The Strange Theory of Light and Matter), you know that even advanced Physics grad students were astonished that Richard was able to use "clock metaphors" and circular momentum to explain Quantum math and mechanics that normally take a grad student 3 years to master!Nothing is covered in a LOT of depth, for example there's little on computational complexity, but the theory of information conservation is touched on briefly as the "most fundamental of all physical laws" -- the cyclic "memory" of where we start and end!The REALLY COOL thing is that the authors don't talk down to us, they assume that just as "amateurs" can discover new stars in Astronomy, non-college types can also make great new contributions in Physics! No fooling, no tongue in cheek. Seems like a revolutionary view from Stanford types, but perhaps they've seen the future of distributed, non-brick and mortar education for real! At under 20 bucks this is a MUST HAVE even for HS students in my humble opinion. GREAT GIFT for a bright grandchild for their 18th birthday as well! This is such an original math refresher too, that I'm guessing a lot of folks will also use it to brush up on applied math. By page 60 we're already at differential equations-- so hang on to your saddle!Library Picks reviews always buys the books we review and has nothing to do with authors, publishers or Amazon, our focus is exclusively on the ROI of Amazon buyers.

The rating above does not apply to the content of the book but rather to the presentation. The substance so far is very good but I'm not sure that whoever is responsible for the digital edition of this book actually bothered to review it before posting it for sale. Regardless of whether the reader is using an iPad, a Kindle, or a computer to read this volume they will require a magnifying glass to read the formulae as the font appears to be either 5 or 6 point size. The typesetting generally leaves much to be desired with large gaps in the text spacing that exist for no fathomable reason. After almost 1000 purchases I have never returned a digital book to Amazon but am seriously considering it with this one.The publisher - Basic Books - should be panned for this effort. Amusingly, the back of the title page states that the book was typeset using Mathematica. I have Mathematica and I've never seen the application produce such poor renditions of formulae. If there was an option to acquire the volume in an nb file format (Mathematica's notebook format) at least I could read it on my computer!

Ebook version is totally unreadable on an actual Kindle. There are mathematical formulas everywhere and they are completely illegible with no way to zoom in that I can find.It does look great on my PC and is almost readable on a Fire 10" tablet, so if that's your thing then you're probably safe.Would prefer to have gotten a refund on my purchase, but missed the seven day window by a couple of days. No comment on the actual book, except that what I did manage to read looked very informative.

This work covers the basics in a manner that makes it easy to move on to more advanced topics. For those of us who had more "practical" introductions to Physics it is very enlightening. It should be of interest to anyone who was introduced to the subject a few decades ago. It does require a level of mathematics that puts it out of the reach of most casual readers, but as the authors point out, there are many people with technical backgrounds who will benefit from this approach.

The poor rating I am providing here is related to the print quality of the paperback version (and not the book contents). The book is well organized and covers most of the important topics related to fiber optics; however, it's almost impossible to read more than a couple of pages without eye fatigue and headache. There are many technical books on the market that are offered in both paperback and hardcover versions, where you don't really notice a big difference in print quality. A basic quality control would have convinced the author to not offer this version in its current form.Another important note: be aware that the author has offered this 2015 edition as a reprint of the 2005 version. In other words, the book content has not been updated based on the latest advances in fiber optics. This can be misleading to the reader, especially if someone is looking for a more recent publication.

Fast delivery, and affordable price. But the print quality is very poor. Recommend buying hard-cover version.

Quite helpful

I have used the various editions with my students - physics and engineering majors in a medium-size non-Ph. D. university - for many years. There isn't really enough mathematical analysis for this purpose, and even the current (5th) edition is falling behind some of the technology and could use an update chapter. That's the downside from my specific perspective. I'm sure that many of the book's readers will prefer the lack of equations and their detailed derivations. What I like is the excellent organization and writing, and abundant diagrams that are very well done. The comprehensive coverage is also very helpful, especially for future reference, and the low price means students don't have to sell it used. My experience is that students who learn about this field often get jobs in it, so having a quick reference on almost anything they might encounter is valuable, and the content is more reliable and complete than anything I've found on the web, or in any other non-mathematical book. Also, the options are VERY few. Most of the true undergraduate textbooks (there were lots from around 1998 to 2005 or) on fiber optics are even older (there were lots from around 1998 to 2005 or so), and some are out of print or have exorbitant prices. None of them were ever ideal. A few had numerous content or typesetting errors. In some, the text was good, but there were too few, or poor graphics. There are some strong texts appropriate for graduate students, but if they lack a knowledge of partial differential equations and in particular Bessel functions, students will probably get lost.
