If you are interested in graphic design and more specifically in its history, this book is (still) the bible. I teach History of Graphic Design to postgrad students and Meggs' book is the basis of my course I know for a fact that this is also true for most of my colleagues. This book initiated the tradition that graphic design history should start with the invention of writing and a history of typography. Only the second part deals with "real" graphic design (after 1900). Nevertheless, one should keep in mind that this book was written from an American/English point of view. I would recommend you supplement this great book with books dealing specifically with French, German or Russian graphic design. Not that Meggs fails to deal with these subjects, but other authors might make you get a more balanced, more European picture.

Highly recommended to any Design lovers to learn about the origins of Graphic design. I had to rent this updated edition, but I already have the 4th one which is slightly different. I love this complete book full of illustrations and very useful if you have a lack of inspiration. Yes we never cease to reinvent and re-adapt, re-adjust, re-create, but in a new context and with different tools to communicate visually, colorfully, concisely and intelligibly to different, but multicultural audiences all over the world. Yes, It does means we still have creativity! This book is really a good example of great design from the very beginning to the latest years of GD. Very interesting and a must to understand the most important concepts. Great!!!!

Yeah, the digital copy of Meggs' History of Graphic Design might save you a few bucks. But honestly if you can get a hold of the book, do it. There was a conscious decision made to remove the images from the text; they are linked within it and you can scroll through them separately, you cannot immediately see any of the images as they are being written about and navigating back and forth is a pain. Overall it was poorly organized and every student in my class who bought this edition agreed that taking the images out of the text was confusing and impeded both speed of reading and memorizing the images.

I needed this for a class, so I didn't have a choice to buy this or not. This was not for leisure reading. However, I will definitely not be selling this to another student! I like the way everything is written; it's very down to earth and easy to understand. If you're looking for a specific person or time period, it's very easy to locate that. This is the first history book I've found that made sense when divided into chapters; everything else I've read (for school or leisure) was disorganized and confusing. I'll be keeping this for future reference. There are a lot of pictures of the artifacts they are talking about, and lots of good information. The book came in excellent condition with no bends, rips, or fraying. The cover is actually a dust jacket, the actual book is white.

The book is nicely printed and feels nice to read. All the pictures are high quality, as is the paper. It's a lot more sleek than a lot of text books I've owned.my only complaint is that your fingerprints just get EVERYWHERE. The paper (especially the black paper) tends to show fingerprints no matter what you do, and when you're holding the book to read it, it ends up making your nice pristine pages look kinda gross. But eh, I only got this for a class. It's just not great for the next person that'll have it.

Huge book. I rented it, so I was not able to use the code in the back to get access to more digital content. I kind of wish I had bought it so I didn't have to worry so much about highlighting and had access to digital content. Ton of information, most of it really good stuff but sometimes it really felt like the writers were gushing about the artists/designers and not being completely objective. At times, the writing is also very vague about why exactly something or someone was significant.

This book is a must have if you are taking any graphic design courses. If you are already a graphic designer this book is also a must have. My class is long over and I wont sell this book, that says something considering I am a starving student, well maybe not starving.I bought this for a class and I ended up reading it just because the information presented is both interesting and also very digestible to the average reader. It is a very interesting book that you can keep long after the class is over. One thing is it makes a fantastic coffee table book. It would not be out of place in the lobby of your design firm.Content (+)The content of this book covers from our earliest designs all the way to modern design and the impact it has on our lives. The content of this book does not shy away from the controversial to the mundane.Images (+)I made the video clip so you could see the great artwork in this book. Many full color images are wonderful references that can be used when you are designing. "Good artists copy, great artists steal", Pablo PicassoText (+)As I was saying this is not just boring text droning on and on. It, in fact is very interesting to those that are into graphic design or art. Any art is graphic design, and all graphic design is art. You really get that feeling after reading this book.Overall this book is a great value at what I paid for it which is twice what it cost now. Get this BRAND NEW and you will have this book for many years.

It was meh. Still waiting for a comprehensive and complex history of design book to hit the market. We used this as a textbook for a class at a very smart institution and almost everyone found the readings very scattered and shallow. Trash..

this is turning out to be a very enjoyable series. the one caveat is that the coincidence and inter related connections with one or the other of the leading characters still permeates the series... and it really isn't a necessary element. The characters are interesting enough without this added element and sometimes it seems to just be a device to bring hem strongly into the mystery at hand. It is just not necessary to tie the main characters into every mystery like this. they are detectives...not partners in the same force, but related forces... one state police and one FBI...and could be drawn into the story line in other ways... but no... it has to be because it happens to them or to someone related to them... and this is a crutch that you see often in comic book relationships...such as the leader of one super group turns out to be the long lost father of a character in the main superdoop group... it's just not necessary for the story line or the interaction between the different elements of the story. This is my main problem with what would otherwise be a very enjoyable series. I am reading the third book in the series now and , once again, this connection thing pops up ... so it would seem to be a plot device the author simply cannot do without. I hope sh grows out of it.

In this second book in a series, FBI Agent Ava McLane and Oregon State Police detective Mason Callahan are living together, more or less. Ava hasn't sold her home but she's leaning that way. Both of them fit together like they were made for each other. Mason is a little concerned about their age difference and Ava is still plagued by her irresponsible drug addict of a sister. But both are happier than they can ever remember being. This time they both get called in on the death of a congressman. He was found hanging from a bridge. Ava and Mason are busy investigating when two more men are found hanging from bridges. With thoughts of a serial killer, the press is clamoring for details. Ava, Mason and the Task Force are trying to find something that connects these seemingly very different men. And, somehow, Ava's sister Jayne is caught up in the case since her current, shady boyfriend seems to be on the killer's radar. The story is very suspenseful. I also liked the relationship that Ava and Mason are building. Sections from the killer's point of view add an extra creepiness to the story too. Fans of romantic suspense will enjoy this story.

This is an excellent plot peopled by interesting characters in believable situations that demand the reader's full attention. Believe me, reading does not get much better than that! This plot could easily come from a current television program or perhaps the daily newspaper. The beginning of the work sells the deal! Elliot catches the reader with the presentation of an unbelievable situation in a most intimate manner. Honestly, I felt myself truly hearing the character's labored breathing. As the subsequent copycat crimes unfolded the intimacy was always there. The two detectives and their intimate relationship added an element of warmth and believability to the entire plot. When introduced to the perpetrator, I felt the squeamish touch, labored breathing, and even his soul's pain. The interwoven facts of the case with the way it is unfolded kept me reading long into the night. If you love a good mystery, this is it. I highly recommend.

Kendra is a great writer. She has a way of engaging the reader quickly without being predictable. Personally, I greatly enjoy serial character books that have an easy flow from one book to the other without being too redundant in rehashing what happened in prior books. In the rare occasion I skip a book, Ms. Scott also doesn't write spoilers that take the fun out of reading the skipped book. (Although I encourage you to read them in order!) She develops plots that are interesting and complex enough to keep me interested. The chemistry between McLane and Callahan is interesting without being sappy or explicit. And the dynamic between the McLane twins provides a good experience of unpredictable psychological drama. And I look forward to more development of the sidekick partners of Ray and Lander. Great Writer, great read, great series!

My suggestion to fans of Kendra Elliott is to read "Vanished" (Callahan & McLane Book 1) first because jumping into their relationship as it matures misses much of the important detail about how it came to be as it was formed. The personalities of Callahan and separately McLane are intense, well delineated, filled with anticipation and hope as they work through their dramas as driven by a new and thrilling case. To understand the depth of the characters that are brought forward in this sequel, it is helpful to understand not just their own situations but those that surround them and those are founded in "Vanished" (Book 1). Many of us in our lives know that tension, stress with intensity from threatening circumstances can make or break trust and emotion. Kendra Elliott brings all of that to a fine and intense point in "Bridged" making the conclusion a "can't put it down" page turner!

Ms. Elliot has a unique style: she manages to tie the agents into the stories. In this one, Ava becomes a part of the story, much to Mason's ire. This plot device shows the depth of their love.I'm not a big fan of how Ms. Elliot writes the "romantic" part of the book(s); they're too scripted, too stiff. I've often thought how much better her books would be without that element in them, but I do like the love these two characters have for each other.

"The Shell Game" is a nice companion to "Mind Over Water" and "The Amateurs." Where "Mind Over Water" deals with single sculling, "The Shell Game" recounts Stephen Kiesling's personal history of rowing in eights, focusing especially on the Yale-Harvard race, the Henley Royal Regatta, and the preparations and selection camp for the national team for the ill-fated 1980 Olympic Games. Along with "The Amateurs," "The Shell Game" and "Mind Over Water" seem to make up a perfect trio of personal odysseys in the sport of rowing. Of the three, "The Amateurs" is certainly the best written (after all, David Halberstam, need one say more?), but "The Shell Game" and "Mind Over Water" let you peek directly into the minds and hearts of devotees of this weirdly fanatical sport.Focused on three specific events as it is, "The Shell Game" provides a look into a rarefied world of rowing races, from the hidebound tradition of Henley to the grueling trials at the U.S. Olympic selection camp, from the etiquette of international racing to the mechanics of testing athletes to determine not only their racing abilities but even their rate of oxygen exchange. As with any memoir, there are those who will find the more personal passages a tad cloying, but overall it's a delightful book. Kiesling provides a particularly nice chapter ("The Set") on the tragic dichotomy of the physical and the intellectual that began in ancient Greece and still haunts us today. If ever there were an argument for their reunification, this would surely be one of the best. Definitely a keeper for future re-reading.

If you're new to crew and want a book that will inspire and educate you start here! Great Book, I've given at least 5 of them away as gifts. Great for the young rower just getting started.

Even if you aren't a rower, this book definitely gives you a glimpse into what joining a college crew team is like and the dedication needed to commit fully to this amazing sport.

Well written, funny, and engrossing. Of course, it doesn't hurt that I'm a rowing fanatic and love just about everything written on the sport. But honestly, this book is one of the best.

Being gay and having dated one of the Yale male heavyweight rowers in the late 70s, all I can say is this book is as accurate - and pretentious - as Stephen Kiesling is/was(?) good-looking.

I read this book several times in the early 1980's, after my own (undistinguished) rowing career had come to an end. Given that I'm writing this in early 2016, you will forgive me if my memory isn't up to recalling enough details to properly evaluate the book as a whole. At the time, I was thrilled just to have ANY book written about rowing, and one that trafficked in Olympic aspirations could do no wrong. So even back in the day, I'd have been rather obsequious with any criticism of this book. That said, the story of how John Terwilliger came to make the 1979 US National rowing team is itself worth the price of the book (even if you never read the rest of it). It can provide inspiration for anybody, even those who've never picked up an oar, and deserves to be become legend far beyond American boathouses. I don't think it's hyperbole to call it Campbellian (as in Joseph) in it's capacity to convey perseverance in a mythic structure (even though the story is in fact true!).

Kiesling describes his first days of rowing nearly exactly as every collegiate rower experienced them. He then guides the reader through success and failure while rowing at one of the greatest rowing powerhouses of all time, Yale. The feelings of animosity in a low-profile sport were clear yet the pride in being part of such a great sport was more than evident. This is a great place to start for every young rower or someone just curious about the world of rowing.

A fantastic book for teens starting to row. I related better to it than the amateurs.
