About the Author
Anna Sewell was born on March 30, 1820, in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England. After a childhood injury, she was confined to her house as an invalid and got around largely by carriage horse. Sewell spent her last years writing the children's classic Black Beauty (1877), a fictional autobiography of a gentle, high-bred horse. She died of hepatitis in 1878, just five months after her book was published.LEONARD BRANDT COLE had worked as art director for a lithography outfit, before entering the comic book field during the Golden Age in the early 1940's. He was mainly a cover illustrator for titles like Suspense Comics and Contact Comics. In his early work, he always used basic, flat colors and produced what he called "poster color covers". Illustrating over 1500 covers, Cole drew everything from funny animals to superheroes to jungle girls and sci-fi. A science fiction fan, Cole would often slip rocket ships and ray guns onto books such as 'Captain Flight' and 'Contact Comics' which were supposed to be devoted to contemporary aviation. As for interior artwork, Cole did pencils and/or inks on several features for Holyoke Publications, Gilberton and Farrell. Cole also published comic books through Star Publications, producing various crime, terror, jungle and romance titles in the late 1940s and 1950s. He was art director and editor at Dell Publishing in the early 1960s. He has mainly done commercial art and design from the mid 1960s onwards, working among others on audio-visuals for University Films.Cartoonist STEPHEN L. ADDEO was one of the countless contributors to one of the world's most popular series releases ever, "Classics Illusrrated". Not much is known about the artist as a person - but he was behind the cartoons in a number of popular titles, just as he designed a number of covers. "Classics Illustrated" consisted of cartoon versions of famous literary classics. The Russian-born Albert Lewis Kanter (1897-1973) started releases in 1941 for Elliot Publishing - first as "Classic Comics". The first sheet contained a series version of Alexandre Dumas' "The Three Musketeers", followed by "Ivanhoe" and "The Count of Monte Cristo". The series number four, "The Last of the Mohicans" was launched on a new publisher - Gilberton Publications. And here came Stephen L. Addeo into the picture.NORMAN NODEL (Nochem Yeshaya) was a noted artist and illustrator of children's books and magazines. Nodel began his illustrious career as a field artist in the army, drawing military maps during World War II. After the war, he pursued a successful career as an artist in a variety of styles, notably illustrating a great many issues in the famous 'Classics Illustrated' series in the 1950s. In the 1940s, he had previously been an assistant to George Marcoux, and he has done comic book art for True Comics and Sun Publications. His contributions to 'Classics Illustrated' varied from 'Ivanhoe' to 'Faust' and 'The Invisible Man'. He was also a regular on Charlton's teen, horror and romance titles of the 1960s and 1970s. In the 1960s he contributed to the Warren magazines Eerie and Creepy, using the pen name Donald Norman. During the last twelve years of his life, Mr. Norman Nodel devoted a major amount of his time and energy to illustrating books and magazines specifically for Jewish children, which gave him great pleasure and satisfaction. Norman Nodel worked to the last day of his life. He died on the 25th of February, 2000.

The book is fine but it is the abridged version.
I loved this book as a child so I bought it for my horse-loving granddaughter. But I failed to notice the size of this particular version - it's not a regular book shape, it's more like a magazine, big and flat. Which is weird - why did they print it this way?
I got this book because i was forced to read it in school and didn't really remember it. I thought I would read a page and probably be done with it. But to my great surprise, I found it an amazing story from the horse's mouth. (Joke) Anyway it you've never read it or even read a long time ago, it is well worth the read or re-read!
What is left to be said about a book that has sold over 50 million copies and did for the humane treatment of animals what Uncle Tom's Cabin did to help abolish slavery? Anna Sewell was a hundred years or more ahead of her time. She tried to see the world from the perspective of the horse, which is exactly what the modern concept of "Natural Horsemanship" attempts to do. The book is a collection of tales about the humans which come and go from the life of the horse named Black Beauty. Some are cruel and heartless, others are gentle and considerate. Some are hard-working and honest, others are selfish and vain. To the author, the horse is trusting, empathetic, and uncomplaining, in spite of the wrongs that he is subjected to. Anna Sewell sees in the horse qualities that she would like to see in people. And through her eyes we understand that a truly compassionate person has room in their heart for the considerate treatment of animals.
I love how it talks about how horses suffer for the sake of human vanity. This book very much shaped the way I look at and communicate with my animals from a very young age - particularly my horses. Many bits of this story play in my mind when I buy, sell and trail horses to this day.

Anna Sewell (English Quaker 1820-1878) was one of the first equine advocates, if not the first to write a children's novel about a wonderful horse and the cruelty of man. Black Beauty is the autobiography of a horse.Told from the horse's point-of-view, Black Beauty describes his birth, early training and his fondness for his first master, Squire Gordon, stablemates Ginger and Merrylegs and grooms John and James.For fashion's sake, some owners insisted the grooms harness the carriage horses with their head's held high with the check rein. This made it difficult for the team to pull as well as caused other long term problems. Squire Gordon was against such devices.When James plans on moving on, little Joe Green is trained for his position. The young boy makes a grave error in Beauty's care after the horse is ridden hard to fetch the doctor for the mistress, and the doc rides him hard back. Beauty survives the incident, but when the mistress needs to move due to her illness, all the horses must be sold.After that, Beauty describes his life with various owners. Some are ignorant, some cruel but a handful give him the best care they can including a cab driver. Life is hard, and the author gives details of the cruelty of some grooms, drivers and owners.At least Sewell gives the story a happy ending.I first read this as a teen, before I took riding lessons. Looking back, I think Sewell's insight helped me decide my path on my journey to becoming a professional horsewoman.I would recommend this book for all horse lovers except the very young.
I first read this story was probably over 20 years ago and I really didn't remember it. The first half of the book had me thinking that each chapter was written as a treatise on some particular horse abuse or pet peeve of the author. However, the book gets past this stage and not only becomes believable but very enduring. The main character is a well-born, noble fellow, which is fitting since he's a horse. His patience and acceptance of his fate makes him an easy character to feel empathy for. The tale makes perfect sense in the time period in which it was written as England at the time had been called the heaven of women and the hell of horses. I'd recommend this book for children and animal lovers of all ages.
