Given that the book is a collection of essays, the quality of the content covers a wide spectrum of issues. The overall aim of the book is to give an account of the manner in which postmodernism has hindered social action. Specifically, what is of concern to the philosophers contributing to this work is that the denial of any sort of grand universal meta-narrative by postmodernists denies the ability to form a class of oppressed which can rise up against capitalist oppression. By denyingmeta-history and universals, class struggle, in the eyes of these philosophers becomes impossible. The arguments presented in favor of the particular brand of Marxism held by the contributors, therefore, are of a pragmatic nature and as such do not engage on a theoretical level with the postmodernists. This is one the main problems I have with this book. The contributors only ever look at the practical implication of the postmodern critique without ever engaging the postmodernist on a theoretical level. The postmodern critique of the Marxist meta-narrative is a theoretical one and as such should be argued against not just on a practical level, but also on a theoretical level. A second problem with the book as a whole is that its argument against postmodernism is a straw man. Granted, postmodernism is a philosophical viewpoint that is extremely varied and difficult to define, but the contributors have taken a less developed and easily defeated postmodern perspective as indicative of postmodernism as a whole. What occurs as a result are arguments that do not really engage postmodernism as a whole, but rather engage only a small unsophisticated niche of postmodernism that suits there purposes. It behooves the authors in this book, therefore, to develop a greater understanding of what postmodernism is, and then to develop a critique of it and defense of their own position which does not rest on practicalconcerns alone, but also on the theoretical concerns.

As a collection of essays this book covers a wide range of topics that are important to a quality understanding about the implications of a Marxist and post-modern critique on contemporary western capitalist society. However, as a dialogue on these topics the book is a little one sided and short legged. The Marxist academics that have contributed to these 14 essays i think do a decent job of articulating much of the problem with post-modernism from a non-post-modern-marxist position. Whether such a read of Marx is particularly coherent with what Marx himself wrote is of another matter. The concern over how one can justify a viable resistance to multinational corporate "free" market capitalism is of the uttermost importance for the authors of the text. The post-moderncritique of the Marxist meta-narrative on history (historical materialism) is a kind of line drawn in the sand for most of these academics in that the category of class is justified by such a read of history and class struggle for Marxists is the only coherent and realistic way of engaging in liberatory Praxis given the logic of capitalism. This becomes very important in recent history given the rise of the new social movements (identity politic movements) which have fragmented the oldLeft categories of class and fragmented agency in the face of class war. Some of the authors of these essays do a better job than others when it comes to articulating the post-modern argument, however, some indeed set up post-modern straw men in order to bring the combine. What appears to be the primary problem here in this debate between Marxists such as these and many post-modern theorists is the failure to see the bridge between the two positions by wayof a Coherence epistemological model of justification. As a matter of fact, throughout the entire book words such as knowledge, justification, universal, essential, etc. are all being used seemingly one way by the Marxists and another way by the post-modernist if used at all. The impression one gets from the text on this account is that there are two different language games being played in the debate leading to a whole host of miscommunication. I would recommend this book for reading only if or after one is familiar with the epistemic issues of the debate between post-modernists and Marxists as they rear their heads throughoutthe entire book.For multicultural Solidarity in class war,M.B.R.

I previewed this book to use with my children for high school level sexuality education. I expected to be happy with it. What I hadn't expected was to be so excited about getting it into my 13-year-old daughter's hands! (She's my only one at high school level so far.) I also didn't expect to gain so much from the information presented for myself. Every teen should have this information, and for that matter, every adult. Though he recommends this for the older adolescent, I believe it is necessary at a younger adolescent age. Each parent, of course, will make this decision for their own children. I can't wait to order his accompanying book, "Sexual Wisdom", which goes into more detail of many topics that were only covered in a general manner in this outstanding resource. i'm 46 and this book was my 2nd one for teenagers in my family but i've learned so much!...i found it interesting and thought provoking.

Note: This review contains adult material."Sexual Wisdom for Catholic Adolescents" was written to fill a need in the realm of Catholic Sex Education. It is designed for older adolescents and covers a wide range of topics relating to sexuality. It is intended to be used in the home, either with parent and child together or having the child read it on their own.Dr. Wetzel begins with a good introduction to the biology of human sexuality. He then moves on to discuss sex without love, premarital sex, sexually transmitted diseases, pornography, artificial contraception and sterilization, natural family planning, infertility, and sexual deviations. He handles these topics in a straightforward, pull-no-punches manner. There are many things that adults will learn from reading this book.One particularly insightful chapter is on "Good Sex." In it, Dr. Wetzel divides sexual activity into five levels with Level 1 being "Perfect Sex: God's ideal toward which we strive but can never achieve." Level 7 is "Most severe sexual problems." It is a useful chart because it clearly delineates different sexual behaviors. One can find where one is on the chart and know what he or she needs to work on to move closer to Level 2, the level which is as high level as we can achieve. It was comforting to know that everyone does struggle with sexual sin at some point. No one is perfect in this area.One concern is that this book is recommended for older adolescents. Dr. Wetzel acknowledges that some will want to discuss topics with their children at a younger age. Many of these topics are only appropriate for those approaching adulthood. One would certainly not recommend going into detail with young children about the variety of sexual behavior or sexual codependency. However, children in today's world are exposed to sex and are often offered sex at much younger ages. It is sad but true. Waiting until a child is sixteen to inform them about sex can be much too late. Eleven and twelve year olds are engaging in sexual activity. They need to be informed about the moral issues and physical concerns relating to this and they need to hear it from their parents. While one would not want to allow their eleven year old to read this book, it can offer a good starting point for parents to read and then choose what to discuss.

Primum non nicer is the admonition for all physicians, and the considerable amount of intentional misinformation in this book is proof that this medical doctor has violated his oath. Hence it is really a manifest malpractice, to such a height that this man should likely be disbarred. Apparently he repeats a now hoary piece of pure falsehood about the life span of gay men. Just today I saw on Catholic cable the queen of intentionally false statistics, Pacwa, recommend this book, and especially because it apparently claimed that gay men only live on average into their forties. It was almost heartbreaking that this recommendation came as a response to a phone question to him about a lady whose nephew she thought was "homosexual". Pacwa's morally irresponsible advice was that first this lady should trick her nephew into thinking she could be trusted in her support of him, and THEN she should start quoting (completely false) statistics to set him "straight". (The almost comically tragic irony that this falsehood was discussed LIVE on air on Catholic cable is that one of the most played shows on their network is The Apostle of Commonsense, all about GK Chesterton, and this particular episode on "health" actually defends tobacco smoking as just fine, and impugns the religious philosophy of those that would seek to warn against smoking!!! How is that for lunacy?! Take note this is the cable network that is recommending books like this, and shows you what kind of phystician is being recommended too!!! After many years of cruising and snorkeling at some of the best islands in the Western and Southern Caribbean, I was on the quest to find a good reef fish identification book. Hubby and I used a few fish ID cards, you know the plastic ones that you can carry around with you and at times squint really hard to see if there's any resemblance to the fish we had seen underwater.This book was a wonderful find and has a wealth of information. The book is divided into twelve (12) identification groups (e.g. disc/ovals, silvery, sloping bodies/tapered heads, small ovals, heavy bodies/large lips, odd shaped swimmers, etc). There are many pictures provided and I enjoy seeing the differences between the juveniles or initial stage and the adult or terminal phase. Some of the plain looking juveniles turn into beautiful and colorful adults such as the Parrotfish.The book also points out distinctive markings on the fish (line drawings) along with color pictures. Within each identification group, there are explanations along with descriptions of distinctive features, habitat and behavior, and reactions to divers. Again, a lot of information in this book and well worth the price.The book is quite heavy to carry around, but I can see taking this with us and leaving it in our cabin/room and use as a reference at the end of our daily snorkel adventures. There is a lighter version of this book that I also purchased called the Snorkeling Guide to Marine Life (red cover) and about 80 pages in length. This one covers many of the common underwater marine life we've seen while snorkeling. I can see carrying this lighter version in my snorkel bag.I highly recommend this Reef Fish book with over 500+ pages of beautiful pictures and surprisingly enought detail information to help identify the many underwater marine life. Enjoy!

This is the best Caribbean fish identification book I’ve found. The pictures are great and it includes pictures of juvenile fish too if they look different than the adult version. I also like that it tells you the likelihood of seeing the fish in different areas of the Caribbean (i.e common in Bahamas, rare in Puerto Rico). We live on St John, USVI and I use this book a lot. When someone describes a fish they saw I will find it in the book and show it to to them to confirm.

With the multitude of species that inhabit the carribean reefs, most divers can pick out triggerfish, cowfish, blennies, parrotfish, puffers, etc, but even fewer can really pinpoint the specific species. I, for one, am at a loss for any large silvery fish, which I tend to assume is "a type of jack". This book is extremely helpful for fish ID in that regard, grouping fishes by their body shape and position in the water. My only gripe is that I wish it was spiral bound so that the pages could be laid flat. This book is way too thick and the binding looks too fragile to smash down the pages flatly.

As a diver and underwater photographer, I encounter many different fish. This is a great addition to my other id books. Paul Humann takes wonderful pictures that help make identification easy! I was able to look up a different fish I saw in Grand Turk, it was an Indigo Hamlet! The book is arranged so you can find what your looking for without a lot of flipping around

I'm a beginner - novice scuba diver and enjoy underwater photography. I really wanted something that wasn't overly complicated to help me identify various creatures when scuba diving in Jamaica. I bought the series of 3 (Reef Creatures, Coral and Fish) and these were precisely what I wanted. The first few pages have some drawn illustrations to guide you to which class you are looking for and go to that section where there are excellent color photos to help identify the species. Every species listed also has a short blurb to tell you specific identifying features (which can be helpful if the specimen you're identifying was a little varied from the photo), the prevalence in the area, normal dwelling areas (like in coral, near sponges, etc) to be even more specific to help you identify. I've already used this to help me id species from past photographs. They are very comprehensive and easy to use.My only minor problem and is probably more my fault for not looking at the shipping weights, is that they are a tad heavier than expected. I'm going on another dive trip soon and plan on taking them with me and perusing them between dives and they will definitely require that I lighten my luggage. Together all 3 books (spiral bound with plastic cover) weigh about 5-6 lbs. Comparatively considering prices for other guides which usually had complaints of not being easy to use, no color photos, not enough info., I'm still very happy I bought these. I think the value for the money (purchased used - good to very good condition via Amazon), was more than excellent. Even knowing the weight, I would definitely buy again.

Saw this book in my local dive shop conference room. Was very impressed with the ease of use, yet very comprehensive in the content. My daughter and I use it when we dive in Florida to keep track of what we see. Keeps the dive alive long after we are on shore. I would buy again and recommend this item to friends and family.
