From the Inside Flap

Young Fitz is the bastard son of the noble Prince Chivalry, raised in the shadow of the royal court by his father's gruff stableman. He is treated like an outcast by all the royalty except the devious King Shrewd, who has him sectetly tutored in the arts of the assassin. For in Fitz's blood runs the magic Skill--and the darker knowledge of a child raised with the stable hounds and rejected by his family. As barbarous raiders ravage the coasts, Fitz is growing to manhood. Soon he will face his first dangerous, soul-shattering mission. I read on the average of about 125-150 books a year. Most of them in the fantasy genre. I'm a 48 - year-old woman, so I've put away tons of books in my time. This fantasy series is in my top 3 most enjoyable and engaging epic fantasy reads of all time. The characters of Fitzchivalry and The Fool are easily some of the most memorable characters of the fantasy genre, ever. As a woman, you may find yourself in love with both - maybe not romantically - but they get in your head and won't leave. Extremely well-written, well-plotted, suspenseful-yet-pleasant, not all doom-and-gloom but plenty of crises that get resolved in satisfying, creatively written fashion. You'll find yourself wanting to be a part of this unique, and masterfully developed world. Robin Hobb is a wordsmith extraordinaire, in my humble opinion. Prepare yourself, because once you've dug into this first book, you will read the rest voraciously and find yourself feeling bereft when you've run out of books to read that are set in this particular fantasy world. They're all FANTASTIC.

Boy, if I had known that I would lose sleep, call in sick from work, cancel plans with friends and family, and miss appointments all from this book being so good, I think I wouldn't have bought it.Who am I kidding, of course I would have.An exemplary book, filled with memorable, three dimensional characters with an incredible story set in a well imagined world, similar to our own in many ways and yet so different. The main character is very much stuck in his own head, but that's not a bad thing for the reader. It's a pleasure reading his thoughts and feelings about being trapped in a place he'll never truly belong, wielding two powers he doesn't understand. One power others understand and refuse to teach to the public, one power no one understands and people are burned to death for using it.Really, really incredible book and not at all what you might expect from the title or the cover. You owe it to yourself to read this book.

This book started a mild obsession for me. Since reading it, I have devoured the remainder of the series, plus three other series by Ms. Hobb. I am an avid reader of many types of novel, but these have quickly risen to some of my favorites. The character development is not incredibly speedy, but has massive depth. It is not often that a book brings me to genuine tears, or makes me laugh out loud - but these novels do. Some reviewers have said they found the stories slow or tedious - I disagree. The character development is so masterfully done, and the world so vividly brought to life that it sometimes takes my breath away.

There are a number of things about Robin Hobbs writing style that usually drive me away from an author but after giving this book a chance I found myself mesmerized. At first I found her to be verbose, there's not a lot of action, there were characters that did things that seemed to defy logic and a story line that was almost cryptic. But where I would usually just put a book that contained those traits down and move on to something else I found myself being drawn in and hooked by the beauty and poise she filled the pages with. Others have described the story and main characters better than I could so I'll just say give Farseer Trilogy a chance and approach it with a little more patience than you might normally assign a doorstop Fantasy story. I felt enormously rewarded and just ordered the second Fitz & the Fool series, The Tawny Man trilogy.

The Assassin's Apprentice... a more accurate title would have been "The Bastard Steward" or maybe "The Boy that No Job Fitz".The root of the problem is that the title gives the impression the story is about a world of murder and a hero (or anti-hero) that must navigate its perils. The thing is Fitz is not really an assassin and may never be one. As many duties and opportunities pull him in, he barely has any time to train for his apprenticeship. Seriously, Fitz spends more time learning about the care of horses than murdering or fighting. More telling is the fact that his temperament is a terrible choice for a job (when it actually starts) that requires cold blooded killing without justification or remorse. Fitz, on the other hand, is an empathic, introspective, and wounded soul that desperately seeks both emotional connection and a higher purpose. It's an interesting dilemma for sure, but I'm not sure it's intentional.Aside from the issue of poor job placement for the protagonist, there is very little action. To be blunt, the book is slow. When there is a bit of violence, it is glossed over quickly and in little detail. For example, Fitz's first (human) murder is recalled by him passively and with absolutely no tension or drama. In regards to mortal combat, he has exactly one stand up fight I can remember. All he has to wield at the time is a stick, as if the author wanted to avoid any bloodshed. I suppose it's just not the author's strength or intent to explore violence, but it takes the edge from what could have been high adrenaline events. As readers, we already know these are past experiences recalled by an aged Fitz. Spice things up, don't water down the action even further! The final straw for me that makes further reading of this series unlikely is the awfully written antagonist. Without giving away any real spoilers, this person is just so one-dimensional and obviously a problem. And yet, no one does anything about it. I mean, the main character is supposed to be an idealistic assassin dealing out death to those who pose a threat to king and kingdom. In many areas, Fitz shows good initiative and intuition in defiance of others. Not here, and we as readers are forced to endure this cartoon villain for... three books?!I will say that I really enjoyed the author's main character development and ability to communicate the turmoil of emotions and moral dilemmas Fitz faced. And she really heaped it on the poor boy - he endures heartbreak after heartbreak in a “safe space” free world. It definitely allowed the author to show off her writing strengths. Fitz's inner journey through his trials and his emotionally charged interactions with others are truly well written. Also, as main characters go he is neither mediocre (he's naturally intelligent, emotionally resilient, strong willed, and gifted with certain... powers) nor overpowered (that would have been his near perfect father or the precog albino called Fool). It's a great balance, and avoids the story pitfalls of either extreme.Fitz really is the best thing about the book with great growth potential - a gem in the rough. If what I said about him resonates with you then this book is definitely worth the price. If not, then it’s sure to be a tough but worthy read.

I've enjoyed some classics in this genre such as Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage and Arctic Adventure: My Life in the Frozen North (which is a lessor known but great account of life in the Arctic). So I was interested in The Last Viking. The Last Viking is a well-crafted work on both the life and achievements of Roald Amundsen, one of history's greatest explorers. Among Amundsen's headline accomplishments were that he was the first European to sail the Northwest Passage, the first person to see the North Pole, and the first human to reach the South Pole. The Norwegian press called him "The Last Viking."While author Stephen R. Bown is clearly taken with Amundsen's life and heroics, he doesn't shy away from showing us his warts too. Bown gives us a 21st century look at Amundsen, a man characterized by intense determination and passion, but with a stubbornness and inability to express feelings that could be infuriating; a man who was capable of great charm, but also great arrogance. But when it came to exploration, Amundsen had the humility to learn from the Intuit who, unlike most Europeans of his day, he considered his cultural equal. Bown does a fine job chronicling the details and historical context of Amundsen's adventures. Through these details, we get entertaining accounts of the travels and travails of the Last Viking. Armchair explorers will be pleased as there is plenty of good adventure, such as plane crashes and maulings by polar bears.

Roald Amundsen was the greatest explorer of his time and, his biographer convincingly argues, possibly of any time. Best remembered as the discoverer of the South Pole, he was also the first person to study the magnetic North Pole, the first to sail the Northwest Passage, the first person to reach the North Pole, the first to use airplanes and airships in arctic exploration, and more. At times the most famous person in the world, the book uses Amundsen's fame as a venue for studying celebrity culture and the way celebrity itself becomes a career: book tours, paid speeches, taking tactical mutual advantage of the press, fundraising. "The Last Viking" also delves into the relationship between exploration and nationalism, and in discussing Amundsen's famous "race to the pole" with Scott (which wasn't a race at all), points out that Amundsen succeeded partly because of his admiration for and willingness to learn from native arctic cultures like the Inuit, while Scott, as an English gentleman, thought he could learn nothing from native peoples. Scott died in Antarctica because of his poor planning, but also, the author argues, because he carried the weight of the British Empire on his shoulders. Named by many organizations as one of the best books of 2012, “The Last Viking” is deeply researched, thoughtful, informative, entertaining, and often exciting. It is an outstanding biography.

I'm thrilled to have found this book as I'm doing research on Amundsen for a lecture I'll be presenting to about 100 people aboard two eco-tourism trips this winter to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula.I've been reading several different books but this is the one I've chosen to take with me for reference. It's my 9th year as a kayak guide and lecturer in Antarctica and I've found in general our passengers get a bit overwhelmed with stories and lectures about Shackleton and Scott so I believe this will satisfy and/or open new territory and understanding. It piqued my interest as well, both my parents were Norwegian, born about the time of Amundsen's passing. I believe not only was he a great leader but possessed keen insight into people's characters, created good working teams and, through a number of positive factors, achieved great things. One has to admire his tireless and impeccable preparations, he never lost a man on any of his expeditions due to careful planning and execution of gear (furs), food (fresh meat) and methods of travel (skis and dog sledges).I choose not to compare his South Pole exploration with Scott's too much, I'd found myself growing weary of others' scathing critiques.I've chosen instead to stick only to Amundsen's story, it's so compelling and stands very well on its own.I've found this book enlightening and refreshing in that the author has stuck with his main character and not fallen into the comparison trap.Amundsen's story is detailed with enough of his own research we know he'd done his homework. To do anything less might spell disaster, which others had suffered. As you've said there had to be more behind the man than his stoic public persona, the image he fed to the world. The private image can generally be more interesting than the public one, as this book shows.

There are books I hate to end, and books I can’t wait to finish. This biography of Weegee the Famous, the groundbreaking press photographer turned charicature, belongs in a special category — books I thought I’d never finish. Not because the writing is bad. It’s not. But because the subject becomes so dissolute that you just want it to end. Weegee made the rules, then distorted and rewrote them, and finally just succumbed to his own press releases. Uplifting and sad at the same time. I could put it down ... but didn’t.

A lot of good photos by Weegee in this volume and a well-researched book on his life and career, and snapshot ofd the news industry of the era

Great book!!

I bought this book as a gift for my husband who is an acid photographer. He 8nreoduced me to Weegee’s photography’s many years ago. Bottom line, my husband enjoyed the book a lot...i

Very well written, even though the city has changed into gated community, one can still go to the places that are mentioned in the book ,such as diners across from the old police hq. The book filled in much about Weegee's life. So true that the myth created are him alive.Excellent book!

As a New Yorker that's seen and heard just about every classic New York Story, Christopher Bonanos's "FLASH: The Making of WEEGEE THE FAMOUS" is as fresh and charming a story as I've read in years. It's actually amazing there hasn't already been a biography written about one of the most iconic and eccentric news photographers of the golden age of newspapers. Mr. Bonanos clearly has done extensive research into the man and his passion for telling the visual stories of countless New Yorkers with a million stories to tell. The writing is witty, informed and confident. I particularly appreciated the background on what was happening in NYC politically, economically, socially through Prohibition, the Great Depression and beyond, all the while WEEGEE (Arthur Fellig) was making an international name for himself navigating the red tape and fierce competition in the world of journalism. "FLASH: The Making of WEEGEE THE FAMOUS" would make a fantastic film. Kudos!

I got this for my husband for Christmas. He was thrilled. It arrived in plenty of time and just how pictured. Thank you.

When I read a biography I want the text to read like a photograph. Nothing more between the edges of the image, nothing more between me and what is important about the subject. The author wrote too wordy and too much of a story about a shy, lonely, nightcrawler. Mr Fellig‘s autobiography is much closer to the edges of his own life.Mr. Squeegee was an immigrant boy who took what he learned from the mean streets of New York and pointed his camera at it. He invented the saying, “ƒ/8 and be there.“I would hand this book to any young person wanting to be something or anything. It was a perfect time to have been Weegee: it was a time for Flash.

We have a 19 month old foster child who is African American so I tried to buy a lot of board books featuring African Americans. This is by far her favorite book. She asks us to read it to her over and over again. I'm not sure if she likes the repeating rhythm of the "Baby, Baby, Please, Baby,," or maybe because it features a mother kissing her child goodnight and she misses her mom. My husband read this to her many times before he finally noticed it was written by Spike Lee. The artwork is beautiful and simple and features activities babies normally do. Our foster child likes to point at the ball and say "ball" and point at the baby's head and say "head." This book is a winner for sure.

My 19 month old son's favorite book! He loves to read, and he requests "Baby, Baby" (as he calls it) multiple times per day! My husband fell in love with the illustrations, and I love the rhythm of the book, and that the vocabulary was perfect for learning toddlers! We own both the paperback (which we received as a gift) and the board book. The paperback's illustrations are larger and more vibrant (so I prefer this version), but we ordered the board book for durability.

I first purchased this book about four years ago when my daughter was about 2 years old and it was a huge hit with my kid! Now I'm a stepmom to my guy's 2-year-old who is very active like the child in the story, maybe more so... Needless to say, the book is a huge hit for her, too, and my 6-year-old likes to listen in when I read to the 2-year-old! It brings back great memories for my older girl and sparks a sense of familiarity for my younger girl since she does ALL of the same things as the adorable protagonist!Additionally there are just enough words to hold the attention of a toddler and the illustrations are perfect for a brief discussion of each scene. "Do you think it's okay to put your soiled diaper in the toy box? No... Where should we put our soiled pull-ups? That's right - in the trash can!!"The pictures are also great for developing the skill to identify things. "Can you find the banana among all the bubbles? Can you find the puppy on this page? Look at this baby's cute, curls! Do you have curly hair?"I can't say enough great things about this book! I am not at all a fan of Spike's films, but I do love his children's books!!

This is my 2nd time purchasing a copy of this board book. For some reason they just get really well-loved. Both love the repetition of the lines. My oldest (now 7), damaged the spine after much handling when she was little so it had to be tossed. My youngest, now 15 months, was a nibbler and chewed on a lot of her books, including this one (I think I'll save it this time just to show her years from now, as in "look what you did to your favorite book!")I bought this board book as well as 'I Like Myself' by Karen Beaumont, 'Girl of Mine' by Jabari Asim, and 'I Can Do It Too' by Karen Baicker (all are available in board-book format and starring brown girl characters) for her 1st Christmas back in December 2017.

When I first read this book I didn't like it. There's some rhyming but there's a lot of "please baby" seemed like a ridiculous amount at first. But babies (my baby at least) needs a lot of repetition. So after reading it again I noticed that baby tries to say please and baby. She can only say dada so that was huge for me. I also love that the child in this book is a curly haired brown one. That's the reason I bought this book. A board book is where all the pages are hard like the cover from the hardcover books. It's funny to see the baby try to put her diaper in the trash too. I really like this book.

We are on another generation in my household loving this book. First my 8-year-old and now my granddaughter. I love this book and brought it again when we lost it. Now my daughter brought it for her daughter after she was caught trying to smuggle it from our home. Great book and I love the illustrations! Kadir Nelson is one of my favorites.

We received this book as a gift and when my child lost it we immediately replaced it! Great for ages 1-6years old. A perfect gift at age 1 as it grows with the child. My girls love the photos and repetition of words. I love the repetition of the word please. It was one of the first books that my child learned to ready with because of the repetitive nature. Great for younger kids too as her little sister always gravitates to it. I love that the artistry illustrates minority kids and also focuses on tough tantrum moments like leaving the playground, eating peas, not splashing in the tub, etc. it also has funny toddler moments like throwing a diaper in the playroom that the girls always go crazy over even though we’ve been reading this book for years.

This little girl is a real kid, with attitude and character. She's a cutie who doesn't make things super easy for the people around her. She's so refreshing! The illustrations are vivid. The book is entertaining, and so, so needed in a genre full of animals and white kids.
