In Breakthrough, Allison Shaw and her team made a breakthrough discovery working with two very lovable dolphins, Sally and Dirk. In Leap, the team is in a new research facility in Puerto Rico. They make such a discovery that is better described as a leap in science and technology. This discovery will have them questioning what it means to be an animal and what it means to be a human. The world will never be the same after they're discovery. However, not everyone will want to see it used for the betterment of mankind. Some will want to use the discovery for their own selfish, tyrannical and evil purposes. A thousand miles away surveillance has identified a mysterious vessel off the coast of Guyana. U.S. Naval investigators John Clay and Steve Caesare are dispatched to uncover it's true intent. They learn that someone has made the discovery of the century that could change life for every person on the planet and there are those prepared to go to war over it. You will see the normal greed aspect that fuels research and discovery. But you will also see, in rather poetic terms, that desperation also fuels research and discovery. Relationships blossom, new friends are made and, as with real life, we must say good bye to others.Leap is an exciting sequel to Michael Grumley's Breakthrough. I was highly anticipating this sequel and was not disappointed. Leap continues the Breakthrough story line but it can easily be read as a stand alone novel. However, Breakthrough will give you some foundation that will deepen your understanding and give you a richer reading experience. I read Leap in one sitting, I could not put it down. This novel is full of leaps. Not small leaps but huge leaps in science and technology. There is great quote in this book that made me think about our society: "'How well do you believe your people would handle a true leap in knowledge, given their current use of fission and fusion devices? How well would they manage frequencies that can heal as well as harm? Mr. Borger, ingenuity is the ultimate gift of humankind. And conquest is the ultimate curse. They cannot be separated. Not yet. Not until you face the gravest threat to your planet's existence. Until you face mortality as a species, not as individuals. Only then can you glimpse true wisdom.'" These leaps are not overly done and are very realistic. We are facing some of these issues today! There is rich character development. He builds upon the relationships in the first novel. There are even leaps in those relationships. You will fall in love with the characters, especially the nonhuman ones. If Sally and Dirk won your heart in Breakthrough, you will totally fall in love with them in Leap! However, save some room in your heart for a couple more very special creatures. No, I am not going to tell you about them, no spoilers here. You must read the book. The book made me want more. The wonderful plot development and very fine tuned ending will make you think there just might be more coming! For me the mark of a great story is that it will stimulate the mind and move the heart! Leap is that kind of story. The story had me thinking about the implication of such discoveries. It made me feel like I personally knew the characters. It elicited many emotions on many different levels.Leap, along with Breakthrough, Amid the Shadows and Evan After, is a good indicator that Michael Grumley is quickly moving to the front of the line of great story tellers. He continues to give us great story lines, lovable characters and believable science. He weaves all this into a story that makes you think about the human condition. Read it, you'll be glad you did.

What a concept. This is a mixture of hard-core science, fantasy, action, espionage and romance all rolled into one. The idea of communicating with dolphins from the first Breakthrough book goes one step farther to communication with a gorilla. We all know about Koko, and she gets a mention, but this gorilla (Dulce) isn't signing, she's "talking:" just like the dolphins, with the help of a super computer. Kicking it up a notch, the gorilla proves she can do a cross-species chat with a capuchin monkey. Interesting concept since they're from different continents.Meanwhile, back in the water, a new vest is created to take the talking-to-dolphins on the road. Or should I say under the ocean? It's a big success. Ali is swarmed by hundreds of excited dolphins glad to chat with her, overwhelming the computer system and causing a failure. Oops! Should have anticipated that, don't you think? If that wasn't enough excitement for one story, it seems the Chinese are doing some mysterious night-time excavations in Guyana and keeping their operations a secret from the whole world. The Russians have "lost" a submarine in the same vicinity as these mysterious Chinese excavations. A Brazilian billionaire is searching for a monkey's birthplace, which ends up being surprisingly close to the Chinese excavations. It all comes to a surprising conclusion. Or does it, really? Another visit from Palin leaves you with some insight to where the story leads. Or maybe not.I'm definitely enjoying the "Breakthrough" series. It's an eclectic mix of genres with strong characters (in totally unrealistic plots!) that I just can't help but love. The good guys are incredibly good and I really enjoyed disliking the bad guys. I'm looking forward to book three and have just discovered there's a book four!

*spoilers*I am about half way through and I’m planning to give up. It’s rare I don’t finish a book, but I can’t bring myself to read any more. Am I the only one puzzled at how a dolphin who carried a nuclear bomb into a spinning ring in the ocean is suddenly alive again? Or how there’s no mention of this at all? The female characters are all pretty stupid for being supposedly smart. Who jumps on a plane with a gorilla in your care after hearing a sketchy story from a man you never met before without doing ANY due diligence?! Oh, because all women are suckers driven by crushes on boys we met years ago.Premise seems good, but the character work is sloppy and there’s not enough logic to support decisions made - including the haphazard “scientific” studies conducted. I couldn’t stomach anymore of this series. A pity because while the first book did have some of these flaws, I expected an improvement in the second - not a deterioration.

I read the first book in the series awhile back and thoroughly enjoyed it! Last week I was browsing my Kindle for a new book and noticed Leap. Started it and blew totally through Books 3 and 4 all in about a week as I couldn't put them down! Love that it is both sci-fi, but also present day and reality. The characters are all intertwined with lots of action and adventure. Definitely recommend and can't wait for the continuation of the series!

Review

The well-established guidebook series has recently changed its format to fit the needs of today's travelers who have less time. Instead of extensive listings mostly for globe-trotting budget travelers, the new Moon Handbooks now provide fewer but more selective listings for a variety of budgets... the books are more easily readable than other guides... making the Moon Handbooks one of the most user-friendly guides in terms of visual appeal and organization... as the quality is uniformly excellent. - Transitions Abroad- Guidebook of the Year, Travel Publishing News Awards, Tahiti-Polynesia Handbook, 1990- Bronze Lowell Thomas Award for Best Guidebook, Moon Belize, 2005- Fore Word Book of the Year Awards, Honorable Mention, Travel Guides (Moon Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos), 2006- Best Travel Series of the Year, Booklist, 2007

From the Author

Salut, Salaam and 'Sup!Thank you for your support, not only for this considering this book, but for supporting travel writing in general. It might sound glamorous or cool (Wow! You get to go on vacation all time time!), but I promise you, most of it is hard work, long nights and lots (and lots, and lots) of walking around and chatting with people. Most days I get back just plain pooped and want nothing more than my bed and a good night of sleep!I've put a lot of work into this and had a TON of support along the way, not the least of which from my wife's extensive family who are scattered around Morocco (though mostly in Tangier) and my own family who put up with me traveling all the time. I hope you find some good recommendations in these pages, some great places to eat, and most importantly, just enough tips to let you have all the adventure you want and feel comfortable knowing that you do have something to fall back on "just in case."Â Feel free to reach out to me before your trip or even when you're in the country and I'll do my best to help out!Happy travels and bon voyage!Lucas

I brought two guide books with me on my trip to Morocco. One was Lonely Planet and the other was Moon Morocco. Being a first time visitor I quickly found myself relying on the Moon guide which provides a perfect mix of insight, culture and fun. I visited Fez, Marrakech, the Atlas Mountains and the Atlantic coast. All those destinations were thoroughly covered and the guide offers reliable tips on what to see, where to eat and how to best experience Morocco. The city and country maps were very useful for getting around and full color photos gave me an idea about what to expect. The Arabic and French glossary was also very useful and helped me communicate with locals who occasionally spoke spotty English. I recommend this guide to anyone looking to discover all of Morocco and get beyond the tourist traps.

My wife and I have been in Morocco now for almost 4 weeks, and have another month to go. I've found this book to be an invaluable guide. When possible, he'll tell you not just the name of a shop in the medina; he'll tell you (as best is possible in the warren of alleys) how to find it. His accommodation suggestions are made from personal experience staying in a place, not just from getting a tour of the rooms. And it's not just the things to do or places to stay, which of course can be found elsewhere; it's his attitude. Where other guides come from the perspective of a tourist, he has the attitude of a westerner who has lived here, married a Moroccan woman, and wants to share with you what he's learned.I have both the Lonely Planet guide and this one, and Lonely Planet has been sitting in the suitcase. This one is worn from use and will be shared with any friend who wants to come to Morocco.

I have to admit that I've had a rather impulsive desire to visit Morocco that is probably a result of being swooned by Kate Hudson's portrayal of the groupie Penny Lane in 'Almost Famous.' I've visited a lot of countries and I know that it's impossible to do everything in a short trip and it's best to just try and keep it simple and see a few memorable places and be able to enjoy them and relax some rather than just being in constant motion. I'm using the new Moon guide to plan a trip that is going to take place in the autumn. Normally I go for the Lonely Planet guidebooks but I had a bad experience with their guide to Singapore and thought it was time to give something else a try. This book is very well-organized, full of all the details that you need to lay out your itinerary, and full of interesting information. Flight leaves on the 30th of October and I already know exactly where I'm heading for dinner when I get to Fez....

I just returned from 10 days in Morocco and am very happy with the info provided in this book. Prices were a bit out of date, but that is to be expected. Cultural and historical info was accurate and helpful. Maps (inasmuch as it is possible to make or provide a map of the tangled streets of Marrakech or Fes) were pretty much on target. Book was well constructed, nicely sized, and held up through our many walks.

My wife and I are planning a three week trip to Morocco this December and have found, as will all the Moon Guides, this volume very helpful. Insights on hotels, restaurants, transportation have been indispensable. As if that weren't high enough praise, the author Lukas Peters is knows the country intimately and has been very helpful on a personal level to share his knowledge and sincere love of this fascinating country. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Great photos and details. I have never used MOON travel books before, and this is a great book. I bought it as I am planning a trip to Morocco, and love learning a lot about its history, people, and sights. The author has lived there for many years and shares great insider tips. Absolutely enjoyed reading this one. I think if I need another travel book for a different trip, I will certainly look at MOON's books first.

We used this on our trip to Morocco and it was very helpful and provided a great history, list of things to do.

This book served as a superb guide for travels in northern Morocco. Peters' knowledge of local highlights is well-researched and conversationally presented. Stunning photos! Do not miss Chefchaouen!
