Very helpful. I did a 8-day backpacking trip in the Northern Winds in Aug 2017 and this book was very helpful for planning the trip. It's a bit bulky to carry on a multi-day trip so I photocopied the key pages. It is well written with interesting general background about the range, and it has very comprehensive coverage of the peaks. I am not a technical climber so can't comment on that aspect, although it has lots of route descriptions for technical routes. I'm a scrambler - fine on class III and ok with a bit of class IV - whose goal is to reach the high summits, and for this it is ideal. The descriptions of the trails, passes and summit routes were clear and (in my experience) accurate without being excessively detailed. It does not include topo maps (I used Larson/Earthwalk Press) but it does have trail maps of each area, which are helpful for getting an overview and planning approach routes. Similar in spirit to Secor's guide to the Sierras, but with nice color photos. Highly recommended.

I have used this guide book for the last 30 to 40 years. I lost my copy so this is why I purchased this one. I'm a 71 year old man and will no longer be climbing in the Wind's but will still backpack to the Cirque of the Towers this Summer and take in the scenery and do a little trout fishing. The book lets you fill in the adventure and do the discovering on your own. If you need to know every turn on every trail this guide book is not for you bot for the adventurer in you I highly advise it. TomP

In fall 1994, I flew from Cincinnati to Salt Lake City on one leg of a business trip return flight. The flight went farther north than expected, but toward the end it had to head SW toward Salt Lake. I had a window seat and realized I would be flying over the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming! I knew of them, but had never seen them before. I looked down and in a few minutes they appeared ... towering peaks, shining lakes, and glaciers. I knew then that I had to plan a backpack trip to them. Later, upon looking at maps, I realized I had flown right over the high peaks portion of the Wind Rivers ... Gannett Peak, Fremont Peak, Titcomb Basin ... followed by Fremont Lake at the base of the range.When I got home, I looked for Wind River guidebooks and Joe Kelsey's "Climbing and Hiking in the Wind River Mountains, 2nd Edition" was the best. I immediately purchased it and started planning. I made three separate backpack trips to the Wind River Mountains with the help of the book. I have been in areas from Titcomb Basin in the north to Cirque of the Towers in the south. I am a scrambler (nothing over Class 3), but for the hiking part and the scrambling part, the book was excellent.When I saw that this 3rd edition was available, I purchased copies for myself and friends and can see that it is still the same excellent (and expanded/improved) guidebook. It reminds me that I need to get back to the Wind River Mountains again. Besides all the information, the photos (many with climbing routes shown) are beautiful.One thing that Mr. Kelsey does well (that other guidebooks usually don't do) is have a subsection in each section that describes the mountain passes/cols and off-trail routes in sufficient detail, whether they are well known/designated passes or lesser known passes/cols and off-trail routes. I specifically benefited from his descriptions of Pass 11,120+ (Island Lake to Wall Lake; page 182 in the new 3rd edition), Monument Creek Route (Monument Creek to Pole Creek; page 208), and Pass 11,640+ (East Fork Valley to Bonneville Lake; page 257) ... I used all these passes/routes in my trips to the Wind Rivers and the descriptions (in the 2nd edition I used then ... and expanded in the new 3rd edition) saved valuable time/effort.I corresponded by letter with Mr. Kelsey in 1999 and I can see that he incorporates such discussion in future work. For example, on page 157 in the new 3rd edition, he expanded the Knapsack Col discussion, saying that one should bring along an ice ax for the Twins Glacier side of Knapsack Col (this was a subject in our 1999 correspondence).Anyone who loves backpacking and/or climbing has to experience the Wind River Mountains ... and they need the new 3rd edition of this guidebook.

Lots of good info if your planing a trip to the Winds

Excellent book, and definitive for this region. I'm especially pleased that the author was able to correct an error about a "Wolf's Head" climb that had slipped into the second edition.

This has great route information - very detailed. However, it really is more of a climbing/scrambling guide. If you really want hiking trail info, go with the falcon Wind Rivers hiking book.

Great, interesting read. A good addition to any book shelf. As Kelsey says in the intro, this book is NOT a detailed guidebook in terms of technical route descriptions. It is very vague when describing descent options, belay locations, routes or pretty much anything. For anyone considering going to the winds for the first time, this book is great to get a general layout of the area and an idea for a new adventure, but should not be relied upon if you don't know the area or have experience climbing/hiking there.I can see the appeal of keeping the ethics in the winds and the sense of adventure, but lots of confusing/conflicting/misleading and missing information in this book. Just a heads up.For the cirque, "cirque of the towers and deep lake" by Bechtel is a much better choice because it is more detailed and reliable.

Gene Nunnery gives his experiences growing up in the turkey woods and relays a vast knowledge of anecdotal, factual, incredible and sometimes comical information about the almost lost love of TRUE turkey hunting in the old fashion manner in which there is a one-on-one, man vs. gobbler hunt. The essence of turkey hunting in the old-fashioned and "real" manner is promoted by Mr. Nunnery and by the time the reader is finished and hunts in this manner, he (or she) is willing to give up ALL the devices and gimmicks of "new fangled" hunting for the awesome experiences of hunting the old pro turkey hunter way. Once a true turkey hunter returns to hunting the way of our forfathers did, you can never go back: the experience pales in comparisson and the hunt is never quite the same with all the "stuff" of the new age turkey hunter. Get this book, read it and give it a try. The reader will have opened up to them the way that turkey hunting truly should always have been and should be. You will leave the "stuff" at home and enjoy the hunt as never before. The history and anecdotes alone are worth whatever price you have to pay. You will not be dissapointed!

Lots of great information and procedures! I loved how specific he was and actual scenarios for each tip. Some tips I just couldn’t see being used in Kindergarten, but otherwise these tips are great in all grade levels. This book has helped me turn around a class that I took over mid year. I have been dealing with many behaviors, but this has really helped to turn it around for my littles!

Amazing! This is a phenomenal man who has done fantastic things with kids. His book seems like common sense but it gives you real life applications and you'd be amazed how many of our young people (including adults) do not know common courtesy and manners. This is a must read if you are in any way in contact with children!

Love this book!! I've had several copies, but I always loan it out to other teachers or to student teachers and always forget to get it back. I have another student teacher this year and wanted her to read it, so I gave this one to her the day it came in! - This is a must read for ALL teachers - old and new!

This is an excellent book by a world class teacher, one who has found a way to connect with his pupils and no is capable of admitting his mistakes. Then shows what he has learned from them !As someone who works with teenagers at risk in a disadvantaged inner city area I have found his ideas and principles both very interesting and helpful.It's not often we get to look inside the mind of a genius !

Ron Clark is a genius, & I have absolutely drank the kool-aid. These "essential 55" rules & ideas to have an effective classroom life & teach students to become great kids AND citizens, are completely true & absolutely work when applied. I'm very thankful that Ron Clark took the time to write out what he felt was important so that other educators could learn from his success. If you haven't read this book yet, please do!

Met Ron Clark a few months ago. He is an inspirational educator. I practice most of these rules in my classroom. Reading the book made me feel validated in my approach.

This book is filled with useful information. Ron Clark is an amazing man. His ideas are great and really work.

It chronicles the growth and operations of this parastatal, extractive enterprise and industrial behemoth.The state of Arabia in the first decades of the 20th century, was so poor and under developed that the King of Saudi Arabia’s wealth and that of the realm, was kept in gold coins, cash, and other precious metals. It all fitted into chests that Finance Minister Sulaiman reportedly stored in his family home. These funds were needed to be distributed among the king’s subjects in politically expedient ways so as to ensure the continued loyalty from nomadic and settled tribesmen.What is today Saudi Aramco, started as a Saudi Arabian concession to drill for oil, granted to an American company under the name ‘Arabian American Company’ – Aramco.It began as a huge gamble. Previous geological surveys for signs of petroleum deposits in the Arabian Peninsula were disappointing but not conclusively negative. Oil had already been discovered in Iran in the early 1900s by the later named BP, and later in small quantities in Bahrain.The Saudi king at the time was so sceptical that oil would be found, that he asked the engineers and geologists who would be surveying the concession area, to let him know if they found any underground water cisterns that could be useful to his people.Several years and $10 million later revealed nothing of commercial value. In 1938, the team in Arabia decided to deepen one of the ‘dry’ wells by another two hundred feet, and found oil. By 1940, about 20,000 barrels of oil per day were being produced and the company had begun building housing and offices in Dhahran on the west coast of Saudi Arabia.With the end of World War II, the demand for petrol remained as high as during the war. Not only was Western Europe rebuilding its devastated cities, but the American military presence around the world necessitated consistently available petroleum products. Aramco increased oil production to over 200,000 barrels per day in 1947.The economics of oil had to be managed. If oil prices spiralled upward quickly, it could damage the economies into which the oil needed to be sold. At the same time, the luxuries of modernity were needed and wanted by Saudi royalty for themselves, and for the country. The oil finds were superbly managed so they produced vast amounts of money for the company, and the Saudi treasury.Over time, the kingdom was able to leverage its assets to obtain the best from around the world, in a wide variety of domestic developments and enterprises. This wealth enabled Saudi Arabia to spend lavishly and quickly on its building programme - the development of modern cities, airports, hotels, universities and other amenities, that catapulted large parts of the country into modernity.What Saudi Arabia realized it did have, was an immense quantity of a very desirable resource: petroleum. What it lacked, was the many resources needed to get the most out of this oil wealth. Perhaps the most obvious lesson to any country was this realization: they needed to buy what they did not have from the outside, and then to make it their own. And this theme runs through their modern economic history.For the royal family, it meant sending princes abroad for education at the finest Western institutions like Princeton and Oxford. For Aramco, it initially meant encouraging Saudi workers to accept training as welders, carpenters, machine repairmen, and general workers. Later, it entailed sending promising young Saudis abroad to university to learn geology, petroleum engineering, logistics, and law.There was considerable pressure on the King to nationalize Saudi Arabia’s oil assets and Aramco. Mexico had nationalized their subsoil resources in 1917. Iran’s oil industry was nationalized in 1954, and Nasser nationalized the Suez Canal Company in 1956. Iraq, Iran and Libya, had nationalized the foreign oil company assets within their borders. All have fared poorly.But the Royal House of Saud blocked this nationalistic fervour, in favour of engaging their American partners for their business acumen and technical prowess. Eventually Aramco was purchased from the American company - purchased not taken - in what was described as an “amicable deal”, and the company was renamed Saudi Aramco. The board of directors named Ali al-Naimi as the company’s first Saudi CEO.al-Naimi is an example of the Aramco development process. Born into a desert Bedouin family, he benefited from an Aramco-sponsored university education. He returned to the company as an entry-level geologist, learned the oil business and corporate management, and rose to the very top.Managers at Aramco administered the company like an international, not local oil company, with the highest of international standards in every part of the business. This distinction has been the key to Aramco’s success.Aramco has been Saudi Arabia’s greatest source of revenue as well as innovation, and has taken its place among the great multinational energy companies of the world. I normally wouldn’t gravitate towards reading a book with this subject matter but I was intrigued given the recent buzz on the Saudi Aramco IPO. I was very pleasantly surprised to be completely absorbed. Ms. Wald’s history of Saudi Arabia and its energy strategy reads like a novel! You have to admire and root for a country with a long-term strategy for its economic future that is willing to sacrifice short-term profits to become even more prosperous in generations to come.

This was a easy-to-read, pretty good history of Aramco and Saudi and how the two have developed over the decades. There were times when the book was repetitive, there are some editing errors (and entire paragraph reprinted two pages later), and the author, at times, felt a bit of a pollyanna regarding the cutthroat treachery within the house of Al Saud and the country. Overall, it's worth the read.

Ellen has been working on this project for about a decade and it really shows. The book is really well done and comes at the perfect time with the Aramco IPO looming.
