The Liar's Child: A Novel, by Carla Buckley

Review

“You should read The Liar’s Child by Carla Buckley because it’s a lovely and evocative story, and because it raises all kinds of questions about parents and children, secrets and safety. But be careful: This is a writer who knows how to break your heart.”—Carolyn Parkhurst, New York Times bestselling author of The Dogs of Babel and Lost and Found “Buckley has a rare gift for character. In The Liar’s Child, she digs deep into the hearts of the troubled, flawed, and all-too-human souls who populate this beautifully written and utterly involving novel. I didn’t so much open this book as fall inside this compelling story.” —Lisa Unger, New York Times bestselling author of Under My Skin   “Buckley is a sly writer. Just when you think you have things figured out, she flips the story on its head. Deft plotting and psychologically fleshed out characters make The Liar’s Child a ripping good read.”—Diane Chamberlain, New York Times bestselling author of The Dream Daughter  “Buckley’s provocative novel may be set against an exciting outer storm, but it’s the complex inner storms of her nuanced characters that had me gripping the pages.”—Caroline Leavitt, New York Times bestselling author of Is This Tomorrow and Pictures of You   “Told in Buckley’s trademark evocative prose, The Liar’s Child spotlights her singular gift: the ability to tug on the threads of her characters’ lives and make everything unravel, and then expertly stitch their lives back together again.” —Karen Dionne, author of the international bestseller The Marsh King’s Daughter   “Her characters are believably flawed; her creation of atmosphere and setting is perfection. I adored this beautifully written book, and I double-dog dare you to not find yourself wanting to read from start to finish without a break.”—Elizabeth J. Church, author of All the Beautiful Girls and The Atomic Weight of Love “A mystery wrapped in an achingly good family drama, The Liar’s Child hooked me from page one. An unconventional love story that broke my heart in all the best ways, Carla Buckley’s emotionally complex, beautifully written tale is also a page-turner that will keep you up long past your bedtime.”—Joshilyn Jackson, New York Times bestselling author of The Almost Sisters

On the outskirts of North Carolina’s Outer Banks sits the Paradise, an apartment complex where renters never stay long enough to call the place “home”—and neighbors are seldom neighborly. It’s ideal for Sara Lennox, who moved there to escape a complicated past—and even her name—and rebuild a new life for herself under the radar. But Sara cannot help but notice the family next door, especially twelve-year-old Cassie and five-year-old Boon. She hears rumors and whispers of a recent tragedy slowly tearing them apart. When a raging storm threatens then slams the coastal community, Sara makes a quick, bold decision: Rescue Cassie and Boon from the storm and their broken home—without telling a soul. But this seemingly noble act is not without consequences. Some lethal. My Thoughts: The characters we meet in The Liar’s Child seemingly have no connection to one another, beginning with Hank, the retired cop who is a watcher. He fancies himself a protector, having suffered unimaginable losses.Cassie, a preteen girl living in a dreary apartment, protects herself with defiance, dark clothes, and heavy makeup. She acts as if her little brother Boon is an annoyance, but she is his fierce guardian. The two of them know early on that they can’t really trust people.Whit, father to the kids, has a dark secret. But he is trying to hold everything together for his kids. Then there is Sara…or whoever she really is. She is in a witness program, but she is marking the days until she can escape the FBI scrutiny. We learn through her internal monologues that lying is a big part of her persona, and she is good at it. But it’s a lonely life. So…when the hurricane strikes and she puts her own destiny at risk to rescue Cassie and Boon, she learns that sometimes even liars can find their inner nurturer.I loved watching them all struggle: Sara, Cassie, Boon, Whit, and even Hank. At the end, the story jumped ahead in time, and we caught a glimpse of a promising future. 5 stars.

Loved this book! Fast paced and engaging. I read it in one setting. Highly recommend.

Yay! I've discovered another North Carolina writer I like. This book is chock-full of liars because not only is the "liar's child" a liar, so is everyone else in this book it seems. They are all lying to each other. Makes it difficult to find the truth. There are two storylines here. One is Sara who is placed in an apartment at the Outer Banks of North Carolina by the witness protection program. She is supposed to testify against a criminal to keep from going to prison herself. The other story involves Sara's neighbors - a mother, father, and two children. The wife disappears shortly after leaving her son in a hot car while she went to work. The father is struggling to take care of the kids and work to make a living. The two stories really come together during a hurricane. The story kept my attention and I enjoyed it. There were a few surprises. I felt sorry for the two children, Boon and Cassie who were caught up in a horrible situation. I liked the writing style and the pace of the plot. Thanks to Carla Buckly and Ballantine Books through Netgalley for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed the beginning of this book. Hank had depth and Sara and Whit left a breadcrumb of questions that I was interested in learning the answers to. However, as the novel progressed the pace slowed to a crawl for me. Sara wasn't making any bold moves and the family drama, while sad, didn't draw me in.None of the characters won me over. I felt bad for both Boon and Whit, but I didn't feel close enough to either of them to become too attached. For me, I think that was the biggest problem, I was apathetic toward all of the characters. I didn't hate them, but I didn't love them either. I didn't feel the heart of the family. As for Sara, she wasn't as deeply interested in Cassie and Boon as I thought she'd be, nor were there any lethal consequences for rescuing them. Hank ended up not really making sense as a narrator as he had so little contact with the family.Big or important events are also only mentioned, rather than letting us experience them. This caused some confusion when switching narrators. For a minute or two I was confused on what was going on in the story before I got reoriented. In one instance it was a real shame because had we experienced it as it happened I think it would have made Sara's connection to Boon make more sense and been more interesting. The twists could be seen a mile away.I can't recommend this book to anyone but those who may enjoy a family drama with shallowly developed main characters.I received a review copy.

One cannot call themselves educated or well-read without having been exposed to the many versions of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. What makes this book unique are the great black and white illustrations along with the story. As mentioned previously, there are several versions of this story. This volume by Howard Pyle, is the original traditional version. The story begins with the great King Uther-Pendragon, who had defeated all his enemies and became the overlord of all England. His advisor was the great prophet Merlin, the wise. Merlin advised the King to hide his new born son, Arthur, because of the many plots against the King. Arthur was hidden by Merlin by having Sir Ector of Bonmaison, raise Arthur. When Arthur was eighteen years old, he drew out a magical sword from a large stone, which Merlin created to prove that Arthur was indeed the real King of England. The rest of the story revolves around creating the Knights of the Round Table, and his love of Queen Guinevere. This is a story about courage, love, betrayal, magic, jealousy, good and evil.In conlusion, this is one of the important classics that every educated person needs to read and understand. Indeed, it is a story about the many twists and turns, happy times and tragic times we all experience in living with other human beings.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Predator Hunter: A warrior's memoir)

Be aware, the 2016 hardcover version and the paperback 2008 version you see in the "look inside" are not the same books. My son fell in love with the older version we got at the library so much that we decided to order it. What came was a choppy comic book version lacking the rich story telling and the beautiful illustrations of the one we wanted. THESE ARE NOT THE SAME BOOKS! It's very deceiving to show one book and send something completely different. You have a very disappointed 5 year old on your hands.

Pyle's text and illustrations are true classics. This version is a deplorable rendition of it. The text appears to have been computer scanned with optical character recognition. Portions of the illustrations are mixed in with the text. Multiple nonsense sentences are thus produced on each page, and the illustrations lack titles or annotations. This version is nearly unreadable as a result.

I have been teaching for quite awhile now. In my important job, I was surprised to learn how many boys, now teenagers, had not read about King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. So, I took it upon myself to start sharing this book with them. What a world it opened up! Soon after, they rented First Night, and have enjoyed that version of the story, too. Teach the Classics, parents and friends! They need to know these fantastic stories.

I purchased this book because my 4 year old son is very interested in knights. I read this book to him, and my three year old daughter, a couple pages at a time and they loved it. The book is well written and I like that it does not dumb down the language. I had to explain what a couple words meant here and there but for the most part they understood. This turned or to be a great purchase.

This is a medium size story book for kids with black and while illustrations the inking of which reminds me of the Marvel comic style. The book has 21 chapters that cover the basic Arthurian saga. There are numerous pictures.Color would have had a dramatic impact, but I like B&W movies as well. I think B&W is better suited to 1940's Warner Brothers and 1960's French movies.

Obviously a great read, it really tells the Truth of human nature. But, unfortunately, it's kind of a disposable book - I would be willing to pay more for a fine-quality collector volume, something leather-clad and built for the long haul, a truly permanent book. It's really considered a child's book, so what you're going to find there is CHEAP, Too bad!

Good for an eight or nine year old (or older, depending on the child). My grandson loved reading it himself, but if you were reading it to your eight year old you might want to consider Pyle's version which this is Not. I thought it was. But it's a version of Pyle's version.

This is a great book for children. Your child can be exposed to the King Arthur legends in simpler language than the original books. You can either read these aloud as bedtime stories or have your second through fourth grader read them on their own.
