Great Series! Arrived just fine!

As always, came in exact time looking amazing.With one exception, a small brown smear on page 323. I'm not sure what it is, possibly some run off from the printing press? Does anyone else have this issue?

Ultimately, I think a lot of your enjoyment of this volume of Fruits Basket will come down to one thing:Do you like/believe/agree with/choose-a-verb the fact Yuki sees Tohru as a mother?If you do, then you’ll probably find this volume not half bad, pretty good even. That’s because here’s the entire volume in under 10 words:Yuki.Cinderella.Kyoko and Katsuya.Yuki and Machi.Yuki.Notice anything? Yuki is really the only one who moves forward in this volume. Kyo insists there’s no way Tohru likes him. Tohru… smiles a lot I guess? Shigure smirks, Rin hides, and Hana tries to hit on Kyo’s dad. Somewhere in between we see a strange version of Cinderella and Tohru’s parents’ love story.For those who want to see Yuki get his own happily ever after, you will be happy to see some small developments with Machi, his fellow student council member. As you may have picked up, I have never been a big fan of quick change from “Tohru’s like my mom” to “I found someone who sees the real me”. Not a big fan of that romance? Don’t worry! We have the wonderful tale of a junior high student who marries a student teacher! (That’s sarcasm by the way.) In Katsuya’s defense, he was only in training, but he’s still significantly older than her. For those interested in the main romance (which by now couldn’t be any more obvious), it’s minimal here.Even the major comedy source, the play, goes exactly how you think it would with its cast. It takes a while before they realize they need to rewrite the script (Duh!), but unfortunately we don’t get a lot of extreme reactions from the audience. Come on, neither the prince nor Cinderella like the narration! Send the story into a spiral!It doesn’t help that the art is pretty weak in this volume. Just about everyone has the same face: plain. Yuki in particular looks as if he’s aged several years over the course of the series. (He hardly has any girly-beauty anymore either.) The images in the front cover are nice as usual, but the actual volume really shows how Takaya was struggling with her hand injury. Faces are too similar and the pages are rather empty. I feel bad for her, but there’s no doubt most of the older color images are superior.On the bright side, while I have been torn between the Yen Press’ and TOKYOPOP’s adaptation, this outing’s translation notes provided some additional information. Ayame’s comment at New Year’s, for instance, is almost the same as TOKYOPOP’s translation, but here we get a note explaining Ayame’s pun in Japanese. There was one key line (which will come into play later) that seems much harsher than TOKYOPOP’s version, but I guess you could argue that Yen Press’ is more natural considering who’s saying it. It doesn’t make-or-break the volume, but I’m sure some die-hard Fruits Basket fans will raise their eyebrows.All in all, most Yuki fans will be pleased with all the attention he gets despite his less-than-typical exit from the love triangle. Even then this is a a very slow volume. There’s good-slow and bad-slow, and the latest volume of Fruits Basket falls into the latter category. I was bored, and even as a non-fan, I know the manga can do better.- Krystallina

This was a great read. The stories, practically without exception, were superlative SF: imaginative, clever and very well written. I even feel somewhat ... saddened ... to realize that many of the stories, and one in particular (from the mid-to-late 40's), were much, much better written than a lot of the work available today: I enjoyed everything immensely, but was amazed to discover this writer of nearly 70 years ago seemed to have a much better understanding of (and abilty to utilize) basic grammar, mathematics, and rudimentary scientific principles than do many of the "modern" authors I have read. Indeed, the capacity of readers to understand what many of these wonderful authors from long ago took for granted, could easily be described as "advanced" topics and concepts for many contemporary readers. I highly recommend this to fans of SF short stories. A few of the stories you may already know, but to me, they were even better on re-reading. Altogether, it's a wonderful anthology of many standout works and I am very glad I bought it.

The SF Hall of Fame series was established to recognize quality SF writing before the era of the HUGO and NEBULA awards. What a wonderful gift to the early SF pioneers who were shamefully treated by the mainstream of creative writers. Of course, SF writers themselves changed these negative impressions by the higher literary standards achieved in the 1950s and beyond by such writers as Arthur C. Clarke, Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, Roger Zelazny, Ursala Le Quin, Joanna Russ, Frank Herbert (I'm having fun proving my point with this list, which could go on and on . . . .). This first volume is framed by two stories of a journey to Mars: "A Martian Odyssey" from 1934 (I wanted to make a movie version with Jack Nicholson as the hero) and "A Rose for Ecclesiastes" from 1963 (I wanted to make a movie version with Jack Nicholson as the hero). In those intervening 29 years SF writing matured from Stanley Weinbaum's rather primitive pulp fiction to Roger Zelazny's stunning modernist prose. The first story is just an action fantasy, with little science and the most rudimentary fiction techniques. Still it's a great read! It has action, humor, suspense and one of the great alien characters in the whole genre, the bird-like and noble-hearted Martian, named Tweel. Trust me: once you meet Tweel you will never forget it (?). The later distinction between Hard SF and Soft SF did not yet exist and I doubt it would have mattered to Weinbaum, who was not a professional writer. However, three decades later, we have a very professional, and polished writer in Roger Zelazny, who had internalized the main currents of modern literature as his references to Hart Crane, Rainer Maria Rilke, the Mahabharata, Shakespeare, Rimbaud attest. You get the point. For Zelazny, goddamit, SF is literature and occupies its own niche in world literature. His main character is a poet, an anti-hero with illusions of heroism, a scoundrel and a brilliant, imaginative individual who single-handedly saves a dying civilization from imploding. And what does he get for his efforts. Nothing, no material rewards, no recognition. In this, he resembles the existentialist anti-hero of main stream fiction in the 1960s. And Zelazny's style is breathtaking: metaphorical, lyrical, sarcastic (even sardonic), allusive, persuasive and, beneath Gallinger's tough talk, deeply moving, even empathetic. And Zelazny knew he was writing Soft SF, so he could indulge his imagination in creating his version of a SF Mars and an alien race inhabiting it. The distinction between Hard and Soft forms of SF clarified the intentions of writers so that their readers did not misinterpret the results. This volume is contains a plethora of short masterpieces which together create a vivid primer in the varieties of SF.

This is a collection of very good early science fiction. The selection is varied enough within the genre that you will find something to love here. No complaints about the quality of the writing. The readers all range from good to excellent as well. Where this collection fails is in the packaging and presentation.The disks all come in a thick plastic box that does not stay reliably latched. The disks sit loosely on a spindle inside this case, I guess there's about twenty of them. Nowhere in the package is there a table of contents showing which work is on what disk, and which chapters. They just run, one after another. About half the disks skip badly on the last chapter, they may or may not for you. As this is CD encoding rather than mp3, each story spans two or three disks. You fiddle around, sorting through a stack of loose cds, to swap out and continue the story. This is just not the way to package a collection of this kind.While I love most of these stories, the substandard packing will prevent me from buying the other two volumes.

Dr. Marty is a vet that truly cares about his patients...more than his pocketbook.This book discusses diets and natural health maintenance for our pets. Unfortunately modern "healthcare" and "diets" are litterally killing our beloved pets. In 2017 (almost 20 years after this book was written) the cancer rate among dogs is one out of every 1.61! How depressing is that??!!Through this well-written book one learns about vaccinations, pet foods (both commercial and species-appropriate) and natural supplements.I was fortunate to meet Dr. Marty in person at Smith Ridge Veterinary in South Salem, New York. While my dogs have been on a raw homemade diet for 8.5 years, one of my dogs (a rescue) was having horrible skin issues. Most vets prescribed medications to alleviate SYMPTOMS and suppress my dog's immune system.Dr. Marty, on the other hand, focused on identifying the UNDERLYING CAUSE of my dog's skin condition. After evaluating his bloodwork he prescribed a regimen of natural supplements that support specific organ function. In only three weeks my dog is doing great - his skin has cleared up; he's no longer scratching; eyes are bright and clear; and he's very energetic.Dr. Marty truly loves animals and wants them to live a long, happy healthy life.I encourage anyone who loves their furry family members to read this book and consider implementing Dr. Marty's recommendations. I've bought this book 3 or 4 times now. I keep passing it on. It is full of wisdom and has molded how I take care of my dogs. We all love them, but we think doing what the vets ALL say about shots especially is best. Nope! This book points out that cancer used to be almost non existent. Now, with all the things we do to them it's rampant. This book opened my eyes to being more responsible. I've researched other places because of this book. Now, I would never ever get shots every year. They are most often good with just one set of shots. There is a simple test to see if they are still protected. Then the way that vets give all the shots over and over to little puppies is awful. Never again for me. Even the AKC says we should only give shots once every 3 years! Too many vets care more about money than they do animals.

This book was suggested to me by Sonya Fitzpatrick and she suggested we are over vaccinating our pets. It's great reading. Of course if companies have an animal carcass --beef, chicken, etc.--they will sell the part that is suitable for human consumption to humans because they get much more money. Leftovers go to animal food, including all the dead animals disposed of that are processed in rendering plants. And they don't skin the deceased horses, household pets, zoo animals: hooves, hair, fur, bones --all of it goes into an unhealthy mix. I feel strongly that the book should have a broader audience than pet owners. Much of what Goldstein does in his practice is derived from HUMAN medical research. The chapter on cancer, for example, proves the viability of alternative treatments for cancer, and his method is adopted from a doctor who basically got run out of the United States by the all-powerful Medical Establishment and moved to Jamaica to set up a practice. As long as we have a multibillion-dollar cancer industry in the United States, and as long as industrialists are on the board of every national cancer association and the panels that report to the government on the status of cancer research, what hope can we realistically have of finding a cure in mainstream medicine? If I get cancer, I won't call my doctor; I'll call my travel agent.Cancer is just one example of the work that Goldstein has done that is changing veterinary treatments, and he has taken his fair share of flak for it, which he writes about in this book. Were he practicing on human beings, he'd doubtless be harangued as a "quack" all over the Internet and by the American Medical Association. Would that we had more young doctors who would think outside the box and take the chances Goldstein took.

This hike book is the worst one I have ever encountered – and I have purchased dozens of hike books for many places over the years. I am not a novice hiker. The maps are bad. There are no elevation gradients. . Which is necessary in the up down up of many trails. The directions to the trailheads are pathetic. If you want to find a trailhead, why must you go to three or four other hikes to get there? In addition, the descriptions along the trails may be good for a seasoned Kauai hiker but not for a first time visitor. If you do not know the tree species what good does it do to tell me to “turn left at the Koa tree.”I left my copy there –should have just pitched it in the trash. . A monumental waste of time.

We barely used this one on our trip. It may be good for someone who wants to know specific info on the trails, but we used what we called the blue bible. Ultimate Kauai Guidebook.I think the format was poor and difficult to read while exhausted from our adventures.

A trail guide should do two things:1. Accurately describe, in detail, trails, access, condition, etc.2. Inspire the reader to hike said trailsKauai Trails: Walks, Strolls, and Treks on the Garden Island is mediocre when it comes to the first, and horrible when it comes to the second.The author seems to do her best to convince a hiker planning a trip to Kauai that (s)he should visit California instead. She rails on about garbage, introduced species, erosion, hippies, etc throughout the entire books. Let's keep it to one chapter, Kathy!Worst of all, she bashes the Kalalau Trail, discouraging any Kauai visitor from hiking it. Nevermind that it's ranked one of the best hikes on the planet. Nevermind that on every internet hiking forum, trip reports are invariably glowing. Nevermind that many people who live on Kauai or visit Kauai regularly think it's a DON'T MISS hike. Kathy says, "It's overrated. Don't bother."I'm sad that we don't have a guide to hiking the Garden Isle that's more positive and informative, better organized, with better maps...one that actually makes you think you'll have an enjoyable time hiking in paradise.Purchase this book only because it's the best one there is, not because it's good. I personally recommend The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook. While it doesn't go into as much detail on the trails, it's far more informative, positive, and better updated. Kathy's book lists many trails as CLOSED which aren't closer, or may be damaged but are still hikable.

Book is helpful and nicely laid out. Liked that it contained some walks along with moderate to Strenuous hikes. Some of the cultural comments are inappropriate and need to be excluded. Ordered for my kindle, and received with the wrong cover. Cover reads Long Trails of the Southeast. This book is Kaua'i Trails: Walks Strolls and Treks on the Garden Island.

We just returned from a vacation in Kauai and found this book very helpful. We're not hard core hikers but we like to stroll the beaches and wander down a path or two and this book was very helpful in determining which hikes were "at our level" or not. The author is right on with the assessments of levels of difficulty and time it took on the hikes we took.

A poor choice ;rambling with very confusing maps and directions.We have been to the island several times; the book does not reflect our experience.While we have no doubt the author is quite familiar with the trails, the clarity did not come through in the book.

Great Little book packed with detailed and very useful info. I should never get lost again hiking on Kauai. Mahalo.

This was one of two books we used while hiking Kauai. The description of floral and birds one might see on certain trails was extremely good. Since we are birders this was very beneficial. Excellent text and very detailed.
